New CentOS/RHEL group on Facebook
Hi, There are currently two competing CentOS groups on Facebook. The "main" group is managed by a small group of autocrats with very unilateral communication skills. The other one is not managed at all, judged by the amount of non-CentOS-related stuff published there (Ubuntu tutorials, Windows games, cheap Ray-Ban sunglasses). I was a bit frustrated by this state of things, the more so

Docker swarm service misconfigured in FirewallD / CentOS 7
Hi, I'm currently fiddling with Docker Swarm on three sandbox servers running CentOS 7. Unfortunately I couldn't get even the most basic configuration running. After some experimenting and investigating, it turns out there's a problem with FirewallD. Here's what I did first on every single node. # firewall-cmd --permanent --add-service=docker-swarm # firewall-cmd --reload I

"WARNING: fdisk GPT support is currently new"
Hi, I'm currently teaching Linux system administration to a class at the local "chambre de commerce". The course is based mainly on a minimal CentOS 7 installation. Usually my preferred tool for handling manual GPT partitioning is gdisk, which is not installed on a minimal install. I just gave the good old fdisk a spin, which enables GPT partition table creation with the

Postfix vs. Thunderbird on Mac OS
Hi, I'm running our local school's mail server on CentOS 7, Postfix and Dovecot. We get quite a lot of spam, so I have the following sender restrictions in my /etc/postfix/main.cf: --8<------------------------------------------------------ # Restrictions SMTP smtpd_helo_restrictions = reject_unknown_helo_hostname smtpd_sender_restrictions = reject_unknown_sender_domain,

Dropbox on CentOS 6?
Hi, I just spent a couple of unnerving hours trying to make Dropbox work on CentOS 6.6. Is there a way that 1. Actually works? 2. Doesn't include jumping through burning loops? Replacement for NIS/NFS?
Hi, Over the last few years, I've been using a rather bone-headed solution to implement centralized authentication and roamin user profiles in Linux-based networks: a combination of NIS and NFS. I'm aware it's not ideal in terms of security, but it's been running in our local school since 2010, and it just works. The current setup is based on Slackware Linux on both server

Can't access Samba shares from Nautilus
Hi, I'm currently experimenting with Samba on a few sandbox machines. On the server side, I have setup CentOS 7 with a basic Samba setup and two shares, one public, the other password-protected. I have two Windows 7 boxes in my network, and I can access the shares perfectly, log in to the password-protected share, read and write files, so this seems to work OK. On my main Linux workstation

Markdown editor for CentOS 7?
Le 16/06/2017 ? 13:25, Yamaban a ?crit : > First, there are "preview" plugins for vim, you might want to look at > them first: > https://github.com/suan/vim-instant-markdown Hi, Thanks very much for your advice! This is a real life-changer for me. I had to fiddle a couple hours with Node.js and tweaking Vim until Markdown was handled correctly, but now I have a really nice

Reduce existing CentOS 7 installation to "Minimal install" - services?
Hi, When I install a CentOS server/desktop/workstation, I usually start from scratch with a barebone minimal installation, then add packages as needed. Some machines (like dedicated servers in a datacenter) come preconfigured by the hosting company, so I thought it wouldn't be a bad idea to start stripping that stuff first. Here's a little script I wrote, which essentially strips down

Docker container isolation not working in CentOS 7
Hi, I've decided to use these summer holidays to wrap my head around Docker and its quirks. Spent the last couple weeks working through a Udemy tutorial and a thick book about Docker, and I have Docker CE installed on two machines: * my workstation running OpenSUSE Leap 15.1 * a public sandbox server running CentOS 7 I'm currently fiddling with custom networks and container

Post-installation setup script for CentOS 7 servers
Hi, I just sanded down the remaining edges of my CentOS 7 post-install configuration script and published it on a Github repository, along with some detailed instructions. * https://github.com/kikinovak/centos-setup Feel free to use it (and/or adapt it to your needs). Markdown editor for CentOS 7?
Hi, I recently discovered Markdown, and I'm currently using it to write some documentation for CentOS 7. https://github.com/kikinovak/formation-linux For the time being, I'm using my good old Vim editor for writing it. I turned off syntax highlighting, since this produces random results with Markdown. Pages are correctly displayed on Github, but in order to see them, I have to push

SpamAssassin vs. SELinux
Hi, I just installed SpamAssassin on two servers running CentOS 7 and Postfix. One is my sandbox server for experimenting, the other one is the server that hosts my company's web site, blog, mail, etc. So far, SpamAssassin seems to work as expected. I sent a test mail, which was duly flagges as [SPAM], and I already see the odd incoming spam message correctly flagged as [SPAM]. For testing

From network-scripts to NetworkManager on a router : questions
Hi, I'm running CentOS 7 on all my servers, in three different contexts : 1. simple local server 2. public facing server 3. router/gateway/firewall I'm currently in the process of moving my KISS-style network-scripts-style configurations to something more orthodox based on NetworkManager. Scenarios (1) and (2) caused no problems, but (3) is giving me some headache. Let me

Custom desktop menu entries: weird behavior with menu categories
Hi, For my client's desktops, I'm usually customizing the various Linux desktops I'm installing. I'm using custom icon themes (Elementary), custom system fonts (Droid Sans), and one of the things I also customize are desktop menu entries. Here's an example of what I do on a Slackware+Xfce-based desktop, so you get the idea. Once all applications are installed, I run the

CentOS 7: software RAID 5 array with 4 disks and no spares?

Every disk is configured like this : * 200 MB /dev/sdX1 for /boot * 4 GB /dev/sdX2 for swap * 248 GB /dev/sdX3 for / There are supposed to be no spare devices. /boot and swap are all supposed to be assembled in RAID level 1 across

Squid and HTTPS interception on CentOS 7 ?
Hi, I've been running Squid successfully on CentOS 7 (and before that on 6 and 5), and it's always been running nicely. I've been using it mostly as a transparent proxy filter in school networks. So far, I've only been able to filter HTTP. Do any of you do transparent HTTPS filtering ? Any suggestions, advice, caveats, do's and don'ts ? Cheers from the snowy South of

CentOS 7 + GNOME : all icon themes broken after update from CR

CentOS 6 + nux-dextop: GIMP vs. GIMP 2.8 ?
Hi, I just setup a CentOS 6 desktop with the nux-dextop repository activated. When installing GIMP (yum install gimp), I get a gimp package as well as a gimp28 package. I understand this is the Nux-Dextop GIMP 2.8 package. Unfortunately this doesn't work so well with my system. It's not localized (menus appear in english, though the system is in French), the main GTK theme (Murrina
