CentOS 6.x desktop specs: minimum requirements
Hi, I often have to deal with relatively obsolete hardware in schools, public libraries, small town halls, etc. I still have a handful of CentOS 5.x installations around for these, but I wonder what CentOS 6.x desktop specs are, e. g. the minimum requirements (in terms of CPU and RAM) to reasonably run it. Will a battered first-generation P-IV with 512 MB RAM be sufficient? How much RAM does

CentOS 6.x desktop specs: minimum requirements
Le 24/03/2015 08:34, John R Pierce a ?crit : > I'd be looking at something like TinyLinux or DamnSmallLinux on those. I don't want anything else than CentOS for the job. I used to install my own heavily customized version of Slackware on these machines (http://www.microlinux.fr/slackware/), but this was a bit of a hassle to maintain. CentOS 5.x is running perfectly well on these

Software RAID and GRUB on CentOS 7
Hi, When I perform a software RAID 1 or RAID 5 installation on a LAN server with several hard disks, I wonder if GRUB already gets installed on each individual MBR, or if I have to do that manually. On CentOS 5.x and 6.x, this had to be done like this: # grub grub> device (hd0) /dev/sda grub> device (hd1) /dev/sdb grub> root (hd0,0) grub> setup (hd0) grub> root (hd1,0) grub>

Weird problems with CentOS 7.6 1810 installer
Hi, I just updated my installation media for CentOS. I have a few sandbox PCs in my office, and I'm testing CentOS 7.6 1810 on them. There seem to be a few issues with the CentOS 7.6 1810 DVD. Checked DVD integrity on startup : OK. First attempt : installer froze on root password dialog. Second attempt : installer froze on dependency calculation. Third attempt : installer froze on network

CentOS 7 + NVidia Quadro 2000 graphic card
Le 10/11/2017 ? 14:42, Nux! a ?crit : > Did you play with nvidia-settings? Maybe also wipe out xorg.conf and > start afresh. Thanks for all your suggestions. I spent a few hours fiddling with various driver versions and configurations. In the end, I simply ripped out the %&#@$ Quadro card and replaced it with a GeForce 8300, which works perfectly with the kmod-nvidia-340xx driver.

CentOS 7 + NVidia Quadro 2000 graphic card
Hi, I'm currently trying to install CentOS 7 (desktop) on a Lenovo workstation with an NVidia Quadro 2000 graphical card. Normally I know my way around NVidia cards and how to configure them either using the ELRepo drivers or those downloaded from nvidia.com. I have written a corresponding article on my blog: https://blog.microlinux.fr/nvidia-centos/ But this time it looks like I have no

Squid and HTTPS interception on CentOS 7 ?
Hi, I've been running Squid successfully on CentOS 7 (and before that on 6 and 5), and it's always been running nicely. I've been using it mostly as a transparent proxy filter in school networks. So far, I've only been able to filter HTTP. Do any of you do transparent HTTPS filtering ? Any suggestions, advice, caveats, do's and don'ts ? Cheers from the snowy South of

CentOS 7 + GNOME : all icon themes broken after update from CR
Hi, I just upgraded one of my CentOS 7 + GNOME desktops from the CR repo. After the upgrade, it seems like all of the icon themes are broken. Missing icons everywhere. Any idea what's going on here ? HPLIP vs. CentOS
Hi, Our local school has recently acquired an HP PageWide Pro 477 professional printer. According to HP, the printer requires HPLIP 3.16.3 at least. Unfortunately, CentOS is only shipping HPLIP 3.15.9. So I downloaded and installed the hplip/hplipfull package from the HP site. Installing this thing and getting it to work is not exactly a trivial task, as I documented in my blog:

Recommendations for good CentOS 7 documentation
Hi, I'm looking for recommendations for documentation about the specificities of RHEL/CentOS 7.x. It can be either online or in printed book format, and I'm fluent in german, french and english. I have a good books about 5.x: "RHEL 5 Unleashed" from Sams, "Foundations of CentOS Linux" and "The Definitive Guide to CentOS", both from Apress. Can anyone

Postfix, system notifications and local servers
Hi, I have CentOS 7 running on half a dozen public servers. For some stuff like automatic updates using yum-cron, I have Postfix installed with a relatively basic configuration. This allows me to send important notifications to my mail address info at microlinux.fr. When there's a batch of updates, I get one mail per machine, so I can check quickly if everything went OK without having to

XScreenSaver
Hi, I'm currently moving all our local school's desktop clients from Slackware 14.1 to CentOS 7 + Xfce. Right now I'm fine-tuning the default user profile. I have a problem with XScreenSaver. The application per se works very well. Only there's a hard-coded pop-up window that reminds the user that he's not running the latest version. So, if I'm running version 5.36 as

Password manager for the command line ?
Hi, On my workstation and my laptop I'm using KeePassXC to store login credentials for my websites. The database is stored in my OwnCloud share, so it's synchronized between my two computers. Ideally I'd like to have something similar for my servers, but command-line driven. I know these tools exist but I haven't tested them yet. What I have in mind is a command-line password

Slightly OT : newsletters, mail formatting and netiquette
Hi, This question is not exactly CentOS-related strictly speaking, but here goes. I'm running a few newsletter servers for myself and a handful of clients on public CentOS servers with PHPList. For the last twenty years or so I've followed the basic rule that mails should have no formatting whatsoever, only simple text. And now I wonder if that basic rule of netiquette also applies to

Minicom and Ncurses
Hi, I have to do some maintenance on a CentOS 7 proxy installed on a routerboard without a video card. The only way to access this machine directly is via Minicom and serial port. I'm using NetworkManager TUI (nmtui) to configure network interfaces, but Ncurses rendering in Minicom works in the sense that chickens fly and horses swim. What you get is a forest of question marks with a few

Erratic local hostname resolution with Dnsmasq
Hi, My local server is running CentOS 7. The machine has two NICs and is acting as a gateway. For DHCP and DNS, I'm using Dnsmasq. I have a strange little problem with local hostname resolution. Before going into more details, here's my configuration. [root at nestor:~] # ifconfig enp2s0: flags=4163<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 inet 192.168.0.2 netmask
