CentOS 7 + KDE : Dolphin weirdness
Hi,
I'm running CentOS 7 + KDE on my workstation. Since the latest big batch
of updates, Dolphin behaves a bit weirdly. When I download a .zip
archive and then right click and "Extract here", the extracted files
don't show. I have to hit F5 to refresh the current directory view and
display the new files.
Cheers,
Niki

CentOS 7, KDE, Dolphin and MTP support
Hi,
It looks like KDE's file manager Dolphin doesn't support MTP under
CentOS 7. When I plug in an MTP device like my Nikon camera or an
Android phone, Digikam shows its content OK, but Dolphin seems to ignore
it.
For now, my custom CentOS 7 + KDE desktop meets about 99 % of my needs.
Now I've decided to tackle the remaining 1 %. Yesterday for example, I
managed to correct the

CentOS 7 + MATE : Folder contents not refreshed in file manager
Hi,
I just migrated my workstation running CentOS 7 from KDE to MATE.
It looks like I'm having the same problem with the Caja file manager
than with Dolphin. Folder contents don't get refreshed automatically,
and I have to hit F5.
For example, when I download a file (say, a compressed archive) from the
Internet, I have to hit F5 to see the file in Caja. And when I extract
the archive, I

Problem with bugs.centos.org
Hi,
I wanted to create an account on bugs.centos.org to report a minor but
annoying bug with Dolphin.
After trying to register by providing the login (kikinovak) and email
address (info at microlinux.fr), I'm told that the email is already in use.
Uh oh. Maybe I already created an account years ago and then forgot
about it. So I click on the field for forgotten passwords, only to be

How do I default to "Folder View" in my custom KDE user profile?
Hi,
I'm currently busy tweaking KDE 4.14 on CentOS 7 to my needs. I want to
use it as a base for an enterprise class desktop. In my humble opinion,
CentOS' default KDE configuration is not very usable, so I created a
default user profile that looks more like what openSUSE looked like a
few years back.
Here's the little script I'm using to install the various configuration

CentOS 7 + KDE : post-installation script
Hi,
I just spent two rainy days writing and fine-tuning a post-installation
script for CentOS 7 and KDE.
https://github.com/kikinovak/centos-7-desktop-kde
I've just tested it on three different machines here, and it works quite
nicely. Feel free to give it a spin and make some suggestions.
Cheers,
Niki

Thanks for all your suggestions. I spent a few hours fiddling with
various driver versions and configurations. In the end, I simply ripped
out the %&#@$ Quadro card and replaced it with a GeForce 8300, which
works perfectly with the kmod-nvidia-340xx driver.

SquidGuard update in EPEL

No, there isn't.
I was just puzzled that there was an update to an application that's
been manifestly dormant for more than ten years.

Accessing Android phones on CentOS 7
Hi,
My standard Linux desktop is based on a personal blend of CentOS 7 with
KDE 4.14 and various add-ons from third-party repositories like EPEL and
Nux-Dextop. After a brief stint on OpenSUSE Leap 15.0, this is what I
use on my workstation and on my laptop. And this is also what I install
on my client's machines, just like I did in our local school's computer
room.

I searched some more and I *think* I found a bit of valuable
information. The problem seems to come from the cdlabelgen backend. As
far as I can tell, it uses the

OpenVAS: confusion with 3rd party repos
Hi,
I'm currently experimenting with OpenVAS, the vulnerability scanner
which was forked from Nessus.
I'm reading through various HOWTOs and tutorials, and it seems like I'm
stuck very early in my fiddling process.
All the CentOS-based tutorials I've found mention a third-party Atomic
repo, and here's how the installation usually begins.

Squid + SquidGuard : static block page not working
Hi,
I've been working with Squid + SquidGuard for a few years, though only
on Slackware. I'm currently transferring my proxy expertise to CentOS 7,
and right now I'm having a little problem with that.
Squid works perfectly so far as a transparent HTTP + HTTPS cache proxy.
The next step is to add SquidGuard, so I installed it and edited the
most basic /etc/squid/squidGuard.conf file

CentOS 7 not shutting down correctly
Hi,
I have CentOS 7 with KDE installed on my workstation. Sometimes - like
just now - the system refuses to shutdown correctly. The problem
appeared since I installed the OpenVAS vulnerability scanner (the one
from EPEL), so I don't know if this is linked. When I try to shutdown
the system, I see shutdown messages, and then it stops short on the
following message:

Problem with libkexiv2 ?
Hi,
I'm currently installing a dozen CentOS 7 + KDE desktops in our local
school. I've already installed a minimal X11 + WindowMaker, and now I
want to install KDE on top of that, but the installation fails. There's
some broken dependency in the repos. I've narrowed the problem down to
the libkexiv2 package. Here's that I get.

Apache + mod_evasive : problem with test.pl
Hi,
I'm currently experimenting with the mod_evasive module for Apache, to
protect the server against potential DoS attacks. Here's what I did so far.
# yum install mod_evasive
Don't touch mod_evasive's default configuration, just restart Apache.

The package includes a test.pl script supposed to launch a testing DoS
attack. Unfortunately this

HPLIP vs. CentOS
Hi,
Our local school has recently acquired an HP PageWide Pro 477
professional printer.
According to HP, the printer requires HPLIP 3.16.3 at least.
Unfortunately, CentOS is only shipping HPLIP 3.15.9.
So I downloaded and installed the hplip/hplipfull package from the HP
site. Installing this thing and getting it to work is not exactly a
trivial task, as I documented in my blog:
