Looping through all possible combinations of cases
Hello!
I have a regular data frame (DATA) with 10 people and 1 column
('variable'). Its cases are people with names ('a', 'b', 'c', 'd',
'e', 'f', etc.). I would like to write a function that would sum up
the values on 'variable' of all possible combinations of people, i.e.
1. I would like to write a loop - in such a way that it

DRYing - similar named fields, etc.
I''m sorry - just couldn''t come up with a subject that describes the
problem :(
Anyway, this is my problem. I have a long list of fields that need to
be displayed when a ''show'' is requested on the controller. I''m now
doing the list.rhtml and looking for a DRY way to do the following.
For each data item, I have 2 fields - one is the item name, the

Fuzzy searching
Hi, everyone,
Just wondering if someone had come up with a good way to do fuzzy
searches if you use MySQL as your database (we tried switching to
PostgreSQL, but that ended up adding even more problems). Ferret sounds
great, but reading through the discussion it looks like we need to solve
the problem of write conflicts. I just wrote a post in ruby-talk about
using KirbyBase maybe to solve

Win XP / Ferret & Acts_as_ferret .dump problem
Hey,
Has anyone managed to bypass or fix the ferret''s .dump method problem?
When I include acts_as_ferret my whole rails app just blows up because
of Ferret''s .dump method. Ex:
---
print "\t hello".dump >> "\t hello">Exit code: 0
---
---
require ''ferret''
print "\t hello".dump >> " hello"(NUL

Asterisk Realtime and SIP configuration
Dear all
I'm writing to the list for help as a last resort. I've exhausted all
other options, so please forgive me. I've lurked here for years but
never actually posted.
I'm trying to get Asterisk Realtime SIP configuration working, but it
refuses to do so. I have all the necessary configuration in place,
Asterisk makes a connection to the database, which can be verified with

stop words and /''s
Hi new version of ferret and acts as ferret have sorted out the scary
glibc *** linked list pointer errors, thank god! New version are good
but some searches are still not working. It is mostly the stop words
ones. For example the "For Sale/Free/Swap" fails but works when "for" is
stripped out. I have read all the recent posts regarding this issue and
failed to get it to

Noice words...
Hi
I use acts_as_ferret on an app that is in Danish and English. In
Danish english words like "and" and "under" has meaning. Is it
possible to make ferret search for these words? As it is now a seach
for "under" returns nothing even-though I know the word is present in
the index.
Cheers

Stop words, fields, StandardAnalyzer quagmire
Hello,
I''m using: Ruby 1.8.6, Rails 1.2.3, ferret 0.11.4, acts_as_ferret from
svn stable.
I''ve had quite a day wrestling with trying to remove the use of
stopwords. The problem was that when searching for words like "no" or
"the", no results were found. I found a confusing thing behavior that
has taken me some time to figure out, and I hope sharing it

indexing tuples (example: "frog" => 123) as opposed to words
Hi,
I need to map words in a document back to there original word id''s in my
database. For example, if I had the sentence "I eat food" and I was
searching for "food" I would obviously get the document back as a
result. For my particular problem I need to not only get the document id
but also the id of the match.
Suppose my original sentence was actually

Stop words in queries
I''ve run in to an issue that I''m not sure how to address. Basically, I''m
building queries with occur_default Search::BooleanClause::Occur::MUST,
and using the StandardAnalyzer which does stop filtering. The stop
filtering is working beautifully on the indexing side. The problem is
that when the query parser parses through a query with a stop word in
it, say

aaf and stop words; query parser
I''ve been trying to implement acts_as_ferret in my latest project and ran into a snag. If I do a search for ''auditor state'' then the search works perfectly. If I include a stop word, as in ''auditor of state'', then I get no results. I''d prefer not to set stop words to nil and index everything.
The solution, that I have yet to attempt, is to use

Sorting by two fields
I have a list of TimeSheet objects from an ealier AR query, which I
can sort by the full name of the user like so:
@time_sheet_entries.sort! { |a,b| a.user.full_name <=> b.user.full_name }
I can sort by the started time like so:
@time_sheet_entries.sort! { |a,b| a.start_time <=> b.start_time }
My question is how do I do a sort so that the list is sorted primarily
by user.full_name

stop words in query
Hello all,
Quick question, I''m using AAF and the following custom analyzer:
class StemmedAnalyzer < Ferret::Analysis::Analyzer
include Ferret::Analysis
def initialize(stop_words = ENGLISH_STOP_WORDS)
@stop_words = stop_words
end
def token_stream(field, str)
StemFilter.new(StopFilter.new(LowerCaseFilter.new(StandardTokenizer.new(str)),
@stop_words))
end

Newcomer perceived problems with AAF/Ferret
I blogged about some of the problems with aaf in production
(http://www.jroller.com/BrightCandle) yesterday but inspired by the
poitive response I thought I would share the perceived problems and
discuss some of the potential solutions to help newcomers and make aaf
work as if by magic just like Rails does.
All of these problems boil down to one simple problem, running acts as

Ignore apostrophes in words
Hi, I just started using ferret and the aaf plugin and it seems to work
quite nicely. However, my fields are very short (titles of music) and I
don''t think may users will be typing in apostrophes when they are
looking for something. Right now, for a simple document such as "what
i''ve done" I''d like it to be indexed as "what ive done" instead. Right
