RE: [Shorewall-users] SMTP outbound problem (fwd)
I think we should add an FAQ entry for tcp_ecn. I remember Tom giving a good description in one of his many responses and there is mention of it in the pptp page, but I could not find the response from Tom about different tcp stacks. New in CVS
I''ve decided to make a late addition to 1.4.0. A number of you have encountered a problem whereby TCP connections could not be established to certain sites. The solution was to turn of Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN -- RFC 3168). I have added a facility whereby ECN may be turned off on a host or network basis. A new /etc/shorewall/ecn file (format is the same as

http and smtp connections time out
I am running red hat 9 with shorewall 1.4.6b-1, Have noticed http and smtp connections time out to some hosts I have tried to change tcp_ecn value but without results - the problem persist. I am now forced to use ISP smtp server, and ISP http proxy server to reach some sites. The problem does not exist when I was running win200k with winroute. Thanks to Help L.Djebran

Shorewall suggestions
Just a note to mention that I have been using the RC1 release at work for a simple one interface firewall. No problems that I have seen. We use Solaris, AIX, Tru64, and Linux in my group at the U of W. I know some IP filter package is available on Solaris and Tru64. On the Tru64 system you can configure an interface with a list of cidr notation subnets to accept or deny access. I reformatted

RED to use ECN (or work at all?)
Dear Community, sorry for the somewhat dumb question. Maybe someone has any pointer to how to setup the RED queue to mark pakets with ECN. In particular what are appropriate parameter settings for limit, min, max, etc. All my trials end up with either "RTNETLINK answers: Invalid argument", although the command line (at least for me) looks fine in regard to what is said on the

Routing of outgoing packets
Hi! I am trying to use hping to chek the latency of our network. Somehow things are not going to plan and I thought someone might be able to shed some light on the subject. Here is the setup: (the IP addresses gvien here are fake, but they do represent the correct state of the networking setup) vlan interface IP mask V2 eth0 192.168.20.20 32

Thanks Tom. Development doldrums in another open source project
I, too, want to thank Tom for such a great software package and all the support he has always given. I was just reading a Slashdot interview with the Nagios/NetSaint author Ethan Galstad. The whole article is interesting and I bet the questions and answers would be similar for Shorewall: http://interviews.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/01/09/1216259&mode=thread&tid=156 Question 19

ACK's overhead
Good day time! We've noticed the following issue with Samba 3.0.1 on Linux. When SMB client asks for the first time on FID for a locking or read request on an opened file, it causes an ACK to be sent from client side. Windows server also requests ACK BUT much more rarely. Sending ACK causes additional overhead when working in heavy locking and unlocking environment. Windows server
