Is it possible to lower the domain and forest functional level
I made a try translating the group names one by one in the setup/provision_users.ldif file. I added a private directory, but this did not fix the problem, and for some reason the other path still appears testparm -v | grep private Load smb config files from /opt/samba/etc/smb.conf Loaded services file OK. Weak crypto is allowed by GnuTLS (e.g. NTLM as a compatibility fallback) Server role: ROLE_ACTIVE_DIRECTORY_DC Press enter to see a dump of your service definitions private

using samba-tool from a domain member other than the DC
Top posting. Is this in freenas jail, perhaps? If so, I'd take a long hard look at the underlying environment. Semi off-topic. FreeNAS on FreeBSD has a whole set of really weird issues, IMO. For example; I was trying to get rsync or rdiff-backup to run [not in a jail, but just in the base context] and performance was really terrible and it would bomb for larger file syncs to a remote Linux

samba4: samba-tool and (unix) uids
Hello, at my universities CS computer pools we're trying to migrate our samba3 based NT domain to AD with samba4-rc1. In the past we had a little script which our users could run on their own from their linux account which created a samba user with their own uid/gid and set their password (via smbpasswd). We're trying to recreate this behaviour with "samba-tool user create"

In a word, *NO* A classic NT4 style domain does not have a DNS server built in, your server could use Bind9 or similar, but it wouldn't be part of samba.
