Variable Bit Rate
I'm well aware how compression works. But images and document files do
not depend on the relative timing of the data to reproduce themselves.
They are in essence only two-dimensional in space, whereas the data in a
sound file is time-dependent.
The question really has more to do with the decoded FLAC stream output,
which I presume is a linear PCM file, e.g. WAV. If FLAC is lossless and

Brian...
You've been both polite and helpful. Thanks.
I do understand the dimensional nature of images and sound, though I
admittedly glossed over the details while trying to draw attention to
time rather than spatial artifacts. What I was looking for was
confirmation that a properly designed application would decode FLAC
without temporal issues. I believe you've made that perfectly

Variable Bit Rate
FLAC is variable bitrate, but the bitrate is determined by how
efficiently the data can be compressed while maintaining 100% data
integrity.

PDF File in FLAC?
Hi...
Is there any possibility of including a PDF file (A complete set of
liner notes in a single multi-page document, for example.) in a FLAC
file? If so, what needs to be done, if anything, to do so?

FYI: Heroku Cedar, pg, openssl, omniauth, troubles and a solution
Hi guys,
I found a really nasty issue that affects people running on Heroku''s cedar
stack. We are using Rails 3.1.rc5, pg 11, omniauth 2.6. Ruby is 1.9.2.180p
Basically there is an incompatibility between the http, pg and OpenSSL
modules which segfaults when making https calls, for example to log in
through twitter. Now pg is a required gem when using Heroku cedar stack so
leaving that

Heroku Slugsize shot up drastically
Hi,
Locally my application is 7MB without tests and logs, etc. The .git
folder is 29 MB. I also have no gems / plugins in vendor folder. 95%
of images sit on S3. However on committing to Heroku it shows ----->
Compiled slug size is 62.7MB
What is wrong? It happened?
To add more context my .gitignore file is .bundle, db/.sqlite3, config/
database.yml, log/.log, tmp/, .idea, .redcar,

Very bad echo (appears that...)
The echo canceller algorithms aren't doing anything. We get extreme
echo during the conversation, it appears even before the call connects,
the echo is there...
This only happens with SIP to/from WCFXO (analog POTS). Looking at the
Zaptel configuration:

Live CD/DVD for encoding?
Hi -
I'm running CentOS, which means many of the support libraries are a bit
on the stale side.
I have occasional need to transcode to theora - but it seems the
transcode program, which I have managed to successfully install, does
not have theora as an output option. It seems I have to use a program
called ffmpeg2theora which I just can not get to build on CentOS - I'm
guessing

Log says yp updated but does not appear at dir.xiph.org
On Windows XP I am running WinAMP to the Shoutcast server and then using
an Icecast 2.2.0 server as a relay. The idea is to have a single source
stream appear on both Shoutcast and Icecast directories.
The log gives the following lines repeatedly but my server does not show
when I search for it at http://dir.xiph.org and does not appear under
the Icecast Stream Directory on WinAmp.

How do you execute "rails runner" in Heroku?
I''m going through the 4th edition of the book _Agile Web Development
in Rails_.
One of the exercises involves automatically creating 100 orders. The
command to run locally is "rails runner script/load_orders.rb". I
have no problems here - it works.
What''s the command for running this in the deployed Heroku application?

A proposal to extend (create) a codified set of revisited and additional FLAC tags
Hello...
For the last three years, several of us have been developing a
FLAC-based digital music library for use at our radio station here in
northern California. This was started first as an experimentwith the
goal of understanding what it takes to make a useful library on a
central network file server. In the process, we developed an improved
and far more useful schema for tagging the
