Controlling dovecot caching decisions
Hello,
It looks like the "mail_always_cache_fields" and "mail_never_cache_fields"
can be used to control dovecot's caching decisions. I cannot seem to find
any documentation regarding how these fields should be used.
What are acceptable values for these fields? I am quite new to this so any
help would be much appreciated.
Regards,
Siva

fast doveadm search results
hello,
I've posted same question here months ago.
But obtaine no answer, even not a "you question is stupid".
So I don't know what to think about that.
My goal is to be able to find mails quickly with "doveadm search".
We are using dovecot in a corporate. And some managers, sometimes ask to delete some messages.
These messages are "unwanted" ones: mistakenly

What information you are search for? Message-ID, subject, body text?
If your data is in the headers, check out:
doveconf -a|grep -i cache
mail_always_cache_fields =
mail_cache_fields = flags
mail_cache_min_mail_count = 0

speed up doveadm search
Hello, I have recently migrated our mail accounts from old setup with courier-imapd to Dovecot 2.
I thought that I can search quicky messages in mailboxes with doveadm because of indexes.
Our users are asking (sometimes) to remove messages that they have sent wrongly. Some of them are coming from Exchange, and there is a feature in Outlook to recall (to delete) a message.
So basically, they

using dsync to convert mailboxes looses caching options
Hi there,
We're trying to convert users from Maildir to sdbox at present; I'm
using dsync to achieve this (2.0.16) however when the user's have been
converted we only get minimal information in the caching files. Is there
some way to preserve all the caching decisions that were previously made
so that when the user logs in to the new mailbox we don't have to cause

Ordering mailboxes
I have a really weird problem. To whit:
I compiled dovecot 0.99.10 on two different systems: a linux-ppc box running
Debian, and a Mac OS X Server v. 10.2.8. It compiled fine on both.
The same Maildir's are being served up on both -- the OS X server exports
home directories to the clients via NFS.
BUT the OS X box orders mailboxes this way:
INBOX
Deleted Items
Sent Items

Dovecot/IMP Bug with RFC822.SIZE and BODYSTRUCTURE
Ok, I have narrowed my IMP/Dovecot attachment problem down to what I
think is a bug in Dovecot. The test that follow are performed on
0.99.11.
When you download an attachment in IMP it uses the php function
imap_fetchbody() which contacts the IMAP server and retrieves just the
mime chunk you are looking for.
It does this by first fetching some information about the email, and
then grabs the

mbox fixes mostly. Began some other things, but none of them actually
work yet:
- Use X-UIDL header in mboxes for POP3 UIDL list
- Cache file compression
- Some cleverness for cache file for figuring out what to cache
Well, I might as well explain the last one now.
Users can be divided to three groups:
1. Most users will use only a single IMAP client which caches

Mail always is delivered to /var/mail/
Hey,
I am setting up Dovecot on Debian with Postfix. I am telling Dovecot
to use maildir:~/Maildir but it persists in dumping mail in mbox format
in /var/mail/username. Can anyone suggest ideas? My config file is
attached.
Thanks
Kevin

RFC 3501 violation in FETCH BODY responses
Hi there,
Quoting RFC 3501 sec. 7.4.2 ?FETCH Response? (data item BODYSTRUCTURE):
?A body type of type MESSAGE and subtype RFC822 contains,
immediately after the basic fields, the envelope structure, body
structure, and size in text lines of the encapsulated message.?
According the ABNF (RFC 3501 sec. 9) the envelope structure is that of
the ENVELOPE FETCH data item, and the

[PATCH] lib-imap: imap-bodystructure: add test with empty header field
This causes the body structure to be incorrect. The RFC says it's fine o
have empty header field values.

This just adds a failing test, inspired from an e-mail spotted in the
wild. Ideas welcome to fix it.

i HAVE practically searched in ALL messages from 2004

Cache fields
Hi,
We are using Dovecot with maildir, and the mail client requests flags, internaldate, and uid for all messages on folder open, which on average takes 3 seconds, but for large folders is much longer.
It seems like I want mail_cache_fields to include "flags", but which date corresponds to internaldate? date.received?
Is UID always cached for messages, or does it have to read through

Problem with BODYSTRUCTURE (wrong charset)
Hi,
I've changed a program that fetches mail via IMAP from an Exchange Server to use our Dovecot machine.
But now I'm experiencing strange problems with seem to be caused by a wrong BODYSTRUCTURE answer that causes wrong charset handling. When fetchting the BODYSTRUCTURE I see this:
Dovecot:
88 UID fetch 32 (BODYSTRUCTURE)
* 1 FETCH (UID 32 BODYSTRUCTURE ("text"

Dovecot startup at boottime fails
Hi,
I am running dovecot 0.99.10.4 on SuSE 9. I installed it using apt-get from
the gwdg repository.
The dovecot service is configured to start at boottime in run level 3 and 5.
However, it dies immediately with this error (/var/log/mail.err):
dovecot: Login process died too early - shutting down
Starting the service afterwords from a prompt as root with the command:

Hi,
I just update from 0.99 to 1.alpha4. I combined with squirrel since
several years ago and all was like a charm. Now dovecot is like catching
mails. I explain:
- I sent an email to my account. I login to webmail and I could see
the mail.
- Then, I check my mail with an email client through pop3 (vpopmail).
- After that the mail isn?t in the server, but in the webmail appears
