Yes, that might be a benefit as well. But an unexpected one: in
well-designed and matched protocol environments, if you expect to see
some array of differing protocols, you will also see an easy way of
discerning those protocols from each

The new WebM codec
Hey everyone.
If you haven't seen this already, last week was Google I/O the third
edition.
The event page is : http://code.google.com/events/io/2010/
The youtube channel with the keynotes is :
http://www.youtube.com/googledevelopers
One of the most interesting things at that conference was the introduction
of the WebM codec, which is a combination of On2's VP8 video codec (which is

If the whole first portion of the file is missing, then regenerating the
header is, in the abstract, a hard problem involving searching a very
large solution space. In practice, many encoders

Flac and lyrics
Both MPEG-4 File Format (mp4) and Matroska (mkv) have an interesting
format for lyrics and subtitles. Since these container formats can
contain multiple contain streams, lyrics or subtitles are just another
"stream" interleaved with the rest of the data. They are synchronized by
having timestamps like any other stream. The payload is just text data.
If you don't care about

[Flac-users] FLAC in the news
FYI,
Unless you've been checking the FLAC site you might have
missed some encouraging things that have happened in the
last few months. I haven't really been announcing things
in the lists along the way, but to summarize:
- Primus and Phish have been selling soundboard recordings
of shows in FLAC
- Magnatune (an indie label) offers their whole catalog in
FLAC and Vorbis now

OGG/OGM media container
Hi all,
Xiph aims at developing open-standards media formats. Though xiph.org
tells about vorbis/theora/flac/speex, nothing is mentioned about container
to use (that is ogg/ogm). I have a few questions
Is there a difference between ogg and ogm? I guess its only the extension
that is different and everything else is same.
Some tools (like ogmtools) are available to create ogm files. What is

Matroska as an alternative to Ogg (container)
http://www.matroska.org/
I just found out about this and I think it looks like a great idea. I figured
some on this list would be interested.
Also, speaking now without having reviewed matroska in detail, nor being
involved in Ogg/Vorbis:
Perhaps it would be a viable alternative for the Ogg format for Theora if
nothing else. I read about the .ogg format a while back, and while I have no

Well the interesting question is: "Is webm streamable?". I don't know much
about it nut webm is wrapped into a matroska-based

Hello all!
(cc-ing the flac-dev list)
I would like to give an update as to the recent CELLAR work on the FLAC
specification.
• Work has been done to make internal and external links more accurate and
reliable.
• 'Rice Coding' has been clarified as 'Exponential Golomb Coding.'
• Clarifications have been made for binary representation.
• Typos and other small changes have been

Then recommend one single format. Nobody *has* to support all of the
features present, yet it makes sense to *allow* common variances. Most
of all, because:
