Replication - hostname issue
I have postfix/dovecot setup on a virtual gentoo server. It's been in service for almost two years without any issues.
Now I want to set up a spare server to replicate mails from the one running. I copied the vm files to the second host server, changed the ip, hostname and hosts file for the copy and followed the dovecot replication doc.
The last point in the doc tells to rundovecot

symlinking maildirs
I have some emails that I think are in the Postfix delivery queue
going to Dovecot, but didn't get mapped to their alias (because I
didn't have all the alias entries in when they were queued).
I'm wondering if this trick would work. I have the mail being
delivered to /home/mail/%Ld/%Ln/mail and am wondering if I could make
a symlink at /home/mail/example.com/foo -> bar and add a

Compact all maildirs with dovecot-1.0.9?
I'm running dovecot-1.0.9 on Gentoo Linux.
I recently observed a large increase in disk usage on this dedicated
mailserver. I attribute it to high spam traffic and/or large attachments
for legit email retained on the server.
How can I run a command equivalent to an IMAP client's 'Compact Folder'
on the entire tree of maildirs under each /home/(user)?
Thanks.

Shared maildirs
Hi,
This is the one thing holding me back from switching to Dovecot...
Can anyone give a realistic timeframe for when Shred maildirs will be
officially supported?
Thanks... other than that missing piece, Dovecot rocks!

OT: best way to move maildirs to another host ?
Hi,
I'm sorry because this mail is a little bit off-topic, but Timo's email
titled "1.0RC7 Released" made me think about a possible issue for me.
I have to move an old dovecot installation (1.0b2) from an i386 server
to a new x86_64 server running latest available dovecot.
My concern is about moving all my users' mail stored as maildir onto
this new server.
What would be

AFS maildirs & GSSAPI?
I saw some stuff about AFS maildirs awhile back, and dovecot seems happy
being running via ssh from offlineimap with :INDEX=/tmp/dovecot-%u, but
what I'd really like to know is has anyone got a functional dovecot
installation with AFS and GSSAPI sasl support that gets the correct
users's AFS tokens?
Thanks

Question about pre-indexing maildirs
I have a situation with many users and an existing mail delivery
agent. Seems like I once saw an imaptest program which I imagine
might be used to pre-index maildirs.
For example...
- remember which users and user maildirs have changed since
last pre-index
- when system quiet pre-index any maildirs which have had
mail delivered and no access by a mail client (using some

Bug handling zero-byte files in maildirs
I managed to get a bunch of zero-byte files in my maildirs today, and
Dovecot choked completely (at least for pop3 users); It wouldn't
download any messages at all, and the mailbox would often say "-ERR

.dotfiles in Maildirs appear in folderlisting - dovecot 2.0
Hi,
I've some dot-files in the Maildir/ folder. These files appear in the
Mailbox listing, but of course they can't be accessed. In the previous
dovecot versions these files were hidden.

Multiple Maildirs per Virtual User
How would it be possible to configure dovecot (2.0.16) in such a way
that it would serve several maildirs (e.g., INBOX, INBOX.Drafts,
INBOX.Sent, forum_email, [Gmail].Trash, etc.) per virtual user?
I am only able to specify a single maildir, but I want all maildirs in
/home/my-username/mail/account1/ to be served.
e.g., /etc/dovecot/passwd:

importing plain mboxes to dovecot maildirs
Is there way to import old plain mboxes via dsync? It complains about
lack of index files:

Empty file in maildirs
I am cleaning up some old users, and found that in every maildir folder there is
an empty file called maildirfolder, created at the time the original dovecot was
installed.
Is this empty file necessary for dovecot, or is it left there in an upgrade
proces and can it be removed?
Dovecot 2.1.7, on Debian wheezy.

slow incremental indexing of maildirs with squat
Hi!
I'm using Dovecot 2.1.7 on Debian Wheezy 32-bit (package version is
1:2.1.7-7+deb7u1) with maildirs.
My problem is that the incremental indexing of maildirs with squat takes
a very long time... I don't know if it reindexes anything, but it seems
it iterates though all messages on each search query and reads them. It
works fast only on successive queries within several minutes,

expiring mail from root's Maildirs?
I would like to delete old mail from root's sent mailbox but doveadm throws errors when I try to do this, not wanting to process root's mail at all (I am running the commands as root, naturally)

So dovecot cannot expire, reindex, clean, repair, etc root mail?
