PBKDF2 password hashing as in ASP.NET Core
Thank you for your reply. It's not that simple, though. Just because some core algorithms are standardised and should be compatible doesn't mean their use in different implementations leads to interoperable data. The key point here seems to be that Dovecot just supports SHA-1 with PBKDF2, not SHA-256. So I'm out of luck here. The different formats are no longer relevant then.

PBKDF2 password hashing as in ASP.NET Core
Hello, I'm setting up a new server and, again, seek for a decently secure (from a security specialist's POV) way to store and verify user passwords in a database. Additionally now, GDPR requires me to use a solid state-of-the-art solution. My OS is Ubuntu 20.04, Dovecot version 2.3.7, database backend with PostgreSQL 12. Obviously, storing the plaintext password is a terrible idea.

argonid and dovecote
on a FreeBSD 11.2 amd64 machine, I am trying to get Dovecot 2.3.4 to play nice with "argonid" encryption. In the "10-auth.conf" file, I tried: auth_mechanisms = plain argon2id Upon restarting dovecot, I received an error message when attempting to actually it: auth: FATAL: Unknown authentication mechanism "ARGON2ID" Output from doveadm pw -l doveadm pw -l SHA1

Time for key stretching in encrypted private keys?
In 0.9.7 the private key encryption was switched from 3DES to AES, (https://bugzilla.mindrot.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1550) the motivation for this being that 128-bits of security is better than the 112 or so you get from 3DES these days. Interestingly that bug is about upgrading to AES-256, but we ended up with AES-128. Presumably due to the Solaris crippling? However ssh-keygen still uses a

Location of match?
Is it possible with Ferret to find the location of the matches in a document? For example imagine I have 100 documents and I search with the phrase "bob~0.5" and that returns 3 matching documents. How can I then find all locations in a specific document where it matched "bob~0.5". What I need is something like an array that contains the start index and length for each

Rails 3 app has strange behaviour with Mysql2 database
Hi, I have developed a little web app with a sqlite3 database in development environment. Now I switched over to mysql2 for production environment. At a first look everthing looks good! BUT, I have delayed_jobs that run methods in the background, where two nested active records were compared with "if hash1 == hash2", then it should just show whether they are the same or not. With

PBKDF2 password hashing as in ASP.NET Core
In case you are interested, https://wiki.dovecot.org/HowTo/ConvertPasswordSchemes By the way, I am bit sceptical that CRYPT-SHA512 is less secure than PBKDF2. CRYPT-SHA512 is not "just" SHA512(salt||password), it does at least 1000 rounds of hashing in similar way as PBKDF2 does. So, what is your reasoning for claiming that PBKDF2 is much secure than CRYPT-SHA512? Also, if you look

Can Auth dict proxy protocol be used to validate a password?
I'm interested in using authentication via a UNIX socket as documented at http://wiki2.dovecot.org/AuthDatabase/Dict. (We are currently using a checkpassword script to enable us to authenticate against a django app that stores passwords in pbkdf2 format, but I'm concerned about scalability as we grow - specifically the comment about performance on

[PATCH] New commands to list devices by UUID and label
This isn't very well tested at the moment because my main testing machine is broken. So just for comment, only to be applied with caution. This patch has two new commands which make it much easier to look up filesystems by their UUID or label. They are: list-devices-by-uuid list-devices-by-label Each returns a hashtable (or whatever the equivalent structure is in your favourite

/dev/md1 => 93% Used. Warning. Disk Filling up. - what would be safe to delete in /boot ?
Hello CentOS users, in the recent time I keep getting the logwatch warnings from my 2 dedicated servers running CentOS 7.4.1708. I guess because of the numerous kernel updates (because of Spectre+Meltdown) in the near past? Could someone please suggest me, which files in my /boot partition would be safe to delete? I would like to avoid the situation of having to boot the rescue partiton etc.
