Assistance with doveadm backup...
Ok, so for lack of any other information, am I to conclude that the doveadm backup command is broken in 2.0.9? I have been through the wiki for it back and forth and cannot make it work.
Yes, I need to upgrade, there is no question, but I won?t do that without a maildir backup. I would prefer to use the built-in dovecot mechanisms for that than something else.

Not really. The suggestions in the post seemed to be:
1. Tar the whole directory, which I have tried in the past, but a 130G directory takes over 18 hours to tar.
2. It was also suggested to rsync the directory, but the question was brought up, and not answered, about whether it was advisable to copy live mail, thus the need for doveadm sync/backup.
Based on what I?ve read about doveadm backup,

Here is my command:
[root at mail maelstrombackups] #mkdir -p vmailbackup
[root at mail vmail]# chown: vmail:vmail /mnt/maelstrombackups/vmailbackup
[root at mail vmail]# doveadm backup -u jeff maildir:/mnt/maelstrombackups/vmailbackup
Only gives me the usage list, doesn?t work.

Sorry for being such a newbie when it comes to scripting. Created a directory for the backups on the network mounted volume. Changed the appropriate path and am getting this:

In that scenario, what actually happens? Does mail get stored? Or rejected? Or delayed?

Okay then. Is there a document on how to do that in place? That was one of the reasons I was trying to do a backup first.

Clamping down on mailbox sizes...
I don?t want to do this for all users?.but?
I have a few users who insist that they use their mailboxes regularly and don?t want it cancelled. Fine. But they won?t clean them out either.
What steps would you all recommend for setting quotas on some users but not others?
Specifically starting out with identifying WHICH accounts have excessive amounts of crap in them, by age, then sending them

Re: Panic…
Shouldn't an event of this type trigger a useful warning instead of a cryptic programming error?

I'd say the correct term is not broken but missing. backup was implemented in later version.

With maildir keeping a copy of the content is sufficient backup.

Okay, apparently I?m just a complete idiot. Why doesn?t this work?
doveadm -Dv backup -u user Maildir:/mnt/maelstrombackups/vmailbackup
With user being the actual user name.
No backup is created, it just shows me the usage text.

Authentication per Service
Hi All,
I use dovecot (v2.3.4) with a SQL backend for user authentication,
passwords are
stored in CRAMMD5 format.
My SMTP server uses "doveadm auth" via auth-socket to perform sender
authentification. To shut down SMTP access for hacked passwords I want
to have a dedicated flag in the user database to allow/disallow SMTP for
a user withouth disabling his account for IMAP.
So, is

I see you haven?t received an answer. Sorry people here don?t seem to have time or inclination to answer basic questions. I?ve tried. You?re better to search elsewhere.

External Program for Authentication?
Is it possible to run a bash script for authentication where a 0 exit
code indicates success and a non-zero is failure? What I'm trying to do
is create a shadow IMAP server that authenticates against a different
server. That way my server will use the same passwords as an existing
server.
So what I would need is for dovecot to pass the username and password to
my script, I attempt to log

SV: SV: Looking for a guide to collect all e-mail from the ISP mail server
Actually the reverse pointer doesn't have to match. In fact this is impossible if you are setting up virtual accounts on one server for different domains. You just need to have a reverse pointer.
Most email servers look to seen if the reverse pointer has a "dyn" in it and blocks those.

or, since you already use doveadm, tell dovecot to index your mailbox
manually before your 'doveadm status' command:
doveadm -v index -q -u local-it-support INBOX
