Hello I'm working about audio and video codecs. I'm making a research about the state-of-the-art in coding technologies.
My question is about the speex codec 1.0. I would like to know the name of the algorithms that it uses.(LPC,CELP..). It uses more or less the same algorithm for narrowband and wideband?
Finally i would like to ask about future codec developement projects.
Thanks

draft-ietf-avt-rtp-speex-01.txt
Hi all
We are about to send an updated version of the internet draft
"RTP Payload Format for the Speex Codec" to the IETF AVT working group.
Before submitting we would like your input, if you have any comments
or input please send them to the mailing list.
If we don't get any comments in 1 week (by 22. May 2007) we will go ahead
and submit it to the IETF. Of course you can comment

maximum frame-length for narrow, wide and ultrawide encoding
> What is the maximum frame-length that libspeex will produce for narrow,
> wide and ultrawide encoding?
In normal operation (no in-band side information, like requests, ack,
stereo, ...), the max size for a frame is 62 bytes in narrowband, 106
bytes for wideband and 110 bytes for ultra-wideband.

Speex 1.1.2 - Try it on ARM
Hi,
I just released unstable version 1.1.2 that contains more fixed-point
work. Though it's still not 100% complete, enough have been done to make
it run in real-time on ARM. In order to do that, compile with
--enable-fixed-point --enable-arm-asm. All narrowband modes work in
real-time with complexity 1 (some work with higher complexity) and some
wideband modes also work (up to ~20 kbps) at

cosmetic problems with speex encoder in rc3
Take a look at this:
peexenc --vbr -V --quality 4 audiodump.wav a.spx
Encoding 32000 Hz audio using ultra-wideband (sub-band CELP) mode (stereo)
Bitrate is use: 22400 bps (average -1268444817 bps)
I'll take a look at what the problem is later today or tomorrow, but
if anyone beats me to the bug, let me know before I spend too much
cscope time playing with it.
Regards,
Matthias

To CELP or not to CELP ... at higher bitrates
Jean-Marc,
I am building a tool for producing the highest possible quality Internet
interviews for "podcasting" applications. The goal is to produce a perfect
recording of an interview or conference -- and giving the participants a
glitch-free experience is secondary.
My approach, therefore, is to build a Windows "wave" file asynchronously by
using a streaming

XScale realtime encoding possible?
Hi all,
I've got a 400MHz XScale-PXA255 board, and I want to stream voice from
it over a network connection at 28.8baud. This calls for a capable
voice encoder which can encode at about 24kbps. I was damn happy when I
found Speex and said goodbye to MP3 :)
However, i'm still a long way from realtime encoding using speexenc, is
this possible?

wideband bitrates
Hi,
I found this list of Speex bitrates in the mail archive.
http://www.xiph.org/archives/speex-dev/200306/0004.html
Can somebody confirm that this list is correct?
I am wondering about the following:
- On the Speex website it says: "Speex is based on CELP and is designed to
compress voice at bitrates ranging from 2 to 44 kbps."
while the bitrates listed here are e.g. 84400 for

ultra wide band packet questions
Hi Jean Marc and List,
So I have started finally fiddling around with Ultra-wideband mode.
It appears to be very similar in operation to Wide mode, except that
when peering into the packet structure it looks like (and these are
kind of questions as much as statements here):
1. update rate 0 is not used in UWB- only 1-4?
2. The total bits used for each UWB update rate seem to be as follows:

Check http://wiki.debian.org/NonFreeIETFDocuments
That page contains a section titled "Template for RFC authors to

Encoder performance on ARM9
Hi there,
I've just started to work with the great speex encoder on ARM9-based
embedded platform. This is my configuration:
CPU: Cirrus Logic EP9315 @ 200 MHz (ARM920T)
o.s.: Linux 2.6.9-rc2-ep93xx
GCC: gcc version 3.3.3 (DENX ELDK 3.1 3.3.3-10) without MaverickCrunch support
ogg library: 1.0
speex command line configuration: ./configure --enable-fixed-point
--enable-arm4-asm
The code is

Speex: Open-source, patent-free speech coding
Hi,
We would like to announce the first release of the Speex project. Speex
(http://speex.sourceforge.net) is an open-source (LGPL), patent-free
compression format allowing an alternative to expensive proprietary
codecs. Unlike Ogg Vorbis which compresses general audio, Speex is
designed especially for speech. For that reason, Speex is meant to be a
complement to Vorbis. Since it is specialized

VAD CPU usage
Hi Jean-Marc
I am using speex in my voip app (wideband mode). I
have noticed that when VAD kicks in, CPU considerably
increases (bitrate decreases to 4 kbps). It takes
about 7 ms to encode one frame versus 0.5 ms (for
speech). This happens regardless preprocessor is used.
Although the issue seems to be driver dependent, it
occurs on XP, Vista and Mac OS X.
Besides complexity and quality, this

Updated Speex RTP Internet Draft
Hi all,
Please find below an updated Speex Internet Draft document.
It would be good if we could book some time for discussion on Speex at the IETF
meeting in Vienna (scheduled for 14th July). The cutoff for submission is
9:00am EDT, (GMT -04:00), 30th June.
Comments and feedback welcomed!

Microsoft RTAudio
Hi people
Just wondered what your thoughts are on Microsoft's RTAudio codec that they use in their Unified Communications stuff:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=5D79B584-79C9-42A8-90C4-4AB3F03D19C4&displaylang=en
They let people license it to use in their own products. I couldn't find any sample clips of RTAudio encoded speech. Apart from being $35000 less
