Filtering spam in an offlineimap + dovecot setup
Hello,
To easily access my mail both offline on my computer and on my phone, I
am synchronizing a local copy on my computer using offlineimap. As the
spam filtering options provided on the server are not sufficient, I am
now looking into client-side spam filtering.
My current setup is as follows. Mail is synchronized using offlineimap,
and delivered to a local dovecot server:

Dovecot LDA, Offlineimap and Sieve
Hi,
I am trying to st up Offlineimap to use Dovecots LDA to be able to use
Sieve for mail filtering, but am not sure how to get this working. I
think the right way would be to use 'preauthtunnel' in .offlineimaprc
and try the setup below, which doesn't work.
,----.offlineimaprc
| [Repository LocalRepository]
| type = IMAP
| preauthtunnel = ssh -q localhost

Gnus and dovecot time out
Could someone suggest what the solution here is? Dovecot is terminating
the connection to Gnus after a certain period of activity. It's my own
mail server so no need to worry about "hogging resources". Should/could
Dovecot be configured to keep the connection alive, or should Gnus be
programmed to automatically reopen the conneection? The current problem
that one can not leave an

offlineimap with dovecot and sieve
I have a dumb question, is it possible to use this combination:
Synchronising a remote IMAP-server and a local dovecot-IMAP-server by
offlineimap (with both types = IMAP), which works very well.
But it seems, that my sieve-scripts on the local dovecot server are not
recognised by this combination.
Is there a good debugging way for this?

Support of client specific flags?
Gnus use a lot of custom flags to represent the messages state
wrt. Gnus.
How well are these flags supported in dovecot? How fast are access to
them? (Ie. will dovecot have to open the message and parse the headers)
Are they supported when using imapsync to transfer messages from a
different IMAP server? (I guess I'll find out soon, because I'm using
imapsync to transfer messages

needing UNSELECT to notice new mail?

Basically everything works fine except that in gnus typing 'g' in the

number of new messages, fails to notice new

Ask about IMAP UID
Hi all,
I am new to dovecot. I am trying to use offlineimap + dovecot + gnus for
some emails on multiple machines.
I need to use org-mode capture links on emails.
I want to know if the same email will have the same IMAP UID on different
machines given that they are synced by offlineimap to a local maildir and
served by dovecot respectively.
Best,
Shiquan

Syncing several emails accounts with offlineimap and dovecot
Hi,
I have just installed dovecot and offlineimap on my laptop for syncing with my
gmail, and reading in gnus, as outlined in this article:
http://sachachua.com/wp/2008/05/08/geek-how-to-use-offlineimap-and-the-dovecot-mail-server-to-read-your-gmail-in-emacs-efficiently/
I am using Debian Etch, and I am the only user.
The only change I made to the default dovecot.conf file was to set:

gnus/dovecot open transactions panic
I have been using dovecot with gnus for a long time. Recently, I
started getting failures, and I think it's a dovecot problem triggered
by gnus being more aggressive, but I'd like to hear opinions about
whether I should pursue this as a gnus bug.
The log shows:
Oct 25 19:27:36 gdtserver dovecot: IMAP(gdt): Panic: Trying to close mailbox foo.bar with open transactions

dovecot and unison
I am successfully using dovecot purely as a personal local mail store on
my desktop. (There is only one account, and it's only ever accessed by
local mail clients on the machine. The point is to have a common store I
can use with any client; plus, I prefer dovecot's Mailbox storage to
Thunderbird's mboxes.)
Now I'd like if possible, to replicate this setup on my laptop and

How to troubleshoot LDA or LMTP?
Please forgive me if these are silly questions. I am a normal user, not
a system administrator. I am using Dovecot as a kind of IMAP caching
proxy, i.e. reading IMAP mail via Gnus + Dovecot + Offlineimap. I am
trying to enable sieve functionality.
*Desired behaviour* When Gnus (or whatever MUA) asks for new mail from
Dovecot, that before Dovecot returns and answer, the sieve rules are

Which email clients support SMTP/IMAP via STDIN&STDOUT of proxy command?

SSL problems on dovecot 2.1.7
When I upgraded my debian-based imap server from squeeze to wheezy
yesterday, SSL stopped working.
I am using a http://cacert.org signed server sertificate, and I am
reusing the certificates that were used on the 1.x dovecot of debian
squeeze.
My three MUAs that worked against the previous 1.x dovecot with the same
certificate, now fails in various ways.
Any hints and guesses as to how to debug

cyrus2courier or cyrus2maildir.py, which to choose?
What's the best utility to use to convert mail folders from a cyrus
2.2.13-10, on a debian 4.0 Etch system, to folders that can be used by
dovecot?
The http://wiki.dovecot.org/Migration/Cyrus page isn't too clear on
what's the difference.
cyrus2courier says "It should be able to preserve message UIDs, flags
and 26 first keywords."
cyrus2maildir.py says "preserves

bidirectional synchronization of dovecot-managed maildirs
Hello and happy holidays,
I've been thinking about high performance bidirectional synchronizing
the mail on my laptop (which is frequently disconnected) and my
workstation at work (which is always on and receives all inbound
mail). Both run dovecot on top of maildir.
I've been playing with offlineimap, unison (which I already use for
all my non-mail files), as well as the gnus agent (in

Moving from cyrus to dovecot (a story)
The transition was quick, and also (so far) seemingly painless.
The server is an old Pentium II 233 machine that sits between my home
LAN and the internet, and have sitting there, and running night and day
since 1999. For the first two years it was running SuSE linux, but
since 2001 it has been running debian and been continously upgraded. It
was originally installed with potato, but have been
