OS X client symlinks
When you say “real symlinks on OSX” do you mean an “alias” that Finder would create? Or a Unix-type symlink using the “ ln -s file link” command in Terminal? A Finder alias is not the same as a Unix-type symlink.
My NAS runs Debian Linux with version 4.3.11 of smbd; my clients are all OSX Mojave.
If I create an alias using Finder on the NAS, it behaves like a normal alias in OSX UNLESS I move

vfs fruit unable to create xattr and ACL from OS X 10.10.4
Hello
I am trying to integrate OS X 10.10.4 clients into existing Samba infractructure run by our IT department.
We are currently using Samba 4.2.3.
File share is stored on iSCSI array with ext4 filesystem which should support both ACL and XATTR.
We are trying to setup vfs_fruit module to avoid possible performance problems on OS X clients.
We do NOT user netatalk.
Current vfs_fruit config:

Duplicate entry in macOS "Network" when using Samba 4.9.1 and avahi 0.7
Hi.
I configured a simple samba server. As I need this server to be available in macOS ?Network? list, I configured avahi.
When I start smb.service and avahi-daemon.service I get two results in the ?Network? section.
When I don?t use avahi I get no entry.
Why are there two entries and which best practice can I use to have only one entry?
Thanks!
Steven

Fruit/AAPL behavior
I have a share with approximately 5000 folders in the base directory. The
performance on an OS X client is somewhat less than exciting. I compiled
the latest Samba 4.3 tarball and enabled fruit per the modules man page,
however directory listing performance still takes a few seconds.
I've cranked the fruit debug level up to 10 and can see that it is getting
used ("fruit_stat called for

Server-Side Copy Offload Limitations
Hello,
Server-Side Copy Offload wiki page states in Limitations section that
- Both source and destination files must reside on the same Samba share!
I was able to copy file between different shares located on the same zfs
Pool without generating network traffic. Shares were created on Debian 8
with zfs filesystem and client was Windows Server 2016 machine mapping
shares as separate drives.

Extended attributes not working on mac
I worked with Netatalk for years and want to switch to Samba now. Currently i use Ubuntu 20.04. and Debian 9 before, i had no issues with netatalk at all.
As soon as i try to add a color tag (e.g. yellow) with Mac OS 10.15.5, the tag appears shortly but hides one second later. The file system is ZFS with no special options configured.
I tried the Ubuntu package but also the builds from source

Thanks for the suggestion though.
I've now been trying out the various Apple specific flags in vfs_fruit (

with no success thus far.
Example settings tried in smb.conf:

winbindd: getent passwd yields empty GECOS field
Dear all;
I'm trying to use winbindd to resolve names in an AD setup. I can
authenticate just fine, but I've noticed that for some users "getent
passwd" returns a GECOS field populated with displayName from the LDAP
servers and for others is does not. For example:
$ getent passwd user1
user1:*:1111111111:2222222222:John Doe:/home/user1:/bin/bash
$ getent passwd

I?m not sure if this is related, but there was a regression a while back in handling resource forks in folder icons. It was supposed to be fixed in 4.10.13 but I don?t think it quite works yet and I haven?t had the time to test it further yet.

issues with Time Machine - did macOS change how they handle things?
TL;DR: Time Machine cannot create a *new* backup on my shared drive, but can add to an *existing* backup.
I'm running macOS Catalina and my Time Machine backs up to a Debian 10 server with NetAtalk and Avahi. Since Mavericks macOS has preferred SMB, and given SMB is marginally faster I decided to switch to using SMB for the Time Machine shares. On a fresh AFP share I can start a new Time

Optimal File Permissions for Shared Access Between Windows and Linux
I am experiencing challenges configuring optimal file permissions for a
Samba share on my Raspberry Pi. My goal is to enable shared access for
my wife, who uses an iPhone 13, to the directory

directory |/mnt/shared|.
Here is my Samba configuration:
