Samba4, browselist, nbt and wins
Hi folks,
i'am still confused when searching around for samba4 adc, wins and
browselist.
In my DCs smb.conf I have activated the server service nbt, defined wins
support = yes and could not see my domain controller in browselist.
Before provision from samba3 with ldap, I renamed the pdc, because the
old one had the same name like the domain (was working well over years).
Today my

Netbios Browsing with 4.1.7 - Can I get some clarification on how to use "internal nbt server" (or if I am even able to)
I have been searching around - I cant seem to figure out if netbios
browsing is supposed to work or not.
# /usr/sbin/nmbd -F -S
nmbd version 4.1.7 started.

Samba4 and 0.0.0.0:137 and 0.0.0.0:138 opened, why ? How do close it ?
Thanks for this answer.
As I understood, for example if parameter
bind interfaces only = yes is and
interfaces = lan0 (192.168.0.254) is
and if broadcast packet goes from 95.95.95.14 such packet will be dropped
(in other words) ?
Am I right ?
And other thing.
Why is 192.168.0.255 (network broadcast) opened for ?
May be exact such address (network broadcast) is inbtended for receiving
broadcasts

Hmmm, I founded some at

As I saw these patches was already implemented.
But is it possible to receive broadcast not to 0.0.0.0 but to x.y.z.255 ?
This is network broadcast either.
And opened 0.0.0.0 even with checking of source net is quite insecure from
net security point of view.
I think so.
May be is it necessary to add

Functionality of Nmbd at Active Directory mode of Samba4 !
P. p. S.: Oh, I have remember.
Quite important thing.
There are some soft where is not address line where you can put
\\server\folder address to access or you can not get access resource via
\\server\folder, it only via computer list.
For example: Far.
By typing \\server - there is error.
Only: Alt+F1/F2, network, MS Windows Network, GroupName, CompName.
If it is visible - Samba4 with Nmbd, it is

I actually have nmbd running on my Samba 3.x domain member server.
Does nmbd need an special setup for maintaining the network browsing
list for windows machines?

Samba4 and 0.0.0.0:137 and 0.0.0.0:138 opened, why ? How do close it ?
I have Samba4 4.1.14 (built from sources) installed at Ubuntu 14.04 LTS x32
and acting as Standalone server at the time.
Here are 3 faces at Ubuntu: lo, lan and wan.
There are lines:
bind interfaces only = yes
interfaces = lo lan0
in smb.conf
But netstat -tulpn shows 0.0.0.0 binded address:
tcp 0 0 192.168.0.254:139 0.0.0.0:*

As far as Samba is concerned it uses both, DNS & NetBIOS, but instead of
using WINS, it uses DNS to find the machines and then 'nmbd' produces
the browsing list (this is

Functionality of Nmbd at Active Directory mode of Samba4 !
As I know runnig of Nmbd at Acitve Directory mode is quite unofficial now
(but possible) .
I will not ask why it is not reccomded to run Nmbd within Samba4 started at
AD mode.
But if somebody can tell, you are wellcome.
But when nmb code implementation is planned to AD part ?
That is when nmb functionnality adding to Samba4 acting as AD is planned ?

How is to make two ways or at least one way replication between Samba4 and
Windows wins ?
As I saw samba4wins project is down.

Samba4 and 0.0.0.0:137 and 0.0.0.0:138 opened, why ? How do close it ?
Rowland, as I you mentioned firstly, I have 3 faces: lo, lan, wan.
And you are right, 0.0.0.0 are all IPs.
I need only either listen to lo and lan or lan only, but not wan also.
But in my case and because of 0.0.0.0 are all faces, listening 0.0.0.0
doesn' t equal lo and lan (127.0.0.1 and 192.168.0.254) .
Yes, there is no 95.95.95.14 in netstat list, but 0.0.0.0 should cover and

Browing in Samba4 AD domain
Hello guys, Rowland :)
I recently had the opportunity to configure a Samba 3.x server which
acts as a WIN server. For testing purposes only, I've configured a
group of 4 Windows machines to use my Samba 3.x host as WINS server
but unfortunately those 4 hosts were not able to see each other in the
windows browsing list. I might guess WINS is only providing NetBIOS
name resolution but no

Samba4 4.5.0 acts as fileserver - there is not possible to login to !
I built from a scratch Samba4 4.5.0 version at Ubuntu 14.04 Lts x64.
Samba4 is set up as Standalone server, and nmbd, smbd and winbind daemons
are started.
User to OS is added by:
useradd -s /usr/sbin/nologin user -g 65534 -p password
then user is added to Samba4
/usr/local/samba/bin/smbpasswd -a user
After attempting to login to Saba4 server and provide usr/pass,

Disabling NBT
I would like to disable NBT on my network but I also want to put SAMBA to greater use. Is there any way to do this without NBT? If not, will a future version of SAMBA be available that can?
