Variable Bit Rate
Is FLAC a variable bit rate format when streamed? If so, how can it be truly lossless? -- Dennis Brunnenmeyer Director of Engineering CEDAR RIDGE SYSTEMS 15019 Rattlesnake Road Grass Valley, CA 95945-8710 Office: 1 (530) 477-9015 Mobile: 1 (530) 320-9025 eMail: dennisb /at/ chronometrics /dot/ com http://www.chronometrics.com/crs/index.html <http://www.chronometrics.com/crs/index.html>

Variable Bit Rate
Brian... You've been both polite and helpful. Thanks. I do understand the dimensional nature of images and sound, though I admittedly glossed over the details while trying to draw attention to time rather than spatial artifacts. What I was looking for was confirmation that a properly designed application would decode FLAC without temporal issues. I believe you've made that perfectly

Variable Bit Rate
I'm well aware how compression works. But images and document files do not depend on the relative timing of the data to reproduce themselves. They are in essence only two-dimensional in space, whereas the data in a sound file is time-dependent. The question really has more to do with the decoded FLAC stream output, which I presume is a linear PCM file, e.g. WAV. If FLAC is lossless and

Variable Bit Rate
FLAC is variable bitrate, but the bitrate is determined by how efficiently the data can be compressed while maintaining 100% data integrity. PDF File in FLAC?
Hi... Is there any possibility of including a PDF file (A complete set of liner notes in a single multi-page document, for example.) in a FLAC file? If so, what needs to be done, if anything, to do so? A proposal to extend (create) a codified set of revisited and additional FLAC tags
Hello... For the last three years, several of us have been developing a FLAC-based digital music library for use at our radio station here in northern California. This was started first as an experimentwith the goal of understanding what it takes to make a useful library on a central network file server. In the process, we developed an improved and far more useful schema for tagging the

Switchtower (0.10.0), ssh and environment confusion
Seems like my day for Rails posts... :) OK. I''ve started using Swtichtower to help with deploying changes to my production rails apps. Unfortunately I''ve come accros an inconsistency that I can''t quite figure out. It''s about the PATH env var under Bash. I''ve created a task that just does a: run "env", to show what I''m seeing:

Why change data type when dropping to one-dimension?
Hello, First, let me say I'm an avid fan of R--it's incredibly powerful and I use it all the time. I appreciate all the hard work that the many developers have undergone. My question is: why does the paradigm of changing the type of a 1D return value to an unlisted array exist? This introduces boundary conditions where none need exist, thus making the coding harder and confusing. For

3.8p1 on Solaris 8
Hello, I am running into some strange (to me) behavior trying to upgrade from 3.6.1p2 to 3.8p1 on Solaris 8. All of my machines are running 3.6.1p2 (Linux boxes have had RH errata applied). When I ssh with my AFS account name from any of them to the Solaris 8 box running 3.6.1p2, it responds with "afsuser at machine's password:". Once the password is given, I am logged in just

S/R/RWeb/ODBC
I'm looking for an optimal approach to access Oracle databases via RWeb applications. I'm new to R but familiar with programming functions and web pages for the S+ Statserver. I'm now going through the motions of migrating S+/Statserver applications to R/RWeb as a feasability exercise. I can access databases using ODBC directly in R or S, and using Statserver, but I have not succeeded

Confidence interval on parameters from optim function

I apply optim() to a given function f > res <- optim(c(0.08,0.04,1.),f,NULL,method="L-BFGS-B",lower=c(0.,0.,0.)) And I would like to get the p-value and confidence intervals associated with > res$par My second question deals with error message. I

maps and lattice
