problem with worker status
Hi,
I have a page were users can start jobs that may take several hours to
run. BackgrounDrb is perfect for me and seems to be working well most of
the time but some times I have the following problem:
My worker is set up like this:
class UploadWorker < BackgrounDRb::MetaWorker
set_worker_name :upload_worker
set_no_auto_load(true)
def create(args = nil )
file = args[:file]

Arity?
Hello,
First off, nice improvements hemant! Thanks for all the hard work. I
just whipped up a new worker for a scheduled job that sends digest
emails. Very smooth.
However, moving some of my old backgroundrb into new backgroundrb
isn''t going quite as smoothly. I have a import worker that takes a
number of parameters and then is started dynamically. Here''s the a

Get "some read error" on calls to worker
I''m running the latest from svn (rev 285). I''ve been having a problem
launching a process repeatedly. What happens is that I get a debug
message "some read error" and then the worker refuses to run again.
I''ve stripped my worker down to just doing a puts and it still happens.
Like the other threads I want to launch my workers as needed, however I

Updates and Fixes and more of awesome stuff
1. Whenever you ask BackgrounDRb to perform a particular task using:
MiddleMan.ask_work(:worker => :rss_worker,:worker_method =>
:fetch_url, :data => "www.google.com")
Your task would be performed then and there. But, if your worker is
busy, task won''t be queued, except in socket buffer.
And your request may get lost. This isn''t generally a problem

right usage of bdrb
Hi,
i''m going to implement a syndication-service, which will get lists in
xml with some meta-data an enclosed video files, which will get encoded
at the end. The syndication run will be startet every five minutes of
a full hour.
So i thought to build 4 Worker. One for checking which feeds to
syndicate (syndication_worker) at a specific time, one for processing
the list

More pleasant / concise API
Hi there,
Just a small suggestion :
The following apis could be a bit more concise / shorter / pleasant I thought.
This is particularly difficult, my brain stumbles on this each time
when scanning thorugh the code :)
set_no_auto_load(true)
Could it be two apis instead?
auto_load
no_auto_load
and the other one :
worker_name :important_worker (no set_ prefix)
thanks,

Deploying to a staging server using Capistrano: how to start up BackgrounDRb?
Hi.
I am using BackgrounDRb to process thumbnails and upload to S3 -
things are hunky-dory in development (thumbs are generated, these are
uploaded to S3, the metadata is saved to trhe DB, and I get a nice
status page updated by periodic calls via ask_status), but when I
tried to deploy to our staging server and stop/start BackgrounDRb via
Capistrano, things blew up - well, not exactly,

querying status of worker with job_key
Hi,
Is it possible to start a worker with job_key and then ask_status of that
specific worker with the job_key?
MiddleMan.ask_work(:worker => :auth_worker, :job_key=>''1'',
:worker_method => :auth)
and then
MiddleMan.ask_status(:worker => :auth_worker, :job_key=>''1'')

Cannot connect when spawning new workers on demand
Hi!
I''m using the latest&greatest backgroundrb with rails 2.0.2 on ubuntu
dapper.
I''ve made an app that lets you run a query on several servers at once,
which are selected at runtime. Therefore, for each server that is
selected, I spawn a new worker and assign its work.
After everything is completed, the workers are deleted.
I often get this error:

Query All Worker
What does the method query_all_workers() do? There is no documentation
on what this method returns (1.0.1 version).

can''t call any methods on workers
Hi,
I''m a long time backgroundrb user, still stuck using the very ancient
original version from Ezra (not even Ezra''s 2.0 version, I''m using the
one that didn''t really have a version number). The 2.0 version did
very little but crash for me. Anyway I finally got some time set
aside to try out this new version you all have been developing.

When I add the line ''reload_on_schedule true'' to my worker, my tests

Newbie question on Scheduling
I''ve scheduled cron jobs etc before, but I''m curious as to how to layout a
worker properly. Here''s a basic example of what one of my workers looks
like:
class FooWorker < BackgrounDRb::MetaWorker
set_worker_name :foo_worker
def create(args = nil)
logger.info("Starting test: #{Time.now.strftime("%T")}")
run_test

Handling exceptions
Is there a convention for handling exceptions within BackgrounDRb workers?
For example, I have a worker which does some asynchronous data processing
(*not* a scheduled worker) based on some things in the database. However,
if an exception is raised within that worker, then the process for that
worker is killed off. Ideally I would want that worker to just silently
fail and be optimistic that it

Thread_pool bug?
I have a previous question regarding long tasks and the thread_pool (sorry
for the dup, I didn''t see the first go through). To try and track things
down, I made a change based on a suggestion found in the archives. I moved
my import contacts worker to its own file and set the pool_size to 1.

Need help in passing parameters to a background job method
<backgroundrb-devel at rubyforge.org>I am trying to send email as a background
process from within a Rails app.
The goal is that when I go to http://mysite.com/foo/bar, the background job
kicks in and sends an email out. The relevant code snippets are below.
This errors out with a wrong number of arguments passed (2 for 1) message. I
