member server resolv.conf question
Yesterday I was "tailing" a log file (nmbd, I think) and noticed complaints by my member server that there was another "domain master" at the ipaddress on my DC1. This morning Windows clients are being denied updates to "116.168.192.in-addr-arps/IN" (which I believe is the reverse zone.) I think I have an error in my smb.conf file for this server as I have had an

administrator does not have permission
In the Windows world side when an "administrator" cannot 'take ownership' of a file share, the docs discuss the "System" account being used as it (System account) has greater permissions than that of the administrator. I remembered reading this page https://wiki.samba.org/index. php/The_SYSTEM_Account and have now re-read said page *carefully*. There I find this

linux client join DC how?
I did a fresh install of Debian with the desktop. I know from Ubuntu that the network is handled differently in the desktop and the server versions. So, I am assuming it is a similar situation with Debian. I could be wrong but . . . When kerberos installs via the script it (the script) suggests accepting the 'defaults on the next three screens.' The first screen included the correct

W7 client cannot adjust file permissions via ADUC
I have been improving my DC. I now have a DC01, DC02 and a DCMEMBER01. All running sernet-samba 4.1.16 on Debian 7.8.0 thanks to Louis' (old) scripts. (Any linux client work has gone on hold, for the moment.) Next step was to adjust the file permissions as instructed on "Setup and configure file shares with Windows ACLs". When I access the "Computer Management" (thru ADUC

Fwd: Installing EnterpriseSamba (Sernet-samba) on Ubuntu
I will add here that my server provisioned yesterday afternoon. However, I did not have time to do any testing. So, this morning testing and the first thing I discovered was "sernet-samba-ad" service was NOT running. I found a Debian Wheezy sernet samba posting (via Google) and within it read that users need to edit "/etc/default/sernet-samba" as follows: # ---- SETUP

Don't use .local
I expected to re-provision the domain. (That is easy, now.) Okay, so now the question becomes after the re-provision of the domain on the DC what needs to be changed on the MEMBER server. Obviously, the hostname needs to be corrected and check any needed changes within the smb.conf file. Thoughts? --- ------------------------- Bob Wooden of Donelson Trophy 615.885.2846 (main)

sernet samba4 on Ubuntu
Yes, it did install a bunch of packages from the sernet site. So far all the tests are failing. Seems that Sernet put samba under slightly different directories so I am struggling with testing. I was hoping there was some documentation on sernet site that I was having trouble finding, obviously not. Give me some time. It is just different again (from CentOS howto I had used in the past.) I

bug 11573
I am building a 64bit machine for a DC (CentOS 7) following the instructions on the Samba wiki. Installed Samba 4.3.1.tar.gz and when I try to provision the domain I get: ERROR(ldb): uncaught exception - operations error at ../source4/dsdb/samdb/ldb_modules/password_hash.c:2241 Search the string and it is bug 11573 (assigned to Andrew.) I realize that he will work on it when he gets time

linux client join DC how?
I have seen mentioned in other posts that when joining a DC with your linux client there is a way to do it and NOT use Powerbroker Open (new name for Likewise-Open). Don't use .local
During the Christmas holiday I created a AD DC & a MEMBER server (both on Debian 7.7.0) with these scripts (https://secure.bazuin.nl/scripts/) and thank you, L.P.H. van Belle. However, I have created them with a *.local TLD (that now I need to change.) I will need to adjust my hostname files, need to re-configure the kerberos install and of course Bind9. The hostname files I know how to

getting NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE
I have been having issues with my W7 client "access is denied" to changing the security (user permissions) settings and have been posting regarding that issue yesterday. I have discovered that my "ads join member server" is not completely joined (I think.) I discovered a post from February 2014, by Louis "[Samba] member joined, but . . ." and ran some of his

NT_STATUS_CONNECTION_REFUSED, again!!!
At one point, I thought the same. Tried a "sleep 5" and still got some failures. (That was before I started counting the fails.) This is a P4 3.2Ghz with 1Gb RAM. Could it be that sluggish (at that moment) and need a "sleep 10" or "sleep 15" or more? It worked on my VM (of course it is running on a multi-core Xeon processor so maybe a sleep?) I'm going to try

setting up W7 profiles
Okay, so I did this to myself. I overlooked an important sentence on the "https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Samba_%26_Windows_Profiles". The sentence that instructs to do "Profile share using Windows ACLs" ***OR*** "Profile share with using POSIX ACLs". So, I have reset the permissions to how they were before I messed them up doing the "POSIX ACLs" part.
