CentOS 7.6 external USB dmesg issue
I have a brand new 2T external Samsung SSD disk. (two of them) for backup.
I tried the first one and had an issue, I tried the second one and got the
same issue.
Am I doing something wrong ? I find it hard to believe the SSD (both) are
bad.
I plugged in the USB 3.1 adapter, I fdisk /dev/sdd, n, p, default, default,
w.
then mkfs.ext4 -j /dev/sdd1, then just mount and rsync.

Installing from USB
I found this http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/InstallFromUSBkey
So for centos 7 if did the dd command seemed to work great.
I did the install.
So now I'd like to "modify" the USB key to add a boot menu option with my
customer install options. I mounted /dev/sdb2 and edited the file
/mnt/usb/EFI/BOOT/grub.conf
added my menu item and rebooted to try to use it.
It does not show up in

USB 2.0 device on a USB 3.0 plug
When I plug in my device which is USB 2.0 into a 3.0 slot (cause that is
all I have)
[495042.943074] usb 5-2: new low-speed USB device number 6 using xhci_hcd
[495043.100076] usb 5-2: device descriptor read/64, error -71
I receive the above error.
Is there a flag or setting that tells the USB to in a 2.0 mode ?
Thanks,
Jerry

usb 3
I am trying to plug a USB 2 device in a USB 3 slot. Nothing is being
detected
in "lsusb". Is there something special I need to do? I am running centos
5.5 x86_64.
I thought 3.0 was backward compatible. Nothing special about my device
its an RS232 to USB device.
It works in 2.0 slot.
Thanks,
Jerry

Compaq V2000 laptop no USB recognized
To continue here with problems on this compaq v2000
laptop, I put kernel source on a USB disk and plugged it
into the v2000. NOTHING IS recognized.
I tried to manually mount the disk and nothing either...
I thought USB was well established....
I thought trying to recompile the kernel for realtek support
might get my networking going...
I am stuck???

xfs file system errors
How do I fix an xfs file system error ?
I searched and it says to run xfs_repair /dev/sda1 - did not work.
I got an error on boot and the machine dropped into service mode by
entering the PW. I entered the above command and it said couldnt load
library...
SO I rebooted, dropped into rescue mode. Again I entered the command above
and it said teh same thing.something about could not load library

USB thumb drive for CentOS 7.7 to install
I took the "everything" iso and did the dd command to my 16G thumb drive.
I booted and entered my usual ks=http://xxx on the boot line. All good so
far.
It gets my kickstart file and installation begins.
At some point it says
Installing libreoffice-opensymbol-fonts (492/1948)
Retrying download of 1:libreoffice-opensymbol-fonts-5.3.6.1-21.el7.norarch
then after 10 retries it fails.

booting usb stick
Hi all,
I have been trying to get a usb stick 8G to boot centos.
I am as far a it boots and hangs at "Switching to new root".
I take the same USB stick and put it another PC and it boots fine.
What might I look for as to why the machine hangs at switching to new root?
Of course the machines are different. The one that does not boot is an
ebox 2300sx and
the one that does boot is an

CentOS 8 on USB disk
What's your dd command? Are you sure you are writing to the raw disk
and not inside a partition?

Dual boot C7 with Window 10
I have a laptop with windows 10.
I went into the Windows disk manager and shrunk the volume
to make room for C7. That worked.
I also changed the BIOS from secure boot to "both" (secure/legacy)
I installed C7, went fine. About the time it was done I realized I never
saw anything about "other" boot options (seems I saw that in the past).
Anyway sure enough, got done and C7

USB ISO for CentOS 8
I did the dd of the ISO to a 16G USB device.
the second partition is FAT so I can edit it - I want to make a custom menu
entry.
I edited the grub.cfg - but that did not work - my menu option does not
show.
Then I think I need to change BOOT.cfg and generate the grub.cfg - but I
dont know
in this case how to generate for the USB device.
What command do I use for that ?
Thanks,
Jerry
