O_NOATIME ?
Hello, since we are using rsync for backing up millions of files in a virtual environment, and most of the virtual machines run on SSD cached storage, i`d be curious how that negatively impacts lifetime of the SSD`s when we do rsync run every night for backup my question: does rsync normal file comparison run to determine if anything has changed change atime of any files ? for me it seems,

Option to not update Atime on filesystems not mounted noatime
Hi I have a single filesystem i don't mount noatime because mutt would work very good otherwise. Today, in a discussion about mkisofs, i learned that Linux since 2.6.8 supports "O_NOATIME" as an option to open. (see "man 2 open") So how comes that rsync doesn't do that and/or there is no option to switch on that behaviour? Bis denn -- Real Programmers

Guide to building linux-2.6-merge.hg
Hi there, Is there a guide or little howto building (and installing) the linux-2.6-merge.hg repository? I successfully build the vmlinuz image, do I need to build a XenU kernel too? I''m interested in learning about and following the latest developments of Xen. It''s not for production usage. Whether or not things will work isn''t very important. But it would be nice if I

FLAC__metadata_simple_iterator_set_block corrupting Flac (ogg) stream?
Hey! So, I'm clearly doing something wrong, because I've written a program to view and modify the comment tags in a FLAC file, which appears to be embedded an Ogg stream. This particular file also has ID3 headers at the beginning, but I was planning on ignoring those and fixing them up using some ID3 code later on ... Now, to read the comments is quite simple:

Display problems with Freelance Graphics & Notes under Wine
I have been trying to use Freelance Graphics under Wine for a long time (since Oct 2000 :), but I cannot seem to get the display stuff working correctly. I always get text splattered over top of other text when trying to view existing .PRZ files. This happens in both Freelance and in Lotus Notes (when Notes is trying to display a file attachment of the .prz persuasion). A quick Google search

I need a Freelance Coder...
For what's it's worth, I do something similar to this with Andrew Taylor's libshout-java. The Web server manages a playlist, letting users add/remove tracks from the playlist. This playlist is consumed by a "streamer" process that accesses the audio data and pushes it to the Icecast server. [ Java Web Server ] <------> [ Playlist ] |

[fdo] Scheduling subsystems (crontab, at) and the desktop
Hi there fellow hackers, geeks and others who want the UNIX desktop to succeed. I bring forward the question whether or not a (freedesktop.org) specification is necessary for application scheduling software. The current UNIX Desktop user does not have an easy way to configure the tasks which he wants to schedule. Sure we have such a utility. And sure we can shout to our Desktop users

Differences between IDLE when Maildir vs. wel the "mail" folder is used
Are there any differences with how both IDLE and "UID FETCH n:n+x (FLAGS UID...)" are handled when Dovecot is using a "mail" vs. a "Maildir" user? I have recently implemented support for IDLE (Push E-mail) in a client infrastructure that I'm building. I haven't in depth checked out what the problem might be, but when Dovecot was using the "mail" dir

[fdo] Integration of network-softwares like samba, nfs and sftp with the desktop
Hi there, I would like to enable the desktop user to create shared folders, for example using protocols like Samba, nfs and sftp. For the user to make this possible, the user needs (on a Linux machine configured with the defaults of most current Linux distributions) root privileges. However. In a desktop environment, in my humble opinion the possibility for a normal user to configure a simple
