Exactly. Except this doesn't seem to work under CentOS 7. The mentioned
file doesn't exist here. As for the "Nothing To Do" extension, it's beta
software, and I don't

Strange problem with CentOS 7 and guest additions in VirtualBox
Hi,
I'm having a very weird problem with CentOS as a VirtualBox guest. Let
me explain it step by step.
tl;dr: I can install VirtualBox Guest Additions and configure a
fullscreen 1280x1024 graphical resolution on a full install, but not on
a reduced install with a lightweight window manager.
Here's what I did.
1. Install vanilla CentOS 7 with KDE.
2. Boot to reduced 1024x768

owncloud on CentOS - I have problems installing/updating recently

As I said in a previous post, the EPEL OwnCloud client packages are
lagging behind a bit, but so far, the only inconvenience are the nagging
update notifications on startup.

Thunderbird vs. Evolution vs. OwnCloud
Hi,
I'm currently using Thunderbird synced to OwnCloud on my main
workstation running Slackware64 14.1. I just installed CentOS 7 on my
Asus S300 laptop. It's running nicely, and I'm spending some time
getting acquainted with it.
I wonder if I should stick with Thunderbird or go with the default
Evolution application, since this seems to be better integrated into the
desktop, namely

This may be a very far-fetched idea, but here goes. I don't know much
about Docker, just fiddled around with it a couple hours in a VM. Since

Dropbox on CentOS 6?
Hi,
I just spent a couple of unnerving hours trying to make Dropbox work on
CentOS 6.6.
Is there a way that
1. Actually works?
2. Doesn't include jumping through burning loops?
Cheers from the sunny south of France,
Niki

Package group "X Window System" has disappeared
Hi,
Until last week, I could install a CentOS 7 based desktop using the
following approach:
1. Install minimal system.
2. yum groupinstall "X Window System"
3. yum install gdm gnome-classic-session gnome-terminal liberation-fonts
4. Install applications as needed.
This morning, the package group "X Window System" seems to have
disappeared. This is embarrassing.

I know this is weird, but I've had cases where the downloaded NVidia
driver worked and the ELRepo driver didn't, and the other way around.

Yum on CentOS 8: Failed to set locale, defaulting to C
Hi,
I'm currently fiddling with CentOS 8.0 on a sandbox server in order to get
acquainted with its various quirks and idiosyncrasies.
Here's the first curious detail I noticed.
I used the CentOS installer in french (since I live in France), but I like my
server systems to default to english. (If you've ever read one of these funny
"frengrish" SELinux alerts, you'll

CentOS 8 and yum-plugin-priorities
Hi,
I've been regularly using the Yum Priorities plugin for the last decade or so.
Apparently it has been obsoleted with CentOS 8.
I've googled around for replacements, and there is some conflicting or
otherwise misleading information about it.
I'm aware the late Yum developer Seth Vidal had a bad opinion of priorities.
This being said, I like the idea of third party repositories

Unexpected behavior of 'yum group list' and 'yum group install'
Hi,
I'm currently experimenting with Yum on a fresh CentOS 7 minimal
install, and I'm getting some puzzling results. Here's what I did.
1. Install CentOS 7 from the Minimal CD.
2. Install 'deltarpm' and update all packages.
3. Install the "Core" package group: 'yum group install "Core"'
4. Install the "Base" package group: 'yum

CentOS 7: changes to php.ini
Hi,
I'm hosting a few web apps like OwnCloud, Wordpress and Dolibarr on
CentOS 7 that require a handful of changes to php.ini. I have to define
some custom values for post_max_size, upload_max_filesize, etc.
I don't know if I'm supposed to edit /etc/php.ini directly or if changes
should be put in a configuration file stub in /etc/php.d. For example, I
followed the recommendations of

Reduce existing CentOS 7 installation to "Minimal install" - services?

That did add a handful of packages indeed (as was already suggested in
the previous answer), but the problem still persists.
After rebooting, the system hangs after mounting the /boot partition and
then exits into emergency mode.
I'm puzzled.

Easy way to strip down CentOS?
Hi,
I wonder if there's an easy way to strip down an installation to the
bare minimum, e. g. the packages you get when you select "minimum
installation".
In Slackware, the bone-headed package manager slackpkg has a few nice
options, among which 'slackpkg clean-system', which removes all
third-party packages in one single operation, or 'slackpkg remove

Hi again & problem with minimal CentOS and Github
Hi everybody,
I'm back to CentOS after a long period during which I've been using
mainly Slackware. I still use Slackware for teaching and for my local
clients (on servers and desktops), but right now, I'm planning to update
my own documentation about CentOS, which is still based on version 5.x.
First things first. For the moment I have a sandbox server in my office
