CentOS 7 not shutting down correctly
Hi, I have CentOS 7 with KDE installed on my workstation. Sometimes - like just now - the system refuses to shutdown correctly. The problem appeared since I installed the OpenVAS vulnerability scanner (the one from EPEL), so I don't know if this is linked. When I try to shutdown the system, I see shutdown messages, and then it stops short on the following message: [ OK ] Stopped logout off

CentOS 7 not shutting down correctly
Le 16/10/2017 ? 12:54, Nux! a ?crit : > If you boot without "quiet rhgb" parameters in grub, do you get more > info during shutdown? I removed the 'quiet' boot parameter. Now I'm sure the darn thing will shutdown correctly just to annoy me. :o) -- Microlinux - Solutions informatiques durables 7, place de l'?glise - 30730 Montpezat Web : http://www.microlinux.fr

Reduce existing CentOS 7 installation to "Minimal install" - services?
Hi, When I install a CentOS server/desktop/workstation, I usually start from scratch with a barebone minimal installation, then add packages as needed. Some machines (like dedicated servers in a datacenter) come preconfigured by the hosting company, so I thought it wouldn't be a bad idea to start stripping that stuff first. Here's a little script I wrote, which essentially strips down

CentOS 7 + KDE: sleep mode?
Hi, One of my clients is running CentOS 7 + KDE 4.14 which I installed for her. Everything is running nicely. She asked me - more out of curiosity - if she could use the "Sleep" mode instead of "Shutdown" like she did when she ran Windows, so the PC would be up and running faster the next time. I didn't know what to answer, since I don't explicitly use this mode. Only

Apache + mod_evasive : problem with test.pl
Hi, I'm currently experimenting with the mod_evasive module for Apache, to protect the server against potential DoS attacks. Here's what I did so far. # yum install mod_evasive Don't touch mod_evasive's default configuration, just restart Apache. # systemctl restart httpd The package includes a test.pl script supposed to launch a testing DoS attack. Unfortunately this

Weird bug in 389 Directory Server : no spaces in admin console (CentOS 7)
Hi, I'm currently setting up 389 Directory Server on a server running CentOS 7, and I have a weird and somehow showstopping bug. All the spaces are suddenly missing in the admin console. Here's a screenshot so you can get the idea : https://www.microlinux.fr/download/389-admin-console-2020.png So instead of "Standard branch for configuration information", I get

OpenVAS: confusion with 3rd party repos
Hi, I'm currently experimenting with OpenVAS, the vulnerability scanner which was forked from Nessus. I'm reading through various HOWTOs and tutorials, and it seems like I'm stuck very early in my fiddling process. All the CentOS-based tutorials I've found mention a third-party Atomic repo, and here's how the installation usually begins. # wget -q -O -

CentOS 7.5 (1804) and NetworkManager
Hi, I'm running CentOS on all kinds of setups: servers, workstations, desktops and laptops. Up until now, I'm only using NetworkManager on laptops, since it makes sense to use it there. On servers and desktop clients, I usually remove it and configure the network "traditionally" by simply editing /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-whatever, /etc/resolv.conf, /etc/hosts,

Network configuration: desktop vs. laptop
Hi, I'm just migrating some stuff from Slackware Linux to CentOS, and I have a question about the orthodox way of configuring a network connection. On a desktop or workstation, I usually get rid of NetworkManager: # systemctl stop NetworkManager # yum remove NetworkManager Then I edit the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-XXXXX file corresponding to my network interface. Here's

HPLIP vs. CentOS
Hi, Our local school has recently acquired an HP PageWide Pro 477 professional printer. According to HP, the printer requires HPLIP 3.16.3 at least. Unfortunately, CentOS is only shipping HPLIP 3.15.9. So I downloaded and installed the hplip/hplipfull package from the HP site. Installing this thing and getting it to work is not exactly a trivial task, as I documented in my blog:

Postfix, system notifications and local servers
Hi, I have CentOS 7 running on half a dozen public servers. For some stuff like automatic updates using yum-cron, I have Postfix installed with a relatively basic configuration. This allows me to send important notifications to my mail address info at microlinux.fr. When there's a batch of updates, I get one mail per machine, so I can check quickly if everything went OK without having to

Set LANG on CentOS 6 server
Hi, I'm having a weird problem on a CentOS 6 server. I installed the machine in french, so I have LANG=fr_FR.UTF8 defined. I'd like to define en_US.UTF8, because some output is better readable in english, like chkconfig --list. I replaced fr_FR.UTF8 in /etc/sysconfig/i18n and /boot/grub/grub.conf. Unfortunately, when I reboot the system, I still get this: # echo $LANG fr_FR.UTF-8 Any

Postgrey not working
Hi, I have a working installation of Postfix and Dovecot that works nicely. I've added SpamAssassin, which does a good job of flagging spam. Now I wanted to add greylisting to my server. Here's what I did. $ sudo yum install postgrey Increase the greylisting delay. # /etc/sysconfig/postgrey POSTGREY_OPTS="--delay=300" Edit /etc/postfix/main.cf accordingly.

Style Guide for ASCII Text Documents ?
Hi, Can anyone on this list recommend a good style guide for formatting technical documentation (HOWTOs related to CentOS servers) using ASCII text only ? Markdown and/or AsciiDOC are *not* an option, since these documents should be easily readable in a text console. No network on cloned CentOS 7 installation
Hi, I have a few identical Dell Optiplex 7010 machines that I want to use for our school's computer room. I tried to clone these installations (like I did before on CentOS 5 and various versions of Slackware), but this time I ran into a problem. Here's what I did. 1. Install one computer and zero unused hard disk sectors with dd. 2. Send the image to a local FTP server using G4L

CentOS 7 + GNOME : all icon themes broken after update from CR
The recommended method for undo an update is https://access.redhat.com/solutions/64069, but it's not supported if glibc, kernel, or selinux are changed. I'd give it a try if the system is not critical. Make backups first. OpenVAS: confusion with 3rd party repos

Squid and HTTPS interception on CentOS 7 ?
Nice, thanks for sharing. You could probably just drop your CA cert in the filesystem and run a couple of commands to get it imported, rather than having to import the CA in the browsers individually. You could probably deliver it via yum/rpm or better yet, ansible or even some shell script. -- Sent from the Delta quadrant using Borg technology! Nux! www.nux.ro ----- Original Message -----
