Unable to transfer ForestDns/DomainDNS
You said, "From what you posted earlier, the domain already points to the new DC, you just need to get the DNS fsmo roles." how so? The fsmo show, shows PDC, which is the old DC. DC01 is the new one. Or am I missing something else? As far as keeping it online I will just move everything I can and then seize and shut it down. I can turn off the networking to it since it is a VM and

It is secure to transfer roles and demote DC?
Hello: I want transfer FSMO roles from a DC and then demote it, I was reading the wiki and there is an advice about a bug [1] with samba-tool that prevents that two roles be transferred, when you use "samba-tool fsmo transfer". The DC that I want to demote is also a file server. But if something goes wrong I don't want to reinstall the File Server. I can see that the bug is

another demoting that doesn't work
Hi, I have searched here, and noticed some discussion lately on problems demoting a dc. In my case, all roles are on DC2, and DC1 & DC3 know that: root at DC1:/var/log/samba# samba-tool fsmo show InfrastructureMasterRole owner: CN=NTDS Settings,CN=DC2,CN=Servers,CN=Default-First-Site-Name,CN=Sites,CN=Configuration,DC=samba,DC=company,DC=com RidAllocationMasterRole owner: CN=NTDS

4.7.x -> 4.9.x upgrade
So, there's been a fair bit of chatter on the list about upgrades failing. I haven't paid close attention, but IIRC, upgrading from 4.7 to 4.8 or 4.9 caused problems. So, just to clarify - this is an in-place upgrade that is failing, correct? Does this apply if, instead of an upgrade, one provisions a new DC on, say, 4.9 and joins it? In short, will this allow you to get your DCs to 4.9

How to Migrate Samba AD from one server to another
I would like to move a Samba AD from one server to another. I am finding the documentation on the web somewhat lacking. Can somebody point me to documentation that might help step me through an acceptable migration path? Will the command > samba-tool drs clone-dc-database <dnsdomain> --server=SERVER -targetdir=TARGETDIR essentially do what I want? Basically clone the AD on another

Transfer the FSMO roles
I've been thinking if it's better to make a new Samba 4 DC server instead upgrade the old DC and then transfer the FSMO roles to it and shut down the old server. This way the installation would be cleaner and free of any errors of the old installation. I'm using Samba 4.2.1 and the result of command below is: root at EMPRESA:~# samba-tool fsmo show InfrastructureMasterRole owner:

Unable to transfer ForestDns/DomainDNS
But that wasn't till 4.4? Right? I don't have that option with my version. I guess if I need to I could just spin up a new vm, build the source, join as DC, and then do that to remove it and the demote the new VM DC. Right? One more upgrade question
Hi, I have a running samba 4.7.6+dfsg~ubuntu-0ubuntu2.15 on a ubuntu 18.04 server and would like to upgrade to van Belle latest repo. My plan is plain simple: 1. Deploy a new ubuntu 18.04 server 2. Add van Belle repo 3. Install and *then* join the domain as a DC 4. Demote and remove the old one Is this OK? Thanks, best regards. -- *Marcio Merlone*

DC upgrade questions
Hi folks, Yet another upgrade question! Reading the mailing list regarding upgrades in the past few months has made me a little apprehensive. After now running a single Samba DC for a few months and excising the last remnants of the old Windows DC, I would like to join another Samba DC to the existing one. Current one (DC2) is running Samba 4.5 on Debian Stretch. samba-tool dbcheck looks clean

final tests fail with samba...can anyone help?
Hello, I just took an old PC and installed SuSE 7.0 on it. The machine has 32Mb of RAM, so I needed a slim installation and kernel, and this was the only package I could get to install without immense effort (I tried 5 other versions of small linux distros from linuxiso.org before this one). The version of Samba I installed on this Suse box is 2.0.7. From what I have read, this version SHOULD

Moving DC1 to a Virtual Machine
Hello I have primary and secondary Samba 4 DCs running very nicely with replication. I have DC1 using the official Backup scripts. We are moving these to virtual machines. We are changing the Linux OS on DC1 from Gentoo to Ubuntu. REAL DC1 = FSMO Role REAL DC1 = Gentoo REAL DC2 = Ubuntu VIRTUAL DC1 = Ubuntu What is the correct way to change DC1 to a virtual machine? Do I just restore from

Problem migrating PDC from one machine to another
Hi all, looking for a wee bit of help here. I've inherited 2 samba servers both running 2.2.7 Server 1, due to be pensioned off os the PDC and currently supports roaming profiles printing, home directories and an ldap service. Server 2 is the all singing all dancing new server that houses all the other directories used by our users. once we're down to 1 server the plan is to move to

Samba shares and samba server residing on different physical machines
Hi fellow Members!I'm Systems administrator at a school using SAMBA 4 as AD DC. As you know, WIN11 is at the doorstep and my "old" Samba4 Server (4.9) doesn't serve Windows Servers (Server 2019) very well, e.g. the latest issue is that the domain administrator cannot access the GPO's or other informations from the Samba-LDAP (authentication failure ?). I think that it has

R build failure under gcc 4.9's link time optimization
R fails to build with visibility on and gcc 4.9's link time optimzation, because of its practice of building part of it as archive first. Specifically it builds some bundled libraries as archive first, the symbols of which are then entirely invisible in gcc 4.9. The Matrix package also does this awful practice, with CHOLMOD.a COLAMD.a AMD.a SuiteSparse_config.a . One way of fixing R is:
