Thunderbird vs. Evolution vs. OwnCloud
Hi, I'm currently using Thunderbird synced to OwnCloud on my main workstation running Slackware64 14.1. I just installed CentOS 7 on my Asus S300 laptop. It's running nicely, and I'm spending some time getting acquainted with it. I wonder if I should stick with Thunderbird or go with the default Evolution application, since this seems to be better integrated into the desktop, namely

As much as I appreciate Slackware's bone-headed philosophy, the installer, the simple startup scripts, the general Keep-It-Simple approach and the overall robustness, the absence of PAM has been a real showstopper for me. Until now the only way to setup

Reduce existing CentOS 7 installation to "Minimal install" - services?
Hi, When I install a CentOS server/desktop/workstation, I usually start from scratch with a barebone minimal installation, then add packages as needed. Some machines (like dedicated servers in a datacenter) come preconfigured by the hosting company, so I thought it wouldn't be a bad idea to start stripping that stuff first. Here's a little script I wrote, which essentially strips down

Challenging times in trying to access oracle Linux documentation
Good afternoon everyone, hope you all are well. Apologies if this is considered unwelcome -- asking oracle question in centos group -- but a lot of centos Vs oracle is going on here so hoping this will not be shot down. I am unable to access any of the oracle documentation I need, as it keeps on asking for support identifier number, which, as far as I can tell, is only available if I purchase an

I bluntly admit not using SELinux, because until now, I mainly used more bone-headed systems that didn't implement it. Maybe this is the right time to get started. I understand there's a wealth of information about SELinux.

Primary DNS server with BIND on a public machine running CentOS 7
Hi, I just installed CentOS 7 on a public server. I'd like to setup BIND as a primary DNS server for a few domains. Until now, all my public machines were running Slackware Linux, and setting up BIND on a Slackware machine is relatively easy. In its out of the box configuration, it has a bone-headed caching nameserver role, which is quite easy to expand to a primary nameserver. Here's my

Erratic local hostname resolution with Dnsmasq
Hi, My local server is running CentOS 7. The machine has two NICs and is acting as a gateway. For DHCP and DNS, I'm using Dnsmasq. I have a strange little problem with local hostname resolution. Before going into more details, here's my configuration. [root at nestor:~] # ifconfig enp2s0: flags=4163<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 inet 192.168.0.2 netmask

Squid + SquidGuard : static block page not working
Hi, I've been working with Squid + SquidGuard for a few years, though only on Slackware. I'm currently transferring my proxy expertise to CentOS 7, and right now I'm having a little problem with that. Squid works perfectly so far as a transparent HTTP + HTTPS cache proxy. The next step is to add SquidGuard, so I installed it and edited the most basic /etc/squid/squidGuard.conf file

Postfix, system notifications and local servers
Hi, I have CentOS 7 running on half a dozen public servers. For some stuff like automatic updates using yum-cron, I have Postfix installed with a relatively basic configuration. This allows me to send important notifications to my mail address info at microlinux.fr. When there's a batch of updates, I get one mail per machine, so I can check quickly if everything went OK without having to

Physically moving a mail server vs. cached DNS
Hi, I just moved my main mail account and web content from a low-cost (low-quality) provider to my own root server running CentOS 7. I transferred the domain name from DNS management to my registrar, configured BIND, Apache, Postfix, Dovecot, NTP, SELinux, etc. Now things are running rather nicely. One thing is puzzling me though. The updated mail server DNS seems to have spread around so far.

CentOS 7 + KDE : post-installation script
Hi, I just spent two rainy days writing and fine-tuning a post-installation script for CentOS 7 and KDE. https://github.com/kikinovak/centos-7-desktop-kde I've just tested it on three different machines here, and it works quite nicely. Feel free to give it a spin and make some suggestions. Cheers, Niki -- Microlinux - Solutions informatiques durables 7, place de l'?glise - 30730

HPLIP vs. CentOS
Hi, Our local school has recently acquired an HP PageWide Pro 477 professional printer. According to HP, the printer requires HPLIP 3.16.3 at least. Unfortunately, CentOS is only shipping HPLIP 3.15.9. So I downloaded and installed the hplip/hplipfull package from the HP site. Installing this thing and getting it to work is not exactly a trivial task, as I documented in my blog:

[LLVMdev] Removal of GVStub methods from MachineCodeEmitter, ELFWriter, and MachOWriter
I have done a possible cleanup patch for the MachineCodeEmitter, ELFWriter, and MachOWriter classes. It removes the two startGVStub(), and finishGVStub() JIT specific methods. You may remember the following comments :- /// JIT SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS - DO NOT IMPLEMENT THESE HERE! To get rid of these easily turned out to be a semicomplex modification because of the JITInfo classes dependance on
