question re: ls oddity
Hi all!
I use Centos-7 all the time. I also have a Fedora-26 VM that I use only
occasionally.
Today I noticed that ls on the two systems gives different results when
listing the same (networked) directory.
the one on fedora 26 shows files with spaces in the names like this:
'CHURCH FAMILY ADDRESS AND PHONE LIST.doc'
whereas the one on Centos shows it without the quotes.
both systems

gosh, I hope not! I was in the middle of using it, playing solitaire
and moving the mouse around a lot.

A question about why the function "recv" return 0
I am a website developer. We deploy a Nginx server on centos to provide HTTP services. Recently, some customers of our website were complaining about that occasionally they could not open the webpage, the web browser show that the tcp connection was reset. I checked the Nginx logs and source code and found that the function "recv" return 0 when some customers made HTTP requests. Our

Anyone installed the amazon downloader on 5.1?
Just tried to install the Amazon-downloader on Centos 5.1 (the Fedora 8
version, which seems the closest match of any they offer).
Of course it gets a bazillion unfulfilled dependencies. so I tried
"yum localinstall ./a*m" and it trundles along for a while finding several
of the packages available then spews out this:
Error: Missing Dependency: libboost_date_time.so.3 is needed by

Centos backup tools
Hi all!
I'm building a raid box to use for backups, connectivity will be either
USB3 or esata.
Looking for suggestions on backup software I can use.
I know there's rsync, which may be a good solution. I also find backupPC
at epel, backintime also at epel, kbackup.
DejaDup looks interesting, but none of the repos I'm set up to use
shows it being available.
some small details: I

no longer goes to standby when lid is closed
since I got the big bolus of updates from the CR repo a few days ago my
netbook (AcerAspire One D255E) will no longer go to standby when the
lid is closed.
This was a Gnome desktopp installation with theh MATE desktop fromm
EPEL.
I've verified that the correct setting still exists in power manager
but it persists in continuing to run when the lid closes.
it WILL go to standby if explicitly

what is CodeMeter and why is it running on my CentOS box?
I just stumbled over /var/log/CodeMeter, which contains a number of large
log files.
I know I'm getting old and forgetful, but I can't remember intentionally
installing that package.
Yum just says "installed" instead of listing a repo.
Looking at codemeter.com, it seems to work with something called a
"cm stick". I don't have one, don't want one, and never

Firewire on Centos-6 ???
Hi all!
I'm trying to use my first-ever firewire device, and just OOB I'm not
getting very far, so advice would be appreciated.
When I plug in the device I see some entries in /var/log/messages:

installing C7 on a laptop with Win7, dual boot
Hi all!
I've just installed C7 on my netbook that already contained Win7 (and
also Fedora 19, which the C7 is intended to replace). The Fedora installer
had found the windows installation and it appeared in the grub menu,
and was bootable and worked fine.
The C7 installer did not put the windows installation into the grub
menu.
with some googling I found a page at

Using LVM to implement RAID
Hi all!
I've recently noticed that recent versions of LVM include RAID
capabilities, so that one could presumably implement (e.g.) RAID-1
without having to use Linux Software RAID.
Given the complexity of LBM, I'm wondering how practical and how safe
this is (compared to Linux Software RAID), and also if anyone here knows
more about it than I do (which isn't much), and especially if

things weirdly different in new installation
I've just built a new system and installed latest Centos 5.3 on it. My old
box also has an up to date Centos 5 on it.
Some things are just plain different between the two installations, and
it's stumping me why that would be. Example:
on the old box, the shutdown dialog offers restart, cancel, shutdown,
and also standby and hibernate. and the standby and hibernate options
work, too.

Centos 5.8: starting firefox-16.0.1 kills X
This just started happening this evening.
a little history:
way back last year, or thereabouts, I posted about a weird problem I was
having. over the course of 2 or 3 days I figured out how to fix it, but
not what the cause was. the fix amounts to navigating to my user's
.local/share/mime directory and removing the file named "globs".
So, back in the present: this evening that

Anyone know where I can find a libesmtp binary RPM for EL5/Centos 5?
(and maybe a RPM for Balsa, too?) I have an old balsa rpm, but there
are newer versions available as source.
Thanks!

off NM problem [low priority]
On Centos 6.5, I use NM to bring up the VPN to my office, and to disconnect
from it.
every now and then I screw up and disconnect the LAN itself instead of
the VPN.
once I do that, even after reconnecting to the LAN I'm hosed.
/etc/resolv.conf hasn't been put back to the non-VPN version, so I manually
fix that.
but even then I can't get any name resolution.
I'm sure that
