Converting OS X UTF-8 NFD to UTF-8 NFC
To make rsync work better when rsyncing between OS X (whose filenames
are encoded in UTF-8 NFD form) and just about every other OS (whose
filenames are encoded in UTF-8 NFC form), I wrote a little patch for
rsync that converts the filenames to NFC before sending them to the
other side.
It uses libidn for that, and currently has no option to enable/disable
this behaviour, but since on OS X all

Mount unix samba 4 share to osx client without mangled file names
Hi Ralph,
Thanks, it works as expected with 4.2.0rc2! I simply followed the manual
and added this to the share's config:
vfs objects = catia fruit streams_xattr
fruit:resource = file
fruit:metadata = netatalk
fruit:locking = netatalk
fruit:encoding = native
Thanks for your help.

Mount unix samba 4 share to osx client without mangled file names
Hello,
I have a unix server (arch linux) with samba 4.1.14. The share has files
inside which where created directly on the server. Linux and OSX
(10.10.1) clients should access the share and store files.
When I mount this samba share into the osx client (10.10.1), files
created directly on the server with special names like `File with
"quotes"` are displayed mangled (`C7XSWH~V`) on the

Character encoding mystery
Hi everyone,
I have a very annoying character encoding problem. Have a look to this:

samba 3 accented names case mangling with win 98
Hi all,
banging my head on the wall here... I think I'll never really understand
codepages stuff.
smbd is v 3.0.1, client is french win98 - yuk
my smb.conf reads:
unix charset = UTF-8
display charset = UTF-8
dos charset = CP850
when I create a folder/file with accents in it, I can create it ok, but
reading proves impossible.
If i create file ??????, it shows ok in the file explorer

search and UTF-8 normalization forms (NFD)
Hello,
on a system with dovecot 2.2 I've got a mailbox containing multiple mails
from a person called Kr?ger, but From: header encoded differently.
Some are encoded in UTF-8 normalization form decomposed (as used by Mac OSX),
that is u and umlaut accent as sperate combined codepoints
instead of one ?:

[PATCH v2 0/4] New getprogname module
Hi,
as discussed in [1], this series adds a new getprogname module.
All it does is providing a getprogname function, much like what is
found on e.g. *BSD systems, and using it in gnulib instead of progname.
Also, using it explicitly by modules avoids gnulib users the need of
either use the progname module (GPL), or to provide program_name (and
call set_program_name manually, which is not always

accented characters in isolinux
hey people
I'm new to the list and would like to say thanks to everyone that has
worked on syslinux/isolinux. It's one of those tools that everyone uses
at some stage but no-one ever really takes much notice of it - mainly
because *it just works*. So congrats ...
Now onto my question - I am customizing Fedora Core and I want to change
the isolinux boot.msg screen to display some

accented share name ok with smbclient but not with smbmount
Hi,
I'm trying to mount with smbmount a WinNT4.0 share resource from a Linux
running Samba 2.2.2.=20
WinNT box is installed with code page=3D850.
The resource name includes grave accented characters, in particular: =E0.
I'm trying to smbmount with:
$ smbmount '//NThostname/of=E0rs' /mnt/ofors -o
ip=3Dxxx.xxx.xxx.xxx,username=3Dofors,password=3D******,workgroup=3Dwwwwww

Accented characters in share names
Hello,
I'm facing a problem that should be common but for which I don't find
much info. I'm trying to smbmount some smb share served by a w2k3
server. I've no problem to mount the shares unless their name includes
accented letters. I've successfully replaced the spaces in the names by
\040 but replacing the accented letter by their UTF-8 and latin-1 in
octal value, but

Spotlight & accented characters in share name
Hi,
I finally found out why I?ve had trouble getting Spotlight searches working well with the latest installation I?m working on. It looks like searches won?t work if there are any accented characters in the share name.
In this case it is the ? character. Running mount in macOS shows it like this:
//user at server.address/Share_with_the_O%CC%88_character on /Volumes/Share_with_the_?_character
