[patch] kbuild: build all targets in gzip
The gzip program had a few aliases - using ln to reach them.
Build these.
Also introduce gzip.stripped since it was present in the original
Makefile.
To support this a few new rules was added to scripts/Kbuild.klibc

Backing up dovecot mailboxes
Does anyone have a working solution as to how I can use "doveadm
backup" to back up a virtual users mailbox to a removable USB device.
I keep receiving numerous errors and no files are backed up although
the directories are created.

Zipping Rdata Files
Saving Rdata files in a zip archive form can in some cases save a
considerable amount of disk space. R has the zip.file.extract function to
extract files from zip archives, but appears not to have any corresponding
function to save in zipped form. (At least I have not been able to find
anything in the help files or through searching the mail archives.) The
system function can be used to call gzip

hotuser and hotkernel
G''Day Folks,
While I have a few minutes online (which is rare at the moment - travel),
let me post about a couple of new scripts. I''ve just uploaded them to
http://www.brendangregg.com/dtrace.html.
They are to profile user-level functions and libaries; and kernel-level
functions and modules. They sample, rather than trace (which can be both
good and bad). Here is hotuser

[PATCH] better kbuild integration
Following patch improves integration with kbuild.
With a future kernel (2.6.14-rc) it now has working support
for 'make clean'.
Included is an example of how to compile an early userspace program.
I selected gzip as the most simple one for this - and left out all
the links to different names (gunzip etc.)
Before proceeding with this I need some inputs on what functionality

libxc: Question on kernel image unzipping
Hi,
libxc contains the following function which is used when uncompressing

install or uncompress package build in one platform in another platform
Hi,
Is an R package built under Unix (package.tar.gz) could be installed on other platforms like windows or Mac? The compressed tar file (.tar.gz) built under Unix doesn't seem to be uncompressed under windows (unzip under windows instead of gunzip). How to proceed?
Look forward to your reply,
Carol

Can't unzip package
I just upgraded to Solaris 8, and downloaded the the following binary
package from www.samba.org <http://www.samba.org> :
samba-2.2.7-sol8-suncc-64bit.pkg.gz
When trying to gunzip it, here is my output:
/home/ccampbell # gunzip samba-2.2.7-sol8-suncc-64bit.pkg.gz
gunzip: samba-2.2.7-sol8-suncc-64bit.pkg.gz: not in gzip format

Backing up and Importing IMAP folders
I am running Dovecot with Postfix on a FreeBSD machine. There are
problems with the drive and I cannot depend on it. Dovecot saves all
mail in IMAP format. I want to back up the mail folders, install a new
HD, install the latest FreeBSD OS and then reinstall my programs.
Reinstalling Dovecot is simple, but how do I reinstall the IMAP
folders? Can Dovecot backup the folders onto a CD and then

Installing R and modules on Unix OS
Hi:
I have a question about installing R (and modules) on a Unix system (AIX).
Can I just gunzip (or the equivalent) the installation files into my home directory or will I need someone with root access to install R? I am hoping that the answer is the former (I can unzip all files to a directory R that I create under my home directory and I can start using it).
Could you please help me with this

Backing up and restoring maildir folders
Hello,
I am migrating to a different distribution of Linux that involves
changing to an earlier version of dovecot (2.2.22 to 2.2.13). As part of
this process, I will be copying several maildirs to the new machine. One
of these has a number of files and directories that resemble this one
example:
cur/
dovecot.index
dovecot.index.cache
dovecot.index.log
dovecot.mailbox.log
dovecot-uidlist

backing up and restoring a samba configuration
Hi,
I'm trying to backup my samba configuration, including the users. I'm
making copies of these files:
/etc/samba/smb.conf
/etc/samba/smbpasswd
/etc/samba/smbusers
When I install samba on a new machine (I've recreated the directory
structure and Linux users) and replace the above files, users can't log
on to their shares. Am I missing a file? I thought the

Restoring mailboxes from backup duplicates messages in POP clients
Hello
I had a disk problem and had to reformat it. All mailboxes were backed
up using rsync.
After I restored the mailboxes, the POP clients (Thunderbird) that were
configured to leave the messages on the mailserver for, let's say, 30
days, didn't understand that some messages were already transfered and
the users got duplicated messages in their Inbox.
How can we avoid this?

installing samba
Hi,
I just downloaded the latest version of Samba in the form of samba-latest.tar.gz
Managed to unzip it with gunzip but cannot figure out how to install it. Tried rpm but didn't work.
I have an earlier version of Samba (2.0.6) on my SuSE 6.4 machine already.
Can I just install the new version or do I need to do some sort of uninstall of the previous version first.

Semi-OT: Backing up maildir
We switched our mail server over from mbox to maildir a few months ago and
couldn't be happier - the performance under normal load is incredible.
However we now have a problem with backup.. Typically we would run tar on
the mail server, sending its output to another server via ssh.. Like this:
tar cfp - /home | gzip | ssh other.server (cd /backups && tar xfp -).. I
have tried
