Nginx on CentOS 7: which one for production?
Hi, I'm currently fiddling with Nginx to get acquainted with its various quirks and idiosyncrasies. I have a public CentOS 7 sandbox server, and I've tried various setups. Install the binary from EPEL, install various binaries from SCLo, build from source. I wonder which version is recommended for production use on CentOS 7. Any suggestions? Cheers & happy Christmas holidays,

CentOS 7 + KDE - default keyboard layout?
Hi, I'm currently fiddling with CentOS 7 and KDE 4.14, and I must say, I'm pleasantly surprised. This is one of the cleanest implementations of KDE I've ever seen, and with some tweaking (a lot, in fact) this can be turned into a highly functional desktop with all the bling and bells and whistles. But right now, I have some minor problems to solve. First things first. My system is

Thunderbird vs. Evolution vs. OwnCloud
Hi, I'm currently using Thunderbird synced to OwnCloud on my main workstation running Slackware64 14.1. I just installed CentOS 7 on my Asus S300 laptop. It's running nicely, and I'm spending some time getting acquainted with it. I wonder if I should stick with Thunderbird or go with the default Evolution application, since this seems to be better integrated into the desktop, namely

Unexpected behavior of 'yum group list' and 'yum group install'
Hi, I'm currently experimenting with Yum on a fresh CentOS 7 minimal install, and I'm getting some puzzling results. Here's what I did. 1. Install CentOS 7 from the Minimal CD. 2. Install 'deltarpm' and update all packages. 3. Install the "Core" package group: 'yum group install "Core"' 4. Install the "Base" package group: 'yum

CentOS 8 and yum-plugin-priorities
Hi, I've been regularly using the Yum Priorities plugin for the last decade or so. Apparently it has been obsoleted with CentOS 8. I've googled around for replacements, and there is some conflicting or otherwise misleading information about it. I'm aware the late Yum developer Seth Vidal had a bad opinion of priorities. This being said, I like the idea of third party repositories

CentOS 7.6 1810 vs. VirtualBox : bug with keyboard layout selection

My only use for VirtualBox is making screenshots of the installer, and sometimes for a quick test, because it's easy to make a VM clone in a single click. Niki -- Microlinux -

Squid + SquidGuard : static block page not working
Hi, I've been working with Squid + SquidGuard for a few years, though only on Slackware. I'm currently transferring my proxy expertise to CentOS 7, and right now I'm having a little problem with that. Squid works perfectly so far as a transparent HTTP + HTTPS cache proxy. The next step is to add SquidGuard, so I installed it and edited the most basic /etc/squid/squidGuard.conf file

XScreenSaver
Hi, I'm currently moving all our local school's desktop clients from Slackware 14.1 to CentOS 7 + Xfce. Right now I'm fine-tuning the default user profile. I have a problem with XScreenSaver. The application per se works very well. Only there's a hard-coded pop-up window that reminds the user that he's not running the latest version. So, if I'm running version 5.36 as

CentOS 7 + KDE : post-installation script
Hi, I just spent two rainy days writing and fine-tuning a post-installation script for CentOS 7 and KDE. https://github.com/kikinovak/centos-7-desktop-kde I've just tested it on three different machines here, and it works quite nicely. Feel free to give it a spin and make some suggestions. Cheers, Niki -- Microlinux - Solutions informatiques durables 7, place de l'?glise - 30730

Slightly OT : newsletters, mail formatting and netiquette
Hi, This question is not exactly CentOS-related strictly speaking, but here goes. I'm running a few newsletter servers for myself and a handful of clients on public CentOS servers with PHPList. For the last twenty years or so I've followed the basic rule that mails should have no formatting whatsoever, only simple text. And now I wonder if that basic rule of netiquette also applies to

HPLIP vs. CentOS
Hi, Our local school has recently acquired an HP PageWide Pro 477 professional printer. According to HP, the printer requires HPLIP 3.16.3 at least. Unfortunately, CentOS is only shipping HPLIP 3.15.9. So I downloaded and installed the hplip/hplipfull package from the HP site. Installing this thing and getting it to work is not exactly a trivial task, as I documented in my blog:

I spent a few hours fiddling with various driver versions and configurations. In the end, I simply ripped out the %&#@$ Quadro card and replaced it with a GeForce 8300, which works perfectly with the kmod-nvidia-340xx driver.
