I am running samba as a fileserver, having some users (LDAP backend) and
lots of files. No machines ever joined this setup. Now I want to join
some clients, but want to upgrade to AD before I do that. Configuration
is quite old, but had no issues so far. I've been following

ntvfs was written to for S4 but it was decided that it would not be used
as it didn't have the capabilities required, so smbd from S3 was used
instead. So in answer to your question, use s3fs.

DC and shares separation
Hi All,
I've got a Samba4.5.15 server which acts both as an DC and a file
server. I'd like to break the setup into two servers without forcing the
users to redo their mappings and links which point the DC's name or fqdn.
My idea is to rename the DC (hostname and netbios) and assign its old
the another server with shares only. Is it possible to do it safely
without disrupting the

Rename domain during classicupgrade step?
I can see in the docs that a domain rename is not recommended/supported
by Samba for an already provisioned domain. However, what I can't work
out is if this is not possible during the classicupgrade step either?
Does this make any difference, or would it present the same difficulties
as renaming an already provisioned Samba AD?
It case what I'm asking is not quite clear - I have a

Quite a lot, AD relies on DNS, it sounds like the DC cannot find its own
records, probably because /etc/hosts isn't setup correctly, you need to
have the machines ipaddress and fqdn in

Moving users from a Samba 3.6 to 4.9 (tdb)
Hello,
I have an old 3.6 server to be replaced with a new 4.9 one. They are
standalone, using tdbsam backend.
I copied system users and group, then /var/lib/samba/*.tdb from the old
to the new one. However, obviously the newer samba absolutely doesn't
care about my old user database. "pdbedit -L" returns nothing on the
new server.
Is there some upgrade step I'm missing here?

LDAP SSL
Hi Rowland,
Fair comment. This is not a new domain and we are migrating to AD.
The box in question runs Samba 3.6 (PDC and a physical box) and as such we are not able to directly migrate it. We are adding a Samba 4 box (a VM) , to which will become the new PDC . This box will then be used to migrate to AD. The Samba 3 box will converted as a file server.
The confusion in smb.conf is possibly

Samba4.6 - Groups creation/import fails
Hello,
Actually migrating users/groups from samba3 to samba4 (in a separate
domaine), i succeeded in importing users/gruops and their attributes.
But For a reason i don't know some (a few) groups are not being created,
and i get this error:
"Failed to create group "MYGROUP" - samldb: Account name
(sAMAccountName) 'MYGROUP' already in use! "

Can't access samba because "session setup failed: NT_STATUS_INVALID_SID"
Thanks Rowland,
I didn't think i was doing all of this in an outdated way (it really makes
sense, as much of the tutorials i've followed come from before 2010 and
there's barely no recent tutorials regarding these issues).
So i'm gonna follow your suggestion. However, how can i deal with the LDAP
server? This base is big and it's a mandatory feature i need to implement

Creating a new Samba BDC and promoting to PDC
If I go with the suggestion to just set up a new AD-DC server, how do I
move my data to this from the old server (which uses TDBSAM)?

How to migrate Active Directory from one Samba4 server to another
Hello!
We are using a Samba4.0.0alpha19 (Resara 1.1.2) based domain controller in a small production environment and because the Resara development has ended we want to switch to a plain Samba4 beta based Ubuntu 12.04/Zentyal Server.
I have installed and configured the new server with the same domain-name and the same hostname like the old server.
How can i export the Active Directory from the

Change hostname of the main domain controller of the Active Directory
Hi,
With Samba4 and Active Directory the hostname of the server is read
during provision, to set the netbios name. It's even asked to set
/etc/hostname and /etc/hosts in respect with the chosen domain/realm names.
I've seen that on real windows AD that it's possible to change the
hostname of the domain controller with netdom command, but is there a
way to do so on Samba4 ?
