I knew of that solution already, in fact I use it on my own network.

Static WINS entries
Is it possible to manually add entries to the WINS database on a Samba nmbd running as a WINS server?
Alternativily could I get the WINS nmbd to use DNS for hostsnames it can't resolve using it's own database.
I have several NT servers that seem to just vanish from the db after a while. One of my 2.2.3a boxes also did this for a pastime. Whilst I can do nbtstat -RR on NT or restart

Renewing WINS entries
Hi,
I posted this ages ago (http://lists.samba.org/archive/samba/2004-
September/093635.html) and never solved the problem so I thought I'd ask
again as I've been digging deeper and have more information.
I'm using Samba as a WINS server but it's not working reliably. The
initial registration works fine on startup but renewals sometimes fail.
I tested with a server for which

HOWTO add static entries to WINS
Hi all.
I want to add static entries to wins.I look over the book
<Samba-HOWTO-Collection> for the v3.2 of samba. That tell me "All you have
to do is add a line to wins.dat". I try this. But we should shutdown the

What can I do with samba4 or 3??

Force NT4 WINS ....
Greetings ...
I have a question ... does anybody know how to force a M$-WinNT4
computer to re-register it's WINS if we have restart Samba without
having restart the NT4 boxes?
Sometimes we have had to stop and start Samba because of lock problems,
and then our NT4 boxes don't show up in the Network-Nieghthood until
restart.
Thanks.

WINS clients fail to release/refresh records with Samba WINS server after reboot
Hi all,
We are running Samba 3.0.2a and using it as a domain controller and WINS server. After rebooting the server, we are unable to reach (i.e. looking up machines by name) some of our network PCs (Windows 2000 boxes), due to failure with WINS look up.
I investigated the wins.db file, and those Win boxes are not listed in there. If I use the command "nbtstat -RR" on those PCs to

Static Entries wins.dat/browse.dat
I've recently setup an iSCSI portal on my network and have taken some
servers offline. However, due to the requirements of certain software
programs I need to use UNC paths. I was able to fix this issue by
adding CNAME into my DNS. I'm still finding that certain programs
still require to view the browse list to find the appropriate server.
Since CNAME doesn't link to the

Samba 3.0.0-2 WINS Static entries
Hi,
I'm trying to add static entries to the wins.dat file, as per The Official Samba 3 How-to guide but can't get it to work.
If I add entries and just leave it be, the server responds with unknown host and If I restart nmbd it removes all the entries (static) that I manually added.
Am I doing something wrong or is this a bug ?

Problem with static WINS entries
Hi!
I need to add static entries to my Samba 3.0.9 WINS server but I can't.
Let's explain:
The "Samba Collection Howto" chapter "Network Browsing" , section
"Static WINS Entries" tells that I can edit my "wins.dat" file
(/opt/samba/var/locks/wins.dat) to set the TTL of some entries to 0 . No
matter if I edit the TTL of some existing entries

static wins entries for failover shares -- do Microsoft clients get confused?
On my RedHat Cluster I am trying to configure samba shares that can be
relocated or fail over from one node to anoter.
This is done by:
1. mounting the corresponding file system on the node from SAN
2. having the cluster assign the corresponding virtual ip number to that
node
3. I tried to run an aditional instance of samba for that share

static entries to WINS, how to do correct ?
Dear samba users,
I'm trying to add static entries to a samba WINS server (samba-1.9.18p8-51.2).
Therefore I have a file /etc/samba/lmhosts:
--------------------------------------------
klimt.iwr KLIMT
klee KLEE
--------------------------------------------
and start nmb with:
/usr/sbin/nmbd -d 3 -H /etc/samba/lmhosts
The problem now is:
Only if "wins proxy=yes"

Samba WINS query
I've had Samba 2 running just fine on my REDHAT 8 server and I've just upgraded to V3.04.
It seems to all work but.....
I tried to make it behave as a BDC WINS server as I've got Windows NT4 PDC and BDC servers and I need my Redhat box to act as a backup WINS server.
This I've now done I think.
But when I use WIN Manager from NT it doesn't think the WINS on the Linux box

static wins entries -- entries change after restart of corresponding Samba server
I am trying to use static wins entries, as stated in the Official Samba
Howto Collection.
One Samba server (VServer) is with wins service enabled. Another
(Server1) is not, but it has the wins server in its smb.conf.
When I set wins.dat at VServer:
"SERVER1#00" 0 192.168.6.231 192.168.1.231 66R
"SERVER1#03" 0 192.168.6.231 192.168.1.231 66R

IP to NetBIOS resolution
Hello,
Is there *any* way to reliablily determine the NetBIOS name of a computer
when you only know their IP address? I know it is very easy to find the IP
address from the NetBIOS name, but I can't seem to find any way of getting a
NetBIOS name from an IP..

netbios and interfaces
Hi all
I've a samba server listen on eth0 (everything ok) and eth2
server1 has eth2: 192.168.100.212 <--> 192.168.100.213 (another linux
server) with another interface 192.168.30.0/24
from network 192.168.30.0/24 I can ping 192.168.100.212 and works with
samba shares (but only using numeric IP)
I don't see any computers from windows machines.

Samba/Windows XP and SSH tunnelling
Hi,
I've been trying to get SSH tunnelling working with Samba. I'm using a
Windows XP and a RedHat 8.0 box. I've closely followed the instructions from
the HOWTO manual in order to set this up to no avail.
I think the problem comes from the fact that my lmhosts file has no effect
on the NetBIOS name cache when I preload it with the command 'nbtstat -R'. I
checked the

problem with cached netbios name of wins server
fc2, samba 3.0.9
The samba server is PDC.
Temporarily, the server was dhcp, which gave it the IP
192.168.1.64
we then set it to static 192.168.1.150, which is what
we want.
however, the different windows clients, on and off, on
ping and such, resolve INTRANET, the netbios name of
the pdc, to 192.168.1.64 still, despite me removing
wins.dat.
I even tried the following suggestion, to no avail

Samba over VPN
Have a 2003 server located outside of the Domain network over a VPN.
The server originally existed inside the network (10.1.1.0/24) but now
exists on 10.10.12.0/24. I can access shares over the VPN to the domain
controller, but when I try to log in as a domain user it says the domain
is unavailable.
I added the domain controller as a WINS server on the 2003 server.
