winbindd: getent passwd yields empty GECOS field
Dear all; I'm trying to use winbindd to resolve names in an AD setup. I can authenticate just fine, but I've noticed that for some users "getent passwd" returns a GECOS field populated with displayName from the LDAP servers and for others is does not. For example: $ getent passwd user1 user1:*:1111111111:2222222222:John Doe:/home/user1:/bin/bash $ getent passwd

Samba, Time Machine, and ADS
Dear all; I?m running smbd 4.9.5-Debian and I?m struggling to get Time Machine support to work. The server is running Debian Buster, and the client is macOS High Sierra. I can mount the share just fine on its own, but as soon as I tell Time Machine to ?Back Up Now?, it says ?Preparing Backup,? ?Looking for Backup Disk,? and then nothing. The little red exclamation mark tells me that "The

issue with fruit:model not using avahi correctly?
hey folks,   I am trying to change the fruit:model value for changing the icon in the mac os finder. After digging a little bit in the source code I saw that "source3/smbd/avahi_register.c" does not contain a line where info like <service> <type>_device-info._tcp</type> <port>0</port> <txt-record>model=RackMac</txt-record> is added to avahi. SID mapping: Samba and SSSD
Dear all; Would anybody be able to tell me what the idmap configuration is to have Samba do the same SID-to-user/group mapping as the SSSD defaults? I was convinced I saw it on this list or the wiki not too long ago, but I cannot seem to find it. // Best wishes; Johan

Duplicate entry in macOS "Network" when using Samba 4.9.1 and avahi 0.7
Hi. I configured a simple samba server. As I need this server to be available in macOS ?Network? list, I configured avahi. When I start smb.service and avahi-daemon.service I get two results in the ?Network? section. When I don?t use avahi I get no entry. Why are there two entries and which best practice can I use to have only one entry? Thanks! Steven ##################################### cat

MacOS clients - best options
Hi list, we have migrated a single node Samba server from Ubuntu Trusty to a 3-node CTDB Cluster on Debian Bullseye with Sernet packages. Storage is CephFS. We are running Samba in Standalone Mode with LDAP Backend. Samba Version: sernet-samba 99:4.18.2-2debian11 I don't know if it is relevant here's how we have mounted CephFS on the samba nodes: (fstab):/samba /srv/samba ceph

Samba-4.10.4 strange behaviour
Hello All, I'm new to the list and I don't have much of experience with samba. I have a test setup on CentOS 7.8 with samba-4.10.4 and samba-vfs-glusterfs . When my client mounts the samba share via vers=1.0 , the user sees the share properly (uid, gid, mode are just like on gluster). When the share is mounted with vers=2.0 or not specified (anything higher) the files are owned by

Samba-4.10.4 strange behaviour
Hi Felix, thanks for the share. Sadly it doesn't work and I don't know how to start debugging this one. I tried your config (had to switch from domain member to standalone) but it's the same: [global] ??????? netbios name = yourName ??????? workgroup = yourWorkgroup ??????? realm = YourRealm ??????? log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m ??????? max log size = 50 ??????? security = ads
