nfs stuck, don't know what processes to kill
My NFS server is up and other clients can access x. One particular client can't. I tried to unmount the NFS share: [root at nfsclient ~]# umount -f /disk/x umount2: Device or resource busy umount.nfs: /disk/x: device is busy umount2: Device or resource busy umount.nfs: /disk/x: device is busy If I use df or lsof to try to figure out what process to kill, they hang. CentOS 6: Making KDE Default
I learned from Anne that if I boot to level 5, after I enter the username, can select Gnome or KDE. I note that the default is always Gnome. How can I make the default KDE? How can I get KDE with startx after booting to level 3? Thanks, Mike.

How can I get .xsession-errors back?
I did some research and see a LOT of folks would love to get rid of their .xsession-errors file and I'm in the opposite situation -- where is mine? Do I have to install or enable something special to get this back. All my users are starting X with startx and the default .xinitrc. Is this the problem? -- -------------------------------------------- MzK "We can all sleep easy at night

Help with factanal and missing values
Hi list, I'm performing a series of confirmatory factor analysis on different groupings of items from data collected with questionnaires. There are some missing values. For those sets with no missing values I call factanal(datamatrix, factors=n) where datamatrix is a table of all observations for the items under investigation. This call fails when there are missing values. help(factanal)

Cannot start a secondary Xserver with resolution 6480x3840
Hi, In my workflow I am using several separate xservers. One for work, another for research and so on. Each of them has a separate user account, and they all belong to the same (main) group called janek. I've been using nvidia for years, but about 2 years ago some super annoying bug appeared in nvidia, namely that switching between virtual terminals sporadically causes nvidia_modeset to

GUI black screen on login, startx works???
Hello, I'm using a recent install of centos 7, no GUI customizations that I recall. When I log in using the GUI it accepts my password and the mouse appears on a black screen, like it is preparing the desktop, but the desktop never appears. If I hit control-alt-f4 and log in using the command line, and then execute startx, Everything seems to work perfectly. What sort of troubleshooting

Cannot start a secondary Xserver with resolution 6480x3840
Hi, thank you very much for your reply. I will explain my use case in more detail. First thing is to note that it worked with nvidia (apart from this annoying system freeze which happened roughly every three months). > First off, you're not using the nouveau ddx, you're using the > modesetting ddx. .Xauthority & SMB
I asked this question a while ago, but never got any response. Since then, I've researched the problem some more, so I can give a much more concise description of what's happening. I'm mounting the home directories of the users upon login (using pam_mount) from the Windows server. However, none of the users can run X Windows. It says there's a problem with the .Xauthority file.

Centos 5 File Server X-Windows problem
I have a file server that runs a virtual machine that suddenly blanked its display. I can switch to <ctrl><alt><f1>, but switching back to <ctrl><alt><f7> just gives me a blank screen (no cursor). There are no entries in /var/log/messages or in /var/log/Xorg.0.log that might explain what happened. I was running IceWM, but I can't find any logs for it

follow-up on previous [HELP] messages
Here's some follow-up on some messages I posted some time ago asking for help. Wine works again since 20010731, better than ever, if maybe a little slower. [HELP] Fn keys: This problem is still present. Here's a reminder: I use Wine to run Stew, an Atari ST emulator, a Winston0.5 derivate. While using the emulator, I can't use the Fn keys. For example, if the program's asking to

CO 7.7.1908 Updates not getting to mirrors?
I *know* there has been a lot going on, and congratulations on getting CentOS 8 out! But(!), I don't see any updates to CO 7.7.1908 in the "updates" directory on the mirrors I typically use. All the files date from Sept. 14th. Is something broken? -- *Matt Phelps* *Information Technology Specialist, Systems Administrator* (Computation Facility, Smithsonian Astrophysical

RHEL 7.8 is out
This is not your usual "so when is CO 7.8.xxxx coming out?" posts. I'm just curious if the CentOS team is affected by our current world conditions, or is work-from-home modus operandi for the team?
