icecast 1.3.9
: A piece of new code which should only get included on older systems was : getting compiled in anyway. That's been fixed. new tarballs and rpms : are on the site (same version number, but the rpms have -2 now). That seems to have done the trick. Thanks. BTW, is CVS the only way to get libshout? I didn't see a link for it at http://www.icecast.org/download.html. --

directory servers and stuttering
I'm running Icecast v1.3.7 and I've recently noticed there's a direct correlation between a stream "stuttering" and the icecast process having difficulty contacting one or more directory servers. In short, if icecast can't connect to a directory server, then it tends to affect the playback on the stream, such that clients will typically get dropped with message such as

directory servers and stuttering
: : Try 1.3.8 as well, maybe the updated connect code didn't go in until : : then. : Will do. I'll report back after I've had a chance to compile and set : that version up. Initial tests with v1.3.8beta2 seem to solve the problem. To test, I've added two bogus directory servers to the configuration which it cannot possibly connect to and when it goes to touch, there doesn't

A few Newbie Questions
You're going to need root access. Presumably you have it if you have control over icecast. You could do a simple adduser. Then use your favorite editor and open up the /etc/passwd file (again as root). You'll need to read up on what each of the fields are, but in short you'll want to * the password field for that new user. You'll also want to change the shell to /bin/false.

icecast 1.3.9
This took longer than it should have. Icecast 1.3.9 fixes all the known security problems, and also adresses many that weren't reported, thanks to a code audit by John Viega. If you for some reason have problems with 1.3.9 that prevent you from using it, please, please, please make sure you don't run icecast as root, or make sure you have patched the problem areas yourself. Logging problem
Hello, I've got installed icecast 1.3.10 and it worked great since the release of it. But today I noticed that it stopped logging. I can see that it is touching the logfiles (accesstime is changing, lsof shows it) but nothing is appended to them. Also a restart dosn't help. Traffic accounting patch
Hello, I like to force openssh (latest version) to log traffic accounting information via syslog. I managed to path openssh with a ported version of the traffic accounting patch for 2.5.1 The ported patch however is not by me. The problem is that I noticed that sftp subsystem usage is not logged when clients (the offical ssh client seems to do it) do not log off but simply disconnect somehow. I

.First() in R 1.9.0
Dear R experts, I just upgraded R from 1.8.1 to 1.9.0 version. My .First() function in ~/.Rprofile contains x11() and par() functions. .First <- function() { x11(display = "", 8.0, 5.0) par(las = 1, ...) ## ... } And, R claims now, on startup: [hello messages skiped ...] Error in .First() : couldn't find function "x11" > I commented

VorbisHi Any help is appreciate. I have two questions. First, I looked into the vorbis-?-specific and was confused by the floor1 algorithm. In other words, the specific use the list of [0,128,64,32,96,16,48,80] , why can not use

Can samba ensure that a user did not enter the previous password when password expired?
Hello, I have working PDC with ldap samba 3.0.21c-1 I try to force users change their password by setting password expiration. It works - the samba asks a user to change his password. But user can set value of the password to the previos one and system accepts it - at the end no change was made :-) Can samba check whether user really changed value of his password?

Labelling contour lines
I am using contour to draw contour lines onto a photo (jpeg) of a leaf on a white background. I have two problems: 1) The contour gets plotted at right angles to the jpeg image. I guess this is a problem of referencing the start and end points of the image matrix but I can't see how to over come this other than loading in a second image that has been rotated 90 degrees and plotting the
