Fwd: [PATCH (geoip)] use IO.pread from the io-extra lib if possible
I sent this to the author of geoip a few days ago and haven''t heard back, yet. Since he may be on vacation or busy, somebody may also hit this problem in the mean time, I figured I''d post the patch + git repo I sent him here. Unicorn users: The pread(2)/pwrite(2) syscalls are very useful for making libraries like this one (that rely on an on-disk database) compatible with

[PATCH] python: Support buffer protocol for pread() result
pread() can return now any object supporting the buffer protocol[1] such as bytearray, bytes, or memoryview. [1] https://docs.python.org/3/c-api/buffer.html --- When the new python tests will be in master we can add some automated tests. For now I tested this manually using the example plugin as is and with these changes:  def pread(h, count, offset):      global disk     return

1.2.6 Spurious pread()/stream errors/index corruption
Hi, We're currently testing 1.2.x with a move from 1.1.x in mind however with the current 1.2 series we are encountering some serious problems. simply editing the main conf and restarting dovecot gives these errors seemingly randomly: (some previous posts indicated this might be todo with 64bit file offsets so we've played around with disable-largefile and setting _FILE_OFFSET_BITS

Question on how to get Samba to use larger pread/write calls.
We are testing Samba 3 (and 4) on Fedora Core 13, 10Gbit connection with a Mac OS 10.6.4 system as the client. We will be adding some Windows machines sooner or later with 10Gbit interfaces. We are seeing 100-150MBytes/sec read or write performance between the Mac and the FC13 system over 10Gbit interface but it should be capable of 400-500MBytes/sec. We have a local raid on the FC13 system

[PATCH nbdkit 1/2] python: For v2 API, avoid copy by passing a buffer to pread.
It's more efficient if we pass the C buffer directly to Python code. In some cases the Python code will be able to write directly into the C buffer using functions like file.readinto and socket.recv_into. This avoids an extra copy. performance problem with Samba built with pread/pwrite on HP-UX 1 1.11
Hi everyone, One of my teammates here at HP uncovered this, and I thought it deserved proactive mention on the list: It covers non-HP builds of Samba, so HP CIFS Server (HP's version of Samba bundled with all 11.0 and above OS'es) customers are not directly affected but those of you on the list who might build Samba yourselves on 11.11 could be affected. [PATCH nbdkit v2 1/2] ocaml: Change pread method to avoid leaking heap memory.
In the C part of the OCaml plugin we created a ‘bytes’ [byte array] and passed it to the OCaml pread method. The plugin is supposed to overwrite the array with the returned data. However if (eg. because of a bug) the plugin does not fill the array then whatever was in the OCaml or possibly even the C heap before the allocation is returned to the client, possibly resulting in a leak of sensitive

[PATCH nbdkit v2 2/2] server: Use a thread-local pread/pwrite buffer to avoid leaking heap data.
If the plugin .pread method did not fill the buffer with data then the contents of the heap could be leaked back to the client. To avoid this create a thread-local data buffer which is initialized to zero and expanded (with zeroes) as required. This buffer is shared between pread and pwrite which makes the code a little bit simpler. Also this may improve locality by reusing the same memory for

[libnbd PATCH v2 5/5] states: Add DF flag support for pread
When structured replies are negotiated, the server may advertise support for the DF flag (the server promises to return at most one data/hole chunk, or to fail with NBD_EOVERFLOW if the chunk would be too large). As both nbdkit and qemu-nbd support this flag (the former only trivially, but the latter by not compressing holes over the wire), it is worth exposing to clients, if only for testing

HP-UX 11.00 samba 2.2.* smbd SIGSYS in pread
configure determines that my HP-UX 11.00 box has pread (and pwrite) because the linker resolves them to symbols in my libc. however, i don't believe that this system call is implemented in my version of the kernel because smbd dies with a SIGSYS (bad arg to sys call) in libc:pread. my workaround was to override what configure automatically determines ac_cv_func_pread=no \
