question about shared samba directory file permissions..
im trying to set up a shared samba directory for users to use on centos
7, but whenever I create a file from the samba client to the samba server,
the owner of the file ends up being the user the share is mounted up as..
on the server (server1),
[samba]
comment = samba share
path = /samba/
read only = No
valid users = @samba
write list = @samba
force group = +samba

bind update flubbed somehow?
hey folks, we upgraded bind last night to bind-9.8.2-0.62.rc1.el6_9.1.x86_64
and now our server seems to not be able to update. Whenever we add
records and update the soa and reload,
it still shows the old data..
so for example, we have
[root at bind1 /var/named]$grep servername domainname.net.zone
[root at bind1 /var/named]$nslookup -port=5353 servername 10.115.76.87
Server: 10.10.76.87

Centos 7.0 and mismatched swap file
Everyone,
I am putting together a new mail server for our firm using a SuperMicro
with Centos 7.0. When performed the install of the os, I put 16 gigs of
memory in the wrong slots on the mother board which caused the
SuperMicro to recognize 8 gigs instead of 16 gigs. When I installed
Centos 7.0, this error made the swap file 8070 megs instead of what I
would have expected to be a over 16000

How to fit Oggs in a specific amount of space?
I took 5 albums (Classical music) and converted them to Ogg Vorbis
at "Full Bitrate" (-q10) and all 5 directories take up about 775 Megs
which won't fit on a CD. So I ripped them again in WAV first (And
give my friend back his CDs) but now I wanna know what quality
setting should I use to fit them on 1 CD (The highest possible with
total space used just under 700 Megs)

you are correct sir.. something is screwed up!
I remember running into a problem with the base repo enabled and swept
it under the rug by disabling it for the moment and then
forgot all about disabling it.. So when I enable the base repo, and run
yum with debug flag, I see the following:

Samba - XP performance problem
Hello There,
After having googled the whole internet for days I decided to go public
with this issue.
The result of my google queries so far is that there are plenty of
others with the very same problem I have and noone posted a reasonable
answer to this:
Using Samba 3 with XP gets bad performance. I tested this on Tru64 5.1b
and FreeBSD 5.3 with the very same symptoms.

wxruby.so size under Linux?
Today, I noticed that a completely clean build of wxRuby on my desktop
machine is about 5.8 megs, but on my laptop is about 9.8 megs.
Both computers are running Debian GNU/Linux, but my laptop is more of a
mix of releases, whereas my desktop is almost entirely Sarge/Testing.
Both are using gcc 3.3.3. In both cases, I did a full "get", and did a
make from scratch.
Any ideas about

R for large data
I am trying to gain an understanding of R's capabilities in larger data set
analysis. I really like R, but the datasets that I normally work with are
in the 15m-50m range, sometimes much larger. The size owes to observations, not extraneous
variables, so little can be done to "clean" the data of unnecessary
elements. (i.e. database storage or external data manipulation doesn't

install freezes at partition layout
I'm trying to install centos 5 on an old machine, a
Micron with a pentium III and 250 megs of ram. I'm
using the DVD image.
The media check said the DVD was OK.
Everything starts fine (both in graphics and text
modes), untl I get to the custom partition table. The
new system will go on hda, with the boot and root
partition reformatted (see below). I laid it out to

Skipping problems on outgoing calls (using uLaw with an internal * server through Voxee)
Hello all,
I am using a headset and the X-lite softphone (sometimes I use IAXComm,
but I'm having difficulties using OSS emulation with it) to connect via
uLaw to my internal Asterisk server, which is a Pentium II 400 with 128
megs of RAM. After getting this headset, most or all of the echo people
on the other line were complaining about is now gone, according to them.
However, every

I have an hlds server on a CentOS 3.3 box with all the latest
updates. it is a p-4 1.4 ghz with 384 megs of pc-800 and no less
than 250 megs free at all times. Hlds has been crashing on me
since the latest updates. I am thinking it is hlds acting a fool
but i wanted to post here as well just to make sure. Here is the
error.
