Dovecot 2.2.27 proxy - enforcing per client IP connection limits
Quick follow-up: updated the proxies to 2.2.28, but I still couldn't
find a way to limit the inbound IMAP connections per IP & username. I
know "mail_max_userip_connections" limit works for the mail stores, but
it doesn't seem to have any effect on the proxies. I'm using a mix of
Dovecot & Courier-IMAP servers as backends.
Basically I need to find a way to enforce

I thought this might be the case. Is there any solution to enforce this
on the proxy? If not, will a feature request be considered anytime soon?
I see the proxies as the first line of defense against IMAP "abuse" and
I think it's consistent having the same configurable option available on
both backends and the proxies.

Dovecot 2.2.27 proxy - enforcing per client IP connection limits
Hi,
Trying to keep abusive/buggy IMAP clients at bay on a number of Dovecot
proxy servers, I've reconfigured them to use
"mail_max_userip_connections = 50" in the "protocol imap" section,
followed by restarting Dovecot. Yet, I'm still seeing 160+ established
connections from a single IP address for the same email account. Am I
missing anything?

Hi,
mail_max_userip_connections is only enforced at the backend level. The setting has no effect on proxy. If you want to force the limit then you can only do it in the backend.

I frequently see this from my iPhone/iPad IMAP users:

enforcing multiple per-mailbox quotas for shared mailboxes
Hi!
I'm trying to get quotas for shared mailboxes set up on my server. It's
not working, and I fail to understand why. Documentation for setup of
this complexity is rather scarce on the web, and the discussions I found
either don't directly apply or terminate with "I got it working" but
no explanation.
Can someone please help?

I have now set mail_max_userip_connections to 400 in 20-imap.conf to see
if it makes any difference.
Late yesterday the customer tested from his office, an older IOS 9
tablet and he had IMAP working in a matter of minutes, so is certainly
an newer software version by Apple issue.

if anyone has come up with a workaround/fix for this problem that iOS
Mail.app clients (10.3.3, 11.0.3, 11.1?) continue to exhibit?

I?m thinking of getting Solr working with my Dovecot server. Server is new 6-core Mac Mini, mail store of over 1/2 TB. Mailboxes with 100s of thousands of messages.
But I?m not sure if:
a) it will make enough of a difference and
b) does Mail.app and other mail clients on Macs or iOS devices perform searches on their local copy of mail or does it just send a search request to the server?

[bug] Auth cache, proxy and ITERINDEX

today we have exceprienced really major difficulties with our proxy
backend servers. Everything started after enabling auth cache:
auth_cache_size = 100M
auth_cache_verify_password_with_worker = yes
auth_cache_ttl = 1 hour
auth_cache_negative_ttl = 1 hour
Soon after we start receiving lots of calls from our customers about
'missing all e-mail messages'. This was in errors logs on

macOS Notes.app IMAP Syncing Not Working
I?m requesting help getting macOS?s Notes.app to sync notes with a new dovecot IMAP server.
Thanks to dovecot?s excellent online documentation and help from this list, I have a new perfectly functioning IMAP server.
The issue is that macOS Note.app does not sync with this server. However, iOS Notes.app *does* sync and work well with this IMAP server, and the differences between macOS and iOS

It's not behind a proxy (unless the router is acting as a proxy?). Could
it be that my router is doing some Hairpin NAT tomfoolery? The router is
generic, so I run into that from time to time with my webserver.
I tried doveadm who, but didn't see anything too peculiar. There is the
expect half dozen or so users on common IPs.

I have been haunted by the following error message or months, that we
see using Thunderbird.
Unable to connect to your IMAP server.
You may have exceeded the maximum number of connections to this server.
If so, use the Advanced IMAP Server Settings dialogue to reduce the
number of cached connections.
If I change my location, via a VPN, the error message goes away and I
can connect.
