NHW Project - 2017 timetable
Hello all, Just a quick message for those interested in the NHW Project.I realize that I have too little time to spend on the project currently and I feel that this year will be very important after 6-7 years for its success or not.I already had some few replies from some companies (and a major one), and they can not spend some time, spend some engineers on my work because there is no

NHW Codec - some progress
Hello, I have some progress for the NHW codec. I recently talked with a researcher that has some interest in the NHW codec. He has studied several directional wavelet transforms (notably HWD directional transform), and he came to the conclusion that directional transforms will bring marginal improvement, not significant in the case of my compression codec. This also confirms what I have read from

NHW Project - more test with x265 (HEVC) codec
Hello, I don't have worked on the NHW Project this past week (I also have to work on an other project) but I found time today to make an "extensive" testing of x265 (HEVC) and the NHW codec at high compression (-l7 setting). That's right that x265 is a very good codec! Really impressive. The NHW Project is not as good, it can only compete with x265 (HEVC) on quite high quality

NHW Project - Image comparison
Hello, Could some of you take a look at the image comparison between the NHW Project and x265 (HEVC) at high compression, available here: http://nhwcodec.blogspot.com/ . I would be very very interested in your opinion, and it would help me to perfect the NHW Project. For me the NHW Project has more neatness, and x265 has more precision. Else, I was a little lazy these past months, as I

NHW Project - speed measurement 2 - very high compression
Hello, If it could be of interest, here are new speed measurement for -l13 very high compression setting. For x265 (HEVC), I use BPG codec, and this time I use -m 0 setting which uses the fastest encoding setting of x265.I run the .exe 10x times and I pick the best scores. So here are the timings at -l13 very high compression: Encode time: x265 (BPG -m 0): 80ms NHW: 20ms Decode time: x265

NHW Project - good improvement of very high compression (-l8 to -l13 quality settings)
Hello, Just a quick message to let you know that I have really improved very high compression of the NHW Project from -l8 to -l13 quality settings, and we can still save 2.5KB per .nhw compressed file. Actually I am new to very high compression, it is just 3 months that I am working on it (I put on pause the NHW Project from August 2013 to February 2018 )... And I realize that very high

NHW Project - good quality improvement & encoding speed improvement
Hello, Just a quick message to let you know that I have made good quality improvements for very high and extreme compression of the NHW Project (-l8 to -l15 quality settings). The NHW Project starts to be really competitive with x265 (HEVC) at these very high compression ratios.I even find the NHW Project visually better than x265 (HEVC) for mid and high compression! I have also improved encoding

NHW Project - high compression (-l6 setting and below)
Hello, I would like to thank very much the Theora channel community for their support and help!!! And even recently a Theora channel member proposed me to freely host on his server the NHW Project website, to present the codec on the embedded processors, MCU forums that he knows well, another member forked my GitHub repository!!! Really thank you very much!!! It makes me think that maybe the NHW

NHW Project - new -l18 "extreme" compression quality setting
Hello, I have just added a new -l18 "extreme" compression quality setting to the NHW Project.I find this quality setting very good and actually better than x265 (HEVC). First, I wanted to let you know that compression of the wavelet DC image is really not efficient at extreme compression, I have the fast ideas to improve it, and so we can really save 2.5KB per .nhw compressed files in

NHW Project - some results
Hello, Just a quick message to let you know that I get back to NHW Project currently. I downloaded 20 images from the Internet with rather good quality (mainly faces), I compressed them at high compression -l7 setting with the NHW Project, and on 19 images out of 20, I visually prefer the results of NHW compared to x265 (HEVC)!!! -I can make available these 20x3=60 512x512 24bit bitmap images

NHW Project - seeking for new members
Hello, Very sorry I made a mistake, I compared this version with an old one, not with the previous one, and in fact results are the same, there is no improvement actually... Else I would like to have your opinion on how to have more visibility, audience for the NHW Project.I suspect that big companies don't even know that the NHW Project exists or they didn't test it because it seems too

NHW Project - improvement of -l7 quality setting - more neatness
Hello, Just a word to let you know that I have improved -l7 high compression quality setting, thanks to a new processing and I have also corrected an error in the residual coding. Now it has more neatness/definition.Files size is also a little smaller (and please keep in mind that the entropy coding schemes are not optimal for now, so we can save 1.5Ko-2Ko per .nhw file). Actually I find -l7

NHW Project - high compression (-l6 setting and below)
Hello Ken, Many thanks for your reply! Yes, I very need to adapt the NHW codec to any image size. But actually it is the least interesting part, I don't think that it is that difficult (compared to creating high compression settings) but it is very boring, annoying... Really not the part that I prefer... For now, as I am jobless, my aim is to have "pleasure" with the NHW Project and

NHW Project - high compression (-l6 setting and below)
Hello Spork, > If you want though, when I find some time, I can work on supporting a better command line parsing. Yes that would be great as my command line parsing is not good at all. > Does your codec compile under Linux? If not, that's something I can try to work on as well. I never tested my codec under Linux )-:, and so it would be also great to compile it under Linux.I think

NHW Project - speed comparison with x265
Hello, I am very slowly working on the NHW Project.I recently made a speed comparison with x265 and wanted to share it with you. On my processor Intel Core i5-6400, in average the NHW encoder (totally unoptimized) is x10 times faster to encode than x265 (png decoding time removed), in average 30ms vs 300ms for a 512x512 24bit color image, and in average the NHW decoder (totally unoptimized) is

NHW Project - How to find a sponsor?
Hello, I am still working on very high compression for the NHW Project, but I find the current version good, it has a good neatness of image, which I find visually more pleasant than other codecs that are optimizing for PSNR, SSIM,... Furthermore the NHW Project is still very fast and royalty-free. I dedicated this past year to the NHW Project and I could make very good improvements (like

NHW Project - high compression & community
Hello, I've found some time to get back to the NHW Project. In fact a Xiph forum member told me that even if I will start a new job, he hopes that I will still continue to develop a little the NHW Project, on my spare time.I told him that I would furthermore spend my spare time on the NHW Project if a community around the project could emerge... and he told me that certainly the best way for

NHW Project - very high compression settings
Hello, I think I have nearly validated the -l8 "very high compression" setting, I have started to work on -l9 setting, and I have just tested these ones against x265 (HEVC), and on rather good quality images, they are very competitive, that's not a joke!!! I have tested -l8 quality setting on 30 rather good quality images against x265, and on 20-22 images I prefer the results of the

NHW Project - some update & call for members
Hello, These last 2 months I have been in contact with a very impressive and friendly engineer from Intel who has written an article on my codec and the 4-5 new codecs in general that competes with HEVC.He finally answered me that as Intel is a founding member of the Alliance for Open Media and chairs several MPEG WG around HEVC, they won't be able to put extra resources on the NHW Project. So
