R CMD INSTALL configure.args and CC customization
One way to deal with this is to install R itself with mpicc. Then all
packages are installed with mpicc and get the required MPI libraries and
includes by default. I have done this with R-2.13.0 on an Opteron
cluster running CentOS-5 a while ago and so far it has worked out great.
I crosspost to r-sig-hpc and welcome others to comment if there are
potential downsides to this solution.

Win2K3 ADS and Samba 3.0.1: Cannot access shares even with IP
Regarding the problem where you cannot view shares using the hostname
(netbios) of the server, but can if you use the IP address: I can view my
Samba shares from a Win2000 server using the IP, but I cannot access them.
Double-clicking on the shares in Windows Explorer results in the following
error:
'\\<ipaddr>\Share is not accessible. The network name cannot be found.'

constrOptim doesn´t send arguments to optim!(?)
Hi,
I think that there something wrong with the 'constrOptim' max/minimization
function because she doesn?t send extra arguments to 'optim' call.
Fact: When I use optim in a f(x,theta)-like function, everything goes ok.
But using constrOptim with the same function leads to error...
Proof: Make a small change in the 'Rosenbrock Banana function' (taken from

Disabling mouse tracking when X11 focus leaves wine?
Hello all,
I was very pleased to find that Age of Empires II works so well in wine.
Now, one hobby of mine is to create custom AI scripts for the game (see www.aiscripters.com for examples), and let different scripts (mine and other people's) play against each other, mostly unattended.
The problem is, that the running AoEII game still tracks the position of the mouse
pointer whenever I move

how to get colnames of a dataframe within a function called by 'apply'
Hello alltogether,
how is it possible to assign the colnames of a data.frame to a function
called by apply, e.g. for labeling a plot?
Example: I want to plot several qqnorm-plots side by side and there
should be a maintitle for each qqnorm-plot which is identical to the
respective colname.
I checked, but the column which is processed by the function called by
apply does not contain a colname

Fatal: USER environment missing
I have some trouble installing dovecot, and maybe someone can help me.
I have compiled dovecot on a Slackware Linux 9.0 running on a i586, and the
imap program works OK (I tested it using the method described in the error
reporting document). The make install procedure didn't create a correct
/etc/rc.d/rc.dovecot file. I have created a dovecot user and group manually.
Running just
