I've just done this with the latest DVD using dd if=CentOS-7-x86_64-DVD-1810.iso of=/dev/sdb where sdb was the USB drive as assigned by the kernel when I plugged it in. I got this by running tail -f /var/log/messages before inserting the

USB install annoyances
I tried to boot from my 6.0 USB key, no joy. Updated it to 6.2. Still no joy: it gets started, I do the disk layout, it formats the drives, and then fails, saying that it can't find "image# 1". Over in the log, I see a lot of it not finding any drive at all, yet all the h/d drives and sda2, which is what the USB key is, and where the linux partition is, are mounted. Guys, any idea

Bootable USB keys : which brand ?
Hi, In my daily work I'm mainly using USB keys for work : one with CentOS 7, one with OpenSUSE Leap 15.1, one with Slax Live for data recovery purposes, one with Ghost4Linux and one with FreeDOS which I use for flashing the odd BIOS. Last week I bought a set of three flashy colored USB keys in a local shop. To my surprise, none of them seem to be able to boot anything. When I write a

Making a CentOS livecd bootable on a flash drive
I was following the guide at https://projects.centos.org/trac/livecd/ to do this, and sure enough it claimed the partition wasn't bootable, so fdisk to toggle the flag bootable yet it still didn't boot. Any subtle nuance anyone might know to do this? Thanks! jlc

Trying to create bootable USB flash drive WITHOUT persistence
I've got an embedded x86 system built with Yocto, which boots from a USB flash drive. It uses a loop mount to give access to an ext3 root file system contained within a FAT16 file, which means it has persistent storage. What I want is something that boots from the flash drive, but copies everything into a large RAM disk, and runs from there, so that it doesn't touch the flash drive once

Simplifying making a USB install key
Ok, where/how do I submit this to the CentOS project? Here's a complete script - anyone, *please* feel free to test it, and let me know if I've missed anything. Creating a bootable partition on a USB disk with syslinux
Hello, I have a 2GB USB disk on key on /dev/sdb1. I had created on it one partition (FAT16). This partition holds all cylinders of the USB disk. I want to create a bootable Linux USB disk. For this, I tried: syslinux -s /dev/sdb1 An than I ran: fdisk -l /dev/sdb Disk /dev/sdb: 2048 MB, 2048729600 bytes 64 heads, 62 sectors/track, 1008 cylinders Units = cylinders of 3968 * 512 = 2031616

Make USB bootable drive: Rufus
Had seen various folks ask about how to do this (I did mine long ago and far away to make my Windows machine dual-bootable to Win or CentOS) and while looking for some HD repair diagnostics, ran across this and thought it may be useful to some folks. http://rufus.akeo.ie/ I've not yet used it, but it looks easy. YMMV, of course, as may mine! :-) Bill

USB flash drive stopped working properly....
This past Tuesday (2/22/07) my flash drive started acting really strange - it only worked intermittently and would disappear right after an access or two. Yesterday it stopped working altogether - I couldn't even access it through my WinXP-on-VMWare. I rebooted my machine, and it worked fine after that. Is there some time limit on how long a USB flash drive will work in CentOS or is this a

Bootable CD for booting of USB HDD
Hi, I bought a USB hard drive, got Mandriva installed on it, and made it bootable with extlinux. Works great on machines that can boot from USB. I also created a boot cd using the instructions in the wiki. This is working too. The only problem with the boot cd is that I had to copy the kernel, initrd, etc. to the cd. This means that whenever I install a new kernel I'll have to create and

syslinux fails to make a bootable USB stick in Slackware64-14.1 installer
Running "syslinux -s /dev/dsb" during installation of Slackware64-14.1 (to make a bootable USB stick) fails like this: Error converting to codepage 850 Invalid argument Cannot initialize 'S:' Bad target s:/ldlinux.sys syslinux: failed to create ldlinux.sys But running the same command in the installed system succeeds. Unable to boot my USB flash drive, even with USB-ZIP trick...
I've been using a USB flash drive for quite a while now, and in my previous system it worked great, but, I find with my new motherboard now that I have upgraded I can't boot it. So I decided to try the trick mentioned in the README.usbkey file where you make a ZIP drive like image on the flash drive and set the BIOS to boot a USB ZIP drive instead. Unfortunately, it still doesn't
