It _is_ streaming, you just aren't accessing it right.
You can't just point your browser to a stream. The browser will always
download the content, and then pass it off to the helper application.

they are the same for practical purposes, but I believe i started
pushing m3u because it was better supported, or less application fought
over it, or something. it's probably different today, but i still use
m3u.
M3U is simpler than pls. just a file/url per line, that's it.
for a sstream a pls file would look like:
http://your.server.com:8000/mymount
and that's it.

Hi:
IIRC, the oddcast DSP plugin (http://www.oddsock.org) will allow
mountpoints (or at least oddsock said it would soon). Samcast apparently
already does, but I forget the URL for this (it's in the list archive
somewhere). These are winamp DSP plugins.

I tried a pls file and it appears to work. What's the difference (in
practical terms) and where do I find the documentation on M3U files?
Thanks

If you use Nullsoft's tools, you cannot specify mount points. That's
because the Nullsoft team

A mountpiont is a fragment of a URL (often referred to as a URI) like
'/stream1' or '/my_cool_stuff/stream.ogg'
You tell shout, ices, or whatever what mountpoint to use.

Why doesn't yp.icecast.org show my stream?
Once again, I'm clueless as to what is going on because I don't have
the source or logs to yp.icecast.org. I am touching yp.icecast.org fine:
[14/Feb/2002:01:39:22] directory_touch_xa([yp.icecast.org:80])
completed...server id = 69
but my radio station isn't shown. More details on my setup:
xmms -> darkice 0.7 -> relay icecast server -> main icecast server

Getting the Stream to "Just Start Playing" on the client
Hmmm... Maybe I wasn't clear.
This is a public Web site. Some people are using Netscape, most using IE...
All different kinds of media players, mostly WinAmp, Real, WMP, and iTunes.
What I'm looking for is a way for the media player to be launched
automatically.
If I choose "Open from this location" from the link, WinAmp DOES open. .pls
files *are* mapped to WinAmp, I'd

Getting the Stream to "Just Start Playing" on the client
I'm curious what method y'all are using for getting your streams going on
the client.
We've been using a hyperlink to the stream like this:
http://www.fatfreeradio.net:8000/playlist.pls?mount=/hifi&file=dummy.pls
It works okay but people get prompted to save or open the file. It would be
better if it just opened their streaming player each time, without the
dialog.
Anyone know

A but streamlink to server B insteat of an m3u file as stated in the docs.
Kind regards,

install instructions for iceS on i.cantcode.com
hello,
liveice just won't work for me anymore, it crashes and thus I won't waste my
time on it anymore.
thus, what's the url with the install instructions for iceS. If I'm not
mistaken, it was somewhere hidden on i.cantcode.com?
thanks,
t.

Stream File Type?
I'm a newbie.
I've just installed Icecast2 and am streaming to it successfully via Nicecast (great app BTW).
My problem is that the stream from Icecast2 comes through as an .m3u which does not correctly open on any of the Mac or Windows machines that I've tried. When broadcasting directly from Nicecast the file type is a .pls which both iTunes and WMP seem to deal with just fine
