# man chmod
Example:
# chmod a+x file.bat
to set the x-bit for owner/group/other at once on a file.

Join QNAP to a Samba AD
Hello,
I'm currently stuck with a QNAP NAS appliance (don't buy this !)
I have a Sernet Samba 4.5 as an AD controller and my QNAP have a Samba 4.0.25
(latest update)
All i want is to join the QNAP to the AD, the QNAP will act as the file
server.
The join in the official way is okay but the uid / gid mapping is f*cked.
I tried almost everything, change the idmap,

setting up CYBERPOWER CP1500PFCLCD
Hi,
Another beginner question. I spend hours trying to find the solution for
how to configure winnut properly but I' struggling to make it work. I want
my QNAP NAS TS-231 to work as a master and send signal to the PC to shut it
down during power outage. I configured QNAP properly (like this:
http://geekbeat.tv/qnap-adding-external-devices-qnap), but I don't know
what to do next.

accented characters in filenames mangled when rsyncing to a samba share
Hi folks,
I am having a problem rsyncing files with accents in the names. I've
seen similar problems reported a few times before in the archives but
they didn't seem to be referring to exactly the same problem as what I
have, and I'm not good enough at Linux to solve my problem by
generalising from the information there: sorry.
Anyway, my specific details are this. I am running rsync

Running dovecot on embedded device?
Hi,
I'm considering buying a QNAP TS-212 NAS and I wonder if this device is powerful
enough to run dovecot too (there is a pre-built dovecot package available from
QNAP)? The main goal would be that my mail is stored centralized on the NAS,
where I can access it from multiple systems without ending up with mail
scattered over each system (which is exactly what is happening now due to the

Services not starting in 2.1 (or 2.2)
I'm trying to install Dovecot onto my QNAP NAS. I apologise for this! It
means I'm not working in a normal environment, and don't (necessarily)
have the normal range of tools available (or the most up to date version
of those tools).
It seems that 2.0.21 works (at least, as far as I've tested), but 2.1.17
and 2.2.4 won't start up their child services.
I've got the

Proposal: Option to escape/quote individual COMMAND arguments
Hello!
IIUC, when I run,
$ ssh host cmd arg arg arg
the COMMAND (cmd arg...) will be joined locally to a single string
like this,
"cmd arg arg arg"
and then parsed by the shell on the other end. This needs to be taken
into account when running commands whose arguments contain spaces.
So this won't work:
$ ssh host python3 -c "print(1 + 1)"
bash: -c: line 1: syntax

nut proxy setup?
I've searched for quite some time and read the FAQ, but to no avail.
I have a UPS connected to a NAS. Unfortunately I have to specify every single
client IP (ups slave), because the stupid NAS system (QNAP) does not allow me
to set a /16 or /24. Changing the config files manually does not work either,
because the service won't come up anymore. (One has to love QNAP at this point.)
Thus I

win 7 client can't map drive: getpeername failed
Hi,
this is my first foray in samba (and newsgroups) so go easy :)
I'm trying to map a network drive from a windows 7 pro client to a QNAP NAS:
net use s: \\qnap\share
I've posted on several forums and got good advice but the problem remains.
Rather than repost all the detail, please see my original posts:

Error on installation of Ruby On Rails on QNAP TS809U-RP [Linux]
I am not sure where I should even begin troubleshooting this. I know a
little bit about Linux and am comfortable editing files and running
commands however definitely not a Linux guru. I have ipkg already installed
on the QNAP. I know absolutely nothing about ruby on rails. Thanks for any
help.
For those that are not familiar with a QNAP, ipkg is the same as apt-get or

FYI: Notes on setting up KVM guests using iSCSI
DV suggested that we document some libvirt setups using shared storage. I'm
not a fan of NFS, so I wrote some blog posts on how to use iSCSI in the
context of libvirt + KVM.
There is of course more than one way todo things, so I've outlined a couple
of different options. One completely manual command line approach using
tgtadm on the iSCSI server:

retrieve drive letter of USB Media.
Does SYSLINUX have any idea which DOS driveletter would be assigned to the disk it is booting from?
At www.veder.com someone is trying to build a USB flash drive.
However, FreeDOS does not seem to boot correctly from it
(bootsector trouble maybe, or kernel itself is confusing drives),
thus we're thinking of using Syslinux + Memdisk + bootimage,
but somehow we want to be able to also access the

How to delete retrieved mail
Hi All,
I use Dovecot and XMail on a QNAP TS-509 NAS. QNAP has combined the two into a
package they call XDove. Everything seems to be working great except for one
thing. When Dovecot retrieves the mail from XMail it is not removing it from
XMail. It is leaving a copy on XMail. Is there an option I can set in Dovecot so
it will delete the mail message from XMail when it retrieves it.

streams_xattr & streams_depot
A couple of questions about the above:
1. In their respective man pages, both refer to "NTFS alternate data streams?, however they are not limited to just NTFS ADS are they? Other file systems may also use ADS (such as Mac OS?s various fs)
2. What is the essential differences and similarities between the two? From the man pages it appears that:
- xattr has default prefix (which can be

Errors compiling tinc 1.0.12 on QNAP NAS (x86)
Hello,
first of all - thanks for creating tinc! It has become an invaluable
tool for me to securely join a multitude of servers and clients through
a VPN.
Today, I was trying to compile Tinc 1.0.12 on my newly purchased x86
Linux-based QNAP TS-239 Pro NAS device (Kernel 2.6.30.6).
The configure-script finishes without error (see attached config.log).
However, configure.status fails with

Rsyncing huge file, timeout on rsyncd
Hello,
let me describe my setup.
Source server is debian wheezy, rsync 3.0.9
Destination is qnap TS-410, with rsyncd enabled, rsync 3.0.7
I'm trying to rsync two files, which are exported from source server as iscsi
targets (windows iscsi backups). Files are on btrfs, so I use snapshots during
rsync, so files don't change.
One file is 50GB, second is 550GB in size.

[OT] Network Attached Storage
Hello,
Been thinking about either purchasing one of these or building my own.
This will be for home use.
I was looking at the QNAP 451+ or building (DYI NAS) one with FreeNAS. I
also found that CentOS has a NAS project.
Not sure which way to go. They would cost about the same. One would be
proprietary and the other open source. I like open source.
This for home use. Thought I'd start out
