Variable Bit Rate
Is FLAC a variable bit rate format when streamed? If so, how can it be truly lossless? -- Dennis Brunnenmeyer Director of Engineering CEDAR RIDGE SYSTEMS 15019 Rattlesnake Road Grass Valley, CA 95945-8710 Office: 1 (530) 477-9015 Mobile: 1 (530) 320-9025 eMail: dennisb /at/ chronometrics /dot/ com http://www.chronometrics.com/crs/index.html <http://www.chronometrics.com/crs/index.html>

Variable Bit Rate
FLAC is variable bitrate, but the bitrate is determined by how efficiently the data can be compressed while maintaining 100% data integrity. Brian... You've been both polite and helpful. Thanks. I do understand the dimensional nature of images and sound, though I admittedly glossed over the details while trying to draw attention to time rather than spatial artifacts. What I was looking for was confirmation that a properly designed application would decode FLAC without temporal issues. I believe you've made that perfectly

I'm well aware how compression works. But images and document files do not depend on the relative timing of the data to reproduce themselves. They are in essence only two-dimensional in space, whereas the data in a sound file is time-dependent. The question really has more to do with the decoded FLAC stream output, which I presume is a linear PCM file, e.g. WAV. If FLAC is lossless and

A proposal to extend (create) a codified set of revisited and additional FLAC tags
Hello... For the last three years, several of us have been developing a FLAC-based digital music library for use at our radio station here in northern California. This was started first as an experimentwith the goal of understanding what it takes to make a useful library on a central network file server. In the process, we developed an improved and far more useful schema for tagging the

Live CD/DVD for encoding?
Hi - I'm running CentOS, which means many of the support libraries are a bit on the stale side. I have occasional need to transcode to theora - but it seems the transcode program, which I have managed to successfully install, does not have theora as an output option. It seems I have to use a program called ffmpeg2theora which I just can not get to build on CentOS - I'm guessing

Samba 3.0.25b on centos 5.1 a lot of signal 11 very unstable!!!
Hi. We add a new virtual machine with vmware server 1.0.4, centos 5.x client, we update the server with yum and receive samba 3.0.25b-1.el5_1.4, we have a PDC running Gentoo with Samba 3.0.24+ldap, all the windows clients and other Linux boxes(.3.0.10 + 3.0.23 + 3.0.24) are working very good and stable. The only problem is this new server, i read about some changes with samba 3.0.25b and

SAMBA hosts vanishing from WINS server running on NT4
We have a WAN with subnets and our remote SAMBA Hosts vanish after about a month from the WINS server. We have mixed SAMBA versions from 2.0.7 to 2.2.1a. NT (wins) 10.1.1.1 SAMBA 1 10.1.1.2 | | | SAMBA 2 10.2.2.2 All SAMBA hosts are set up to use the NT WINS server and after a SAMBA start they are there. But they 'fade away' in time. Is there a setting I am missing? Or do I

Hi, I've followed the instructions in the chapter 8 of the documentation to connect my AIX 4.3.3 machine with Samba 2.2.8.1 (taken from bull as binary for AIX). The server is in the domain now, but the domain users can't log on to the samba server. The first problem in the log file is: [2003/07/08 18:00:46, 0] smbd/password.c:domain_client_validate(1558) domain_client_validate: could

Help with: "Cannot copy Filename: The specified network name is no longer available" error
I am not sure if this is a windows problem or a Samba problem. We have a network consisting of a mixture of Samba and windows servers running under a windows PDC. The network is a WAN with radio (802.11B) point-to-point links between buildings within the campus, and frame relay and ADSL links to interstate offices. The interstate offices have windows BDC's. Most of the desktops are win2k
