Stopping login via "nologin" parameter
Hello,
I have a basic e-mail server with Postfix 3.1 and Dovecot 2.2.22.
I am using a passwd-file for both userdb and passdb:
/etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf
userdb {
driver = passwd-file
args = /etc/dovecot/passwd
}
passdb {
driver = passwd-file
args = /etc/dovecot/passwd
}
}
In the passwd file, I want to have

[RFE] A way to encode passwords in the /etc/imap.passwd file
Hello,
Is this the proper place to suggest an enhancement for the stock dovecot
package ?
The enhancement would be the following:
For the time being, the dovecotpw utility offers a standardised way to
interactively encode a user password in a certain scheme, say:
dovecotpw -s CRYPT
Enter new passord:
Re-enter new password:
etc.
Given a *valid* /etc/imap.passwd file (passwd-file

Question about the password field in a postgresql database
Hi List,
When I try to set the default_pass_scheme in dovecot-pgsql.conf to CRYPT,
the dovecot does not recognize my crypted passwords. If I prepend my
encrypted passwords with {CRYPT}, dovecot DOES recognize it. (even when I
set default_pass_scheme to PLAIN).
Is this supposed to work, or am I misinterpreting things here?
Thank you!
Maikel Verheijen.

Problem logging in during testing
Instructions at http://wiki2.dovecot.org/BasicConfiguration say the
next thing to test after getting IMAP and Telnet working is to create
a dummy user file with the following command:
echo "$USER:{PLAIN}password:$UID:$GID::$HOME" > users
And place it in /etc/dovecot and protect it appropriately. It was also
edited to change the plain-text password from `password' to what it

support for Blowfish $2y$10$
Hello,
does dovecot support bcrypt $2y$ version? (BLF-CRYPT - Blowfish crypt)
doveadm pw -s BLF-CRYPT
generates a
{BLF-CRYPT}$2a$05$.......
password.
Does this mean that dovecote will not authenticate against a
$2y$10$.......
password?
Thanks in advance,

Hi Aki,
Thank you for your reply.
I have two questions regarding this:
1. Is the ?nopassword? attribute the same as specifying a null password

Why does dovecot require the {} password sheme even if there is a $ crypt scheme.
The wiki[1] says:
If all the passwords are in same format, you can use default_pass_scheme to specify it. Otherwise each password needs to be prefixed with "{password-scheme}", for example "{plain}plaintext-password".
Why doesn't dovecot recognize the crypt scheme identifier ($1$ for MD5-CRYPT, $6$ for SHA512-CRYPT etc.)? At the moment I have to have the following in my db

Hi Timo,
I just (double) checked my config files, and it LOOKS ok.
My dovecot is from cvs, updated yesterday, and running on Redhat 7.3 (if
that matters).
Here is my dovecot-pgsql.conf:

passwd file for quota
Yes and No.
It's confusing to me which is why I ask.
Per my initial email my password source is PAM.
It's the userdb I'm concerned about ... which dovecot is using /etc/passwd.
So dovecot is getting user information from passwd file; password
information from PAM.
I need to add extra fields for qouta but can't add them to /etc/passwd
so I have to create a passwd with the extra

How to set up a passwd file for virtual hosting
Hi,
Exim4 is running fine and I am trying to set up Dovecot 0.99 to handle
virtual users (http://wiki.dovecot.org/moin.cgi/VirtualhostingWithExim)
so I don't have to set up user accounts for each e-mail address I want
to server out via pop3.
I need to create a user and passd file, a bit like /etc/passwd, but in a
different location for my dovecot virtual users. I can create a blank
file

Specifying passwd-file with virtual domains?
I'm trying to use virtual domains and I'm suffering a disconnect.
I have two domains - foo.com and bar.com. On the filesystem, they are
located at /var/mail/foo.com/ and /var/mail/bar.com/. Users are
located at /var/mail/foo.com/john/, /var/mail/bar.com/jane/, etc.
There are two password files with <user>:<scheme><password> entries.
The scheme is {PLAIN}. They are

Generating password string in /var/nis/passwd with Perl
Hello,
in our network we have AD (Win 2003) for user authentication
under Windows and NIS (CentOS 5.2) for same under Linux:
# rpm -qf /var/yp
filesystem-2.4.0-1.el5.centos
ypbind-1.19-8.el5
yp-tools-2.9-0.1
ypserv-2.19-3
I have written a CGI Script to add new users both to AD and
NIS and also to create the home dirs at our NetApp-Filer.
Unfortunately some steps still have to be made by hand

how authentication works?
Manao ahoana, Hello, Bonjour,
I've read:
http://wiki.dovecot.org/Authentication/PasswordSchemes
I have a users database with clear plain passwords.
Dovecot authenticates users without problems against it.
Now, it's time to move to CRYPT scheme.
Before that, I would like to know how things happen.
He have:
- the user, (entering his password in the MUA)
- the user's MUA (Thunderbird,
