Power Fail Protection Update
Many thanks to those that responded to my original posting with
information about Network UPS Tools and commercial UPS products.
In our planning a path forward to implement UPS-based power fail
protection, we have come across what appears to be an issue with
the state of the CentOS 6 machines being UPS protected.? Most of
these machines are desktop/deskside machines that are likely to
be idle

RE: standby mode
I think you answered your own question. Samba (smbd) is a service. It is
doing its job and ready to offer service at any time. Apparently this
involves periodically accessing the disk. There is nothing wrong with this;
it is normal operation. Samba won't work anyway when you are in standby, so
you might as well stop it when you are done using it.

zfs send/receive : panic and reboot
<copied from opensolaris-dicuss as this probably belongs here.>
I kept on trying to migrate my pool with children (see previous threads) and had the (bad) idea to try the -d option on the receive part.
The system reboots immediately.
Here is the log in /var/adm/messages

plotting help request II
Dear all,
meanwhile i found out how to handle the coordinate thing and plot the
lines like i like.
the remaining problem is, i need something like names.arg does in
barplot for my plot.
my plot connects several dots with several lines. and now i like
characters as the names of the intersects of the x-axis.

vector2=c(c,d)

EMC Clariion stanby power supply
Hello All.
I'm working on building support for the Clariion range of standby power
supplies. I've found you can get hold of these easily on ebay like:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/EMC-CLARiiON-Standby-Power-Supply-118031985-
SPS-1000W-/160373295258
There is a problem that I haven't been able to work around. After 90 seconds
without power, the device shuts down. This is because

How to make/recieve call using asterisk when there is a power failure?
Hi,
I am supportive of the asterisk, but I have some concern, though the concern
also applies to traditional pbx as well. Hope someone can shine some light
into it. Thanks.
During a power failure situation, analog pstn lines that connect directly to
the analog phones will most likely still be able to make and receive calls.
However, for the Asterisk implementation, unless you have a

Windows not reconnecting after Standby
Thank you very much. I can confirm that the TAP-WIN32 driver behaves
differently. The quick tests so far revealed that it either reconnected
after Standby and Hibernation.
I think that at some point I started using the OpenVPN drivers when I had
either had trouble with unsigned drivers or the network detection and then
just stayed with it. Thanks for pointing out my self-made problem.

Monitor power save question
I decided to try the x86_64 version of CentOS 5 on my new desktop since
it has an Athlon 64 X2 CPU. The one really perplexing oddity is that
the monitor no longer goes to power save mode (standby) if the system is
idle long enough (e.g., overnight).
The "power management" option is set to put the display to sleep after
thirty minutes. The display gets blanked but it never goes to

Power Fail Protection
Some of our largest systems run Windows because it supports engineering
applications that we use regularly.? These applications have unattended
runs that often take between ten and fifteen hours to complete.? We have
taken the recommendation of the application supplier and equipped these
Windows machines with UPS protection for 30 minutes at full load.
The UPSs are Ethernet connected.? A support

Power management and remote X sessions
I have about 50 CentOS 4.x/5.x stations running as thin clients. So
Gnome is running on the remote machine and the station is merely acting
as an X terminal. I would like to enable some power management. I
think I can control the monitor's dpms features and timeouts in the
xorg.conf on the stations. But if I want to have the stations
themselves go into standby mode after a set amount

page.visual_effect :highlight
I have some code that will do the highlight, fade effect on a block of
text. It seems to work just fine until it is fired multiple times very
rapidly.
The end color matches a grey background and the start color is a yellow.
Say its run 4 times a second for 3-5 seconds. When the flashing catches
up the text will fade for the last time to the end color, then the
background will switch to a
