RE: Setting up a routed DMZ -CLOSED
My sincere apologies to all on this list. After looking for returning packets with tcpdump and not finding ANY I called our provider to confirm our IP assignment. The IP range that I was given by my boss was incorrect. After adjusting the ip assignments, everything is working perfectly. Thank you all for your time in troubleshooting this, and I hope to be able to return the favor at some

Re: start error]
thanks again for your sharp eye and speedy response. i have corrected the typos in the IP in the masq file. I am sorry to have to ask for more help but my pc''s on the local network can''t reach the dmz webserver using the webserver''s local or Public IP address. I need to be able to do this in order to test the split DNS setup for the network. Using ethereal on the

Proxy Arp
Hopefully this is an easy question.... I''m using a leaf router (bearing) running shorewall. Three interfaces net, loc, and dmz. Only one computer in the dmz and its being proxy arp''d. External and internal (net and loc) can reach the dmz but the dmz cannot reach the isp''s gateway and beyond, but can reach a system adjacent to the firewall.

Bug in Shorewall check?
I made a boo boo in my config and put in this rule #PPTP DNAT net:213.67.241.162/217.209.46.204/32 loc:192.168.221.200 tcp 1723 DNAT net:213.67.241.162/32,217.209.46.204/32 loc:192.168.221.200 47 - And the the following happened.. and I wonder why it didn''t complain? I am sure I am just misunderstanding some doc

Proxy ARP
Hi all! I posted earlier about the proxy arp configuration = http://shorewall.sourceforge.net/shorewall_setup_guide.htm#NonRouted, = and was probably not sufficiently knowledgeable on the subject. I''ve = gone through a bunch of documents on proxy arp, subnetting with proxy = arp and the documentation at shorewall, and have come up with a setup = that would be perfect for the job at hand

Shorewall config format
Hi, I''m a long time shorewall user and I like it very much. There is only one thing were I''m not always happy with: the config files. There has been discussion on the list about the comments in the files. My concern is that I loose overview over my configuration because of the many config files. Of course there are advantages too but I thinking wether another config format would

RE: Proxy ARP working from Internet butnotfromfwand loc
Hi Alex, and thanks for your time. Probably not. The servers are only configured like they where when they where parallel to the fw. Just the default gateway, same as for the external interface on the fw. That''s what the documentation instructed to configure the servers using arp. But is it required with extra configuration on the server connected via proxy arp? Or is it some parameter

Not sure how to configure Shorewall 2.1.3
I have an access-IProm my isp that I configured my eth0 with. And I also have an IP-range assigned from my ISP that will be used on my servers connected to eth1. The IP-range is routed thru the access-IP. This is how my configfiles look like. Internal everything seems to work but not external. /etc/shorewall/proxyarp #ADDRESS INTERFACE EXTERNAL HAVEROUTE

Proxy ARP working from Internet but not from fw and loc
Hello everybody. I could not find an answer to my problem in the archive. (But that may just be me :-) ) I have a problem with proxy arp and connection from loc (localnet) and from the firewall. Works fine from internet to dmz / proxy arp and vise versa. I have a feeling the solution is simple, but I''m no guru in Linux routing etc. The problem seems to be the routing setup. loc -

Some issues with proxy ARP
This is some ramblings on why using proxy ARP (on a host in a DMZ) is a good or bad thing. The good is that a computer X retains a public IP address which makes it easy to connect it directly to the net if the firewall has to be taken down for extended periods. Thus, if computer X is a mail server for example, it can still function in a reduced capacity until the firewall is restored. The bad

How could I open Port 1701 for VPN l2tp/ipsec
Hello Mailinglist, please excuse my bad english - but I am not a native speaker. My Network looks like this: Internet --- dyn. IP --- Firewall (shorewall) --- LAN (192.168.X.X) No I try to connect my iphone (from mobile Internet G3) over VPN (l2tp/ipsec) with the firewall. But I canĀ“t open the necessary Port 1701. /var/log/syslog ... Dec 30 00:24:29 router kernel: [226128.293757]

Proxy ARP - Pros & Cons
In a previous thread, Tom listed advantages (reproduced below) of Proxy ARP over NAT. They are great reasons, but I have one reservation. By using private addresses with NAT for servers in my DMZ, I can granularly allow specific traffic, such as to/from the SMTP gateway/relay in the DMZ, to connect inbound from the DMZ to an internal (LOC) mail server, and know that it comes only from a

clean install with 3 ip addresses
i am doing a clean install on fedora core 2 using the shorewall rpm and the Shorewall Setup Guide for multiple IP''s using a stock configuration except for AllowDNS and AllowWeb on the firewall (so i can post this message). my shorewall status file is attached. my setup 69.17.65.105 = firewall 69.17.65.22 = dmz server 1 69.17.65.161 = dmz server 2 my local network is

Adaptation - Architecture Question
I have been studying Tom''s configuration at: http://www.shorewall.net/myfiles.htm -and- http://www.shorewall.net/NAT.htm I am using SBC as an ISP and also have 5 "real" IP addresses and because of other issues, have to re-do my set-up. If I have a block at .120/29 assigned to me, what SBC does is give you 5 usable addresses, in my case .121 is the SBC modem/router and

DMZ hosts gateway
Hi everyone, I have a question regarding the default gateway for hosts on DMZ zone. I moved servers from parallel to the DMZ (outside the firewall, directly connected to I-net) to inside DMZ. The default gw for these servers was the DSL router(bridge) of my ISP. What should be the default gw (for the hosts inside the DMZ), when hosts are inside the DMZ now - still the DSL router (external

Using private & public addresses together i n the Shorewall''s DMZ zone
To rephrase the question, "Can I use masquerading and proxy ARP in the same zone simultaneously?" It''s not a stupid question--I couldn''t see any reason why it wouldn''t work, but I had actually try it out to convince myself that it did (which isn''t a bad thing to do before posting the question to the list, by the way). In any case, the answer is

VPN hardware?
I have a NetGear FV318 living in my DMZ, with one of its LAN-ports living in my LOC zone. What rules are needed in shorewall to allow a certain subnet to make connections to this device from the net zone? Do I define it as a tunnel in shorewall/tunnels, or do I just allow some selected traffic to the DMZ IP? I am not sure which of the docs are right for me in this case?

Bridge Interface without an IP Address?
We are using Shorewall 2.0.8 with SuSE 9.1 and have built a bridging firewall primarily to defend against syn flood and smurf DoS attacks. We are a small ISP using Cisco routers for a total of 5-6 subnets. Since bridges are based on use of MAC addresses, if we could use one bridging firewall system instead of 5-6 ... is this possible? practical? (Other than introducing a single point of failure
