OT: Gigabit Rated Eth Cables - Cat 6 v. Gigatrue
Hi,
In populating our racks with several gigbit switches
over the next few days, i'm wondering this:
Is it over-engineering to seek out 550mhz rated cables
over the typical Cat 6 250mhz rated cables?
I've been advised (if you can a salesperson's words
advice, heh.) that 250mhz is enough to handle traffic
up to 10GB's.
Should I just be happy with Cat6 for my GB switches or

PGP On Centos
Hey I need to run some pgp commands, -what's the name of the package
supported by Centos that will allow me to work with pgp?
I need to run pgp --fingerprint key.name
or it's equivalent.
Pro question. Google searches didn't show much, tried to search for
pgp, gnupg, openpgp, pgp on centos, openpgp on centos, centos/pgp. No
worthy results came back.
Any advice?

net.ipv4 TCP/IP Optimizations = sysctl.conf?
If I execute these via command line, will they persist after a reboot?
Or, should I be putting these into a file like /etc/sysctl.conf?

Centos 4.3: VPN recommend/ howto anyone?
Hi,
I'm just curious about setting up a new VPN here in the office part of our
enterprise, as well as a second in our 75+ node data center co-location
facility.
Needing to stomp out the ****dows L2TP node here, just too many
side-issues with config.
I'd like it to run the same OS as all of our servers, e.g. Centos 4.3.
Any recommedations on which software/server/client

OT: Measure 2U Server Amp Usage
Hi,
Running a bunch of CentOS servers on 2U supermicro equipment, usually with
8 drives on Adaptec SmartRAID V or LSI Megaraid.
In designing a rack in a data center, the question arises as to how to
measure the amperage the server uses, prior to investing in power drops
that actually do that for you, even remotely, for about $260.00-300USD per
unit. This number is the important one these days

Vsftpd/Centos Issue: Client Time Display Wrong
Hi,
We have patched Centos 4.4 to work properly with the recent DST changes,
but our customers are reporting wrong FTP client timestamps based on
which areas they live in.
What are the two main mechanisms in Centos that control time? I know
about /etc/localtime and TZDATA, is there something we may have missed?
Or is this perhaps a VSFTPd thing and I could go bug that list?
To be clear,

kickstart - how do I specify I20_block driver
Hi,
I have alot of kickstart and scripting going on as I provision lots of
machines, and every now and then I run into a pesky machine or three
that's still got that Adeptec zero-channel RAID card sitting on the
board. Normally I like to rip it our and throw something more robust
in, but if it's a cache machine or whatever, I leave it in.
It makes my kickstart file useless until I

Time Change: Centos-immune?
hey all,
I perused my inbox looking for this subject, but not finding it,
-anything I need to keep my server farm of 60 centos servers (that all
run ntp) going smoothly during this next time change on March 11?
I noticed on the w2k side my IT staff have to do some scrambling, heh,
but that's expected.
Any action required?

Slightly OT: DNS -force client always use authoritative
Is there a specific way to set a name server so that clients are always
*forced* to use an autoritative name server?
UltraDNS and some others have mentioned little features they have, but
it only hints at the possibility that somewhere in the DNS spec.

X Error: Nvidia Onboard - Supermicro
Howdy all,
Any recommendation as to the right way to config X. Last time I did was
using X86Setup back in OpenBSD 2.7 days.
What's the Xorg tool? How do I invoke it? Looks like I just need to
fix the ranges, maybe they mean sync vert & horiz or something.
Or should I be typing gdm instead of startx?
Any advice? -below are some errors, infos, although the dmesg didn't

Best Board Your Ever Ran CentOS On?
Hi,
Whats' the best motherboard you ever ran CentOS on?
---------
Don't read this unless you have lots o' spare time, and please, no
flamers or kook-jobs with wierd attitudes, this is just plain old
hardware as it relates to centos talk -no politic or mean folks.
Background (why I ask about centos-friendly hardware):
As I order alot of servers, I have alot of vendors telling me

4.4/64-bit Supermicro/ Nvidia Sata RAID Driver
Hi,
I am installing Centos ServerCD 4.4 64-bit on a new Supermicro board,
the RAID BIOS looks fine, RAID 5, all 4 Seagate ES 250 GB drives show up
as a single array in the RAID BIOS tool, and the OS install phase
completes without a hitch.
One thing I noticed was that the OS was loading the sata_nv driver and
picking up the 4 Sata drives instead of the large RAID5 volume, it
should just

AMD 64 - I20/ I20_blocks
I'm trying to install either 32-bit or 64 bit centos 4.3 and I keep
getting an error:
"No valid devices were found on which to install filesystems".
In checking BIOS and RAID, everything seems fine, but I just found some
research about I20.
An alternative would be the i2o_blocks module.
How can I install CentOS 4.3 x86_64 using i2o_blocks? How do I instruct

Centos-specific Denyhosts Howto Anyone?
Hi, after reading the docs (no man page) and seeing a few example
howtos, I see none for Centos specifically.
I hereby offer to write this and even host it, and any other wiki-able
howto you want, if you can school me on the first few steps relevant to
how to link up the current rpmforge rpm for RHEL4-64. See, right now,
the one for centos loads into the /usr/share/doc, which is an odd place

Installing X on a Minimal Build
hey, any way I can install X onto the 'minimal build' via yum?
I'd just reinstall, but am working with a 2TB system and it would take
hours to re-do. Just curious...

building cobbler on centos
Is it difficult to build cobbler on Centos or should I just go with
Fedora on this one?
Basically, if you have experience succeeeding at this, can you drop me a
link to a Howto or describe the issues?
I am only writing this because I tried, and ran into quite a few
dependency issues with upstream/downstream packages, and would rather
concentrate on just getting a nice working Cobbler (and

Vsftpd & Iscsi - fast enough
To extend space on our 64-bit centos FTP servers, we are considering
setting them up to work with an existing PromiseRAID system via iscsi.
-just curious if anyone here knows if iScsi is fast enough to serve up
all the images?
-might it be something where we get dedicated cards and put the iScsi
traffic on its own Vlan?
Just curious if this would hold up under alot of traffic, like weather
