Read/Write over LAN Possible?
Yes, it's certainly possible. Take a look at the samba WiKi at: https://wiki.samba.org in particular https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Setting_up_Samba_as_a_Standalone_Server

broken link on http://us1.samba.org/samba/docs/SambaIntro.html
Hi there,
My name is Angelica and I was just checking out your page at http://us1.samba.org/samba/docs/SambaIntro.html and noticed that the the link to the Dilbert site on http://www.unitedmedia.com/comics/dilbert/ isn't working. I'm a Dilbert fan myself :) so I thought I'd mention a page I have bookmarked: http://www.answerconnect.com/articles/dilbert-fans It has a bunch of

Hi,
I need to create one or more NetBIOS host alias of my unique SAMBA server

file-sharing machine for our WORKGROUP.
I need that my clients see three differents host more than the real
fileserver;
I think the scope of virtual server was based on which virtual host I'll
contact I'll see the relative share: so

No write access on new shares until smbd is restarted
[my previous mail didn't register as an answer in the list it seems]
Yep - that's a standalone server. We're running the same configuration
(generated from a template) on over a hundred of servers, and just a few
manifest this "readonly until restart" behaviour.
I'm struggling to isolate any specific conditions that cause this at the
moment.
The users are added as Samba

How to connect to a Windows PC in LAN
Hi
I am a new bee to Linux in general. Please accept my apologies if the
question is not appropriate.
I have a LAN with 2 computers: One is CentOS and one is Windows XP.
I am trying to transfer file between 2 computers using LAN. Can you
please tell me how to do it?
I have tried Samba from the Applications menu.
Add a directory in there. Set it to Read only and Allow access to
everyone. I

Centos 8 minimal install
Hi R C.
The resulting installation is smaller than the image that you download through FTP, etc. When I first installed this OS during version 5, I was amazed that the installation took a mere fraction of the time it took to go through the menu. Heh.
Anyway, give it a whirl as it?s quick. I?m assuming you mean a headless installation.
Oh and I?m top posting because it?s logical.

samba 4 in AD 2008R2 without winbind
Hi all, my goal is to have samba (ubuntu 16.04 samba 4.3.11) validating internal user (just the user presents on /etc/passwd) on an existing AD 2008R2. I am making a fresh install and I did it using winbind, but this component puzzle me with id mapping, so I am trying to avoid the use of winbind.
Unfortunately, when I stop winbind I got always NT_STATUS_NO_LOGON_SERVERS; it seems like samba is not

Samba and different IPs
Hello,
is it possible to configure Shorewall for different network
environments? I am using it on a single Linux computer. When I am at
home, I am using an internal IP address (192.168.0.X), and when I am
using my cable modem, I get an internet IP assigned. I now want to be
able to use Samba/Windows Filesharing when at home and to disable it
when I am using my computer directly on the net.

-change in subfolders and files.
Basicly we will store the economysystem,

file locking question
Hi all,
If I have a linux server running samba for filesharing and I use NFS to
make these shares available on another linux server that also runs samba
to share the same shares will the locking still work properly?
I can use this to get around an issue with multiple authentication
domains and I suspect NFS is less chatty than SMB anyway so will mean a
peformance win as well across the WAN.

Update Samba
Hi,
Newbie question: I've installed samba_2.2.5 and it works great, got winbind
working have convinced boss types that it's a viable alternative to Windows
for some filesharing, however I originally did the configure and make
without specifying smbmount be included in the build but with some other
options, inlcude winbind and pam. If I run ./configure --with-smbmount and
do a make etc.

Samba and IEE1394
This might not be the correct group to post to, but maybe somone could
tell me wich groupd it should go to (as I haven't found any good
ones).
I have Windows XP machines with IEE1394 (FireWire) LAN. Windows has
built in support for OHCI compliant cards and can use them as a normal
NIC, but with 400Mbit.
This sollution is cheap and alot faster than normal a 100Mbit LAN. The

firewall and * suggestions
Hi,
I am going to set up an office of 30 employees and since it's the first
time I thought I will ask for suggestions (trying to make a CentOS base
office :) ). I was planning to re use an old Compaq LPr PII 450, sw
mirrored scsi 10000rpm disks, 448Mb RAM, to build a CentOS based
firewall and I was wondering if this hardware would be enough to serve
30 clients (I already have a centos
