Making an official MIME type for FLAC?
Hi all, I'm new to FLAC, and even newer to this list. I'm pretty excited about the format, though. I was wondering if there was any work being done, or any interest at all, in officially registering a MIME type for FLAC with the IETF. (The details on the registration process can be found at ftp://ftp.isi.edu/in-notes/rfc2048.txt) Obviously something like "audio/flac" would

Bad mime type reported for flac file
Hi all, It has recently come to my attention that the linux "file" utility reports some (but not all) of my flac files as having a mime type of "audio/mpeg". Obviously this is incorrect, but why is it reported as such? I've cut and paste a few commands below from my shell to illustrate what I'm seeing: black:/media/mildred/music/Tool/10,000 Days$ file -i *

FLAC mime type
Late last year FLAC was added to the gnome-vfs mime-types database. The only problem is that it was added as application/x-flac, while it seems more logical for it to be audio/x-flac. Do you have an opinion on this? For comparison, mp3 is audio/x-mp3 but ogg is application/x-ogg (presumably since it could have any kind of binary data inside). I was going to ask Thomas Vander Stichele, the

Question about MIME tag for FLAC
(1) What is the "standard" MIME tag for FLAC files? I found "audio/flac" and "application/flac" in various postings in the newsgroups. (2) What MIME tag (if any) does the Winamp plugin support when dropping URL's? I'm trying to serve up a link to a FLAC file and drop the link on the Winamp playlist. This works fine for MP3 files but I can't seem to get

Bad mime type reported for flac file
Eric, I believe that ID3 tags are not legal for FLAC, but they are accommodated. ID3 tags are supposed to be for MP3 only. The Linux "file" utility is probably finding ID3 tags and making a reasonable assumption that this is an MP3. I don't tag my FLAC files, so I do not know what to suggest. Perhaps there are some clues in the FLAC documentation on what are proper tag

attachment_fu and mime type issues
Hi All, I am having a problem with the attachment_fu plugin and flac audio files. In the dev environment, using mongrel, the form upload object does not seem to have any associated content_type. I get the following attachment_fu validation error: "Content type can''t be blank". I don''t understand why the file_data would not have any content_type. Doesn''t rails

Standardization FLAC through IETF
Dear members of the flac-dev list, I'm writing to ask for feedback from the FLAC community regarding the possibility of standardizing the FLAC specification through the Internet Engineering Task Force. I'm working with MediaArea on the PREFORMA project which focuses on building conformance checkers for Matroska and FFV1. Since Matroska and FFV1 are not yet formally standardized, this

Now that I can build FLAC again with Janne's patch I would like to report about the warnings I get when building for Android: android-make | grep warn md5.c: In function 'format_input_': md5.c:282:25: warning: cast increases required alignment of target type [-Wcast-align] md5.c:288:24: warning: cast increases required alignment of target type [-Wcast-align] decode.c: In function

[Flac-users] FLAC 1.0.4 build issue
Hi, I gave up on 1.0.4 on my osx machine for the time being, but needed it on a linux machine this morning. Grabbed 1.0.4 and it seemed to build ok, but doesn't pass make check. Sorry if this is redudant information. I've seen a few posts recently and can't tell if it is or not. flac-1.0.3 on the same machine builds, checks and runs fine. thanks, mike ERROR: iterator claims

[Flac-users] FLAC in the news
FYI, Unless you've been checking the FLAC site you might have missed some encouraging things that have happened in the last few months. I haven't really been announcing things in the lists along the way, but to summarize: - Primus and Phish have been selling soundboard recordings of shows in FLAC - Magnatune (an indie label) offers their whole catalog in FLAC and Vorbis now - More

[Flac-users] Re: my flac -t issue: next approach
Kerry's post looks very promising: | It can but is probably not as nice as you would like. It's a huge improvement over what I can do now. Thank you! | flac -t *.flac Now, that doesn't work for me. I know that command.com doesn't glob wildcards but rather expects the application to do it, and apparently flac.exe doesn't. Under a real shell that wouldn't be a problem,

Detecting FLAC file type
Hello, I have a program that is given a random file and needs to determine whether it is Vorbis or FLAC. For Vorbis, there are various places where I can infer that I have a bad stream. But for FLAC, when I call either FLAC__stream_decoder_process_until_end_of_metadata or FLAC__stream_decoder_process_single, it searches the entire file before giving up. I'd like it to stop searching as soon

[Flac-users] flac -t script / test vs. verify
First, many thanks to Kerry Hoath (and some to a friend who is not on this list, but mostly to Kerry) for help with my batch file question. It's working, pretty much, but I'm still tweaking it, and I'll share the results when it's polished to my satisfaction. Related question: according to the longer help file, if you use the "verify" option during encoding, flac checks

[Flac-users] MD5 digest doesn't match
I can't figure out how to verify flac md5 signatures. The docs say flac does an md5 over the unencoded audio data, but I can't reproduce it. I'm using flac 1.0.2 and Ron Rivest's reference md5 implementation. $ md5 temp.wav MD5 (temp.wav) = a7c92c4a656b2be2582f77c51b68a623 $ flac temp.wav $ metaflac temp.flac file: temp.flac METADATA block #0 ... [Flac-users] FLAC 1.0.4 problems
I'm having a number of problems related to building the latest FLAC release. My build environment: Linux, PPC, gcc 2.95.3 The first has to do with with builing FLAC itself... specifically I can't get id3lib support to build. Whether or not I specify the location of the headers and libraries, the config.log turns up this: configure:9361: gcc -o conftest -g -O2 -INONE/include

[Flac-users] viewing the fingerprint?
An enthusiastic FLAC user on another list to which I subscribe said that FLAC has a function to display on screen the stored fingerprint that a FLAC file has of its source WAV. That sounds wonderful, because it allows a user to see whether two differing FLAC files might come from the same WAV but have been compressed with different sets of options, and therefore they would decompress to identical
