Accessing Android phones on CentOS 7
Hi,
My standard Linux desktop is based on a personal blend of CentOS 7 with
KDE 4.14 and various add-ons from third-party repositories like EPEL and
Nux-Dextop. After a brief stint on OpenSUSE Leap 15.0, this is what I
use on my workstation and on my laptop. And this is also what I install
on my client's machines, just like I did in our local school's computer
room.
I'm currently

XScreenSaver
Hi,
I'm currently moving all our local school's desktop clients from
Slackware 14.1 to CentOS 7 + Xfce. Right now I'm fine-tuning the default
user profile.
I have a problem with XScreenSaver. The application per se works very
well. Only there's a hard-coded pop-up window that reminds the user that
he's not running the latest version. So, if I'm running version 5.36 as

How to user PDF::Toolkit.pdftk ?
Hi,
I tried to fill a PDF fill template with an xdp file by using
PDF::Toolkit.pdftk("C:/pdf/fic2028.xdp", "fill_form",
"C:/pdf/fic2028.pdf")
But I got the following error
Errno::ENOENT (No such file or directory - "pdftk" "C:/pdf/fic2028.xdp"
"fill_form" "C:/pdf/fic2028.pdf" "-" "dont_ask")

Mail server troubles
Hi,
This is probably a bit OT, but here goes.
I've been running our local school's mail server since 2013, with mail
addresses for school staff and some teachers. The server is running CentOS 7
with Postfix and Dovecot, and it's a nice no-bullshit configuration with SPF,
DKIM and DMARC.
The school sends quite a lot of email out to parents, and sometimes, mail gets
rejected:

No network on cloned CentOS 7 installation
Hi,
I have a few identical Dell Optiplex 7010 machines that I want to use
for our school's computer room. I tried to clone these installations
(like I did before on CentOS 5 and various versions of Slackware), but
this time I ran into a problem.
Here's what I did.
1. Install one computer and zero unused hard disk sectors with dd.
2. Send the image to a local FTP server using G4L

Block internet access for some users on the LAN ?
Hi,
In our local school we have two servers and roughly 80 clients. The
network is 192.168.10.0/255.255.255.0, and DHCP+DNS is managed by Dnsmasq.
School PCs (teachers and management) are registered via MAC address and
get an IP address in a specific range:
192.168.10.2 - 192.168.10.50 - management + teachers
192.168.10.201 - 192.168.10.220 - computer room

Postfix vs. Thunderbird on Mac OS
Hi,
I'm running our local school's mail server on CentOS 7, Postfix and
Dovecot. We get quite a lot of spam, so I have the following sender
restrictions in my /etc/postfix/main.cf:

# Restrictions SMTP

smtpd_sender_restrictions = reject_unknown_sender_domain,

Squid and HTTPS interception on CentOS 7 ?
Hi,
I've been running Squid successfully on CentOS 7 (and before that on 6
and 5), and it's always been running nicely. I've been using it mostly
as a transparent proxy filter in school networks.
So far, I've only been able to filter HTTP.
Do any of you do transparent HTTPS filtering ? Any suggestions, advice,
caveats, do's and don'ts ?
Cheers from the snowy South of

Thunderbird vs. Evolution vs. OwnCloud
Hi,
I'm currently using Thunderbird synced to OwnCloud on my main
workstation running Slackware64 14.1. I just installed CentOS 7 on my
Asus S300 laptop. It's running nicely, and I'm spending some time
getting acquainted with it.
I wonder if I should stick with Thunderbird or go with the default
Evolution application, since this seems to be better integrated into the
desktop, namely

CentOS 7 on dual-monitor workstation?
Hi,
My workstation is currently running Slackware Linux 14.1 64-bit, and I'm
considering replacing that by CentOS 7, which I've already installed on
my laptop.
The PC has an NVidia GeForce GT 520 video card with two 19'' monitors
attached to it. I'm using the proprietary 'nvidia' driver.
I vaguely remember having read somewhere that RHEL/CentOS 7 with GNOME 3

CentOS 7 + Xfce + GDM : disable "switch user" ?
Hi,
I have CentOS 7 + Xfce + GDM installed on all our local school's desktop
clients.
I'd like to disable the "switch user" menu entry, since our desktop
clients have a relatively limited amount of RAM. Most users tend to use
the "switch user" functionality to log off, and at the end of the day,
the computer has no RAM left.
I know there is a way to disable this

Trouble setting up HP Officejet Pro 8600 printer on CentOS 7 + KDE
Hi,
I just installed a CentOS 7 + KDE desktop in my office's network. So
far, I'm quite happy with the results, though I have some trouble
getting the printer to work. All the other machines in my office
(server, desktops, workstation) are running Slackware64 14.1 or 14.2,
and they can all use the printer perfectly.
I installed hplip-gui and ran it. The printer is a network printer, it

Running the Wine emulator on CentOS 7
Hi,
Up until recently, I've been running Wine 1.6.2 on my workstation under
Slackware64 14.1. I used it to emulate a handful of legacy apps that ran
under Windows XP. They worked perfectly with that setup.
After migrating the workstation from Slackware to CentOS 7, I installed
the Wine packages, but none of my applications run. I only get an error
message about "wrong EXE
